At this point it seems likely that Reddit is so incompetent, they just ran a script to check if a subreddit was private and extort the mods if it was, without any check on how long the sub had been private.

[-] pampoon@lemmy.world 20 points 2 years ago

That is 100% what they did.

[-] GunnarRunnar@kbin.social 8 points 2 years ago

This kinda feels like proactive cautionary action to protect their community (which absolutely is good) since they don't outright say admins have been threatening them. Because even an idiot should've figured out to check when the sub was set to private when creating that supposed script.

Hopefully I'm right because jeez otherwise...

[-] FiskFisk33@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

of course they did. That will also be their defence if a story like this hits the press

[-] Lifecoach5000@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

This shit reminds me of offices demanding everyone come back in person even if you had remote approval before the pandemic.

[-] waterbogan@lemmy.world 37 points 2 years ago

Well that is just appalling. In other words, just another Tuesday on reddit

[-] Mowcherie@lemmy.world 27 points 2 years ago

Reaffirming that it is time to leave reddit behind and move on. What kind of evil shitheads do this to breastfeeding mothers and their infants?

[-] Dark_Blade@lemmy.world 16 points 2 years ago

what kind of evil shithead

Spez, obviously.

[-] autokludge@kbin.social 8 points 2 years ago

Are you referring to jailbreak moderator spez?

[-] Dark_Blade@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

r/jailbait, but yes

[-] econpol@kbin.social 5 points 2 years ago

I wish it was jailbreak.

[-] Xeelee@kbin.social 5 points 2 years ago

You mean /r/jailbait? The subreddit /u/spez used to moderate? I bet he'd like that to be forgotten these days.

[-] RickRussell_CA@lemmy.world 20 points 2 years ago

Well, how do private subreddits sell ads & provide training info for AIs?

Oh, they don't.

[-] carteblanche@lemmy.world 17 points 2 years ago

Well now I’m even more annoyed. Removing a safe space for profits. Great job Reddit.

[-] TheInsane42@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

Cash, what humans invented, is important, humans are totally expendable.

[-] sudo_shinespark@lemmy.world 0 points 2 years ago

Yeah, we can always make more humans, but cash is forever

[-] TheInsane42@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

RoA 102: Nature decays, but latinum lasts forever.

[-] Tammo-Korsai@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

A man of culture, I see.

[-] Big_Dick_Dastardly@lemmy.world 18 points 2 years ago

That is just sad. Some subs were the only safe place to chat with others with similar issues.

[-] jerrimu@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

/r/bigdickproblems was never private

[-] FuccDiss@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Never heard of this sub :/

[-] axtualdave@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

At inception I think it was legitimately a place for guys with oversized stuff to talk. Like, there are actual issues guys with giant dongs have to deal with.

But it quickly devolved into lulz my girl says my dick is too biiiggg!!!

[-] FuccDiss@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Yeah I’ve heard stories. Not as fun and one thinks.

[-] Peruvian_Skies@kbin.social 1 points 2 years ago

If it's big enough, you can't even maintain an erection because it requires too much blood. Or wear several types of pants or underwear, or sit comfortably in certain kinds of seats, or sometimes even get the simple feeling that you're done peeing when you are. But "lol I hurt women with my massive 50-inch pecker" gets more upvotes.

[-] Hyperreality@kbin.social 4 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

From what I've heard, a big issue is condoms. Length isn't an issue, girth is. Too large or too small and it rolls up and/or is more likely to tear. Like a too small latex glove, except a dick there's nothing to stop the condom rolling up. Cleaning a toilet and the glove tears? Shit happens. Condom tears? Baby or STD happens. Not funny.

But from what I can tell, a lot of people who post in forums like that are roleplaying having a large dick or gay guys who want to creep on guys with large dicks. People are weird.

[-] curiosityLynx@kbin.social 3 points 2 years ago

I'd also like to add that a too small condom for your girth feels like it's trying to bite off your member. Not a fun experience.

[-] ShadowPouncer@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

The other big problem is that if it's big enough, it may be uncomfortable or down right painful for any partner.

Again, that's usually more of a girth than a length problem, though too much length can also result in pain. (Bumping into the cervix is, for most women, a rather painful experience.)

[-] Sterben@lemmy.world 13 points 2 years ago

They are so unprofessional. They will surely have big loses from this story.

[-] SpezCanLigmaBalls@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago

This is so incredibly sad

[-] meggied90@vlemmy.net 8 points 2 years ago

How utterly depressing.

Does the Fediverse have a similar feature, where communities/magazines can be private and only allow users to view/subscribe to them with mod approval?

I know this is possible with instances, but that seems impractical since the account would be defederated from the entire Fediverse to maintain privacy.

[-] Tigbitties@kbin.social 10 points 2 years ago

How udderly depressing.

Sorry, I had to.

[-] kurgal@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

It will never be a safe space as long as spez is around

[-] PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S@vlemmy.net 1 points 2 years ago

It will never be a safe space ~~as long as spez is around~~

period. Centralized systems like Reddit are inherently beholden to the views of the people who own the central hub. Even if the people at Reddit now were "cool", eventually a piece of shit would end up in a position of power and compromise the site. As we have seen time and time again, both recently and throughout history, we cannot allow our systems to be contingent on the assumed goodwill of the people who run it. Said differently, we need to assume that bastards will take control at some point in the future, and intentionally design our systems to be robust in the face of disturbances caused by bad actors.
