Props to everybody here who helped to contribute to that drop just a teeny tiny little bit.

[-] dogslayeggs@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago

I contributed first by no longer posting there and only rarely lurking on niches that aren't popular here. I am contributing more now that they have blocked old.reddit, because ain't no way I'm even lurking with the new interface.

[-] Zarobi@aussie.zone 3 points 1 week ago

I completely deleted my Reddit account, which is not a decision I took lightly, after more than 10 years of using that website frequently. I didn't use any of the purge apps, my comments can be fossilized under [deleted] incase it helps anyone.

Makes me wonder if that's a good indication of quality? I highly doubt bot accounts and astroturfers would ever delete their account, it's too valuable for them. Deleted users are kind of verified human in a way.

most of reddit is 50% bots anyways, reddit is cannabilizing itself to stay alive.

[-] Trampampoline@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago

I went back about a month ago to delve into a pipetobacco community since there's fuckall on the fediverse for anything even remotely similar, and got bored in half a day, found a UBB board and joined it instead, then I left the reddit account to rot.

[-] Monument@piefed.world 61 points 1 week ago

And with them putting old Reddit behind a login, they’re just losing traffic.
They’re going to start getting really desperate to mine data and drive advertising dollars soon.

[-] otter@lemmy.ca 27 points 1 week ago

Sounds like we should get this place ready for another wave of people

[-] Lemmybrewbeer81@reddthat.com 22 points 1 week ago

The wave has started. I just moved from there to here, after they enforced ID checks and require email or phone number.

Welcome! I know it can be confusing at first.

FYI, Lemmy, MBin/KBin, and Piefed are all different servers. People often say Lemmy when they mean threadiverse as a whole. It's kinda like email though, even if you use gmail, I can email you from yahoo. The interface may vary a little, but the core function is the same.

Fediverse needs that. There's just not enough people to attain the one cool thing about reddit, that was having a couple people create communities around basically any niche hobby you could think of.

Only very generic topics or ultra-popular stuff get some traction, and in many cases it's barely a blip.

they just try to pretend like facebook, Fake engagement by significant amount of bots, which are likely going to be propaganda anyways. Also thier purges last year, probably was the final blow anyways, get rid of actual users, in favor of fake botting, propaganda, and spammers.

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 5 points 1 week ago

Is it regional or for VPN users or something? I still use old reddit when I need to from search results, and I don't get asked to log in.

[-] EdgeOfDistraction@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

I get asked to login to old.reddit if I set my VPN to USA, but not for the European countries I've tested.

[-] jaygray91@piefed.zip 4 points 1 week ago

It seems to be rolling out region by region I reckon. I'm in the south east Asia and I don't get asked to log in yet.

[-] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 42 points 1 week ago

I don't see why Google would renew. The current content is AI slop.

[-] NikkiDimes@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago

Have you seen Google's output lately? Their bar is pretty low, I'd say.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 3 points 1 week ago

The only thing I use Google's AI for is to get text out of images. Which I'll give it credit for it does very well even with extremely blurry content

[-] one_old_coder@piefed.social 6 points 1 week ago

Or... why would they renew since they downloaded all the old "useful" content? (and the new content is useless)

It's like downloading a torrent, you may seed a bit, but you would never download it over and over again.

They're still a decent enough porn aggregator. Maybe they can get an AI deal out of that.

[-] PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

That’s about all I use it for these days… I can’t lie. It’s still not as good as Tumblr was at that task but I digress.

[-] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

Oh, nostalgia

[-] Wispy2891@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

grok already illegally scraped all the free galleries from the early 00s with hundreds of shots of the same model in the various positions, making a deal with a porn aggregator just to get links to images already previously scraped and a few new gw pics don't make sense

I cannot tell you how happy I am I found lemmy

[-] Nowtayneicangetinto@thelemmy.club 14 points 1 week ago

Reddit is pure filth. I was on there for 15 years and to see it die such a horrible, slow death is bittersweet. It's like Twitter after it became X.

[-] Polisheocket@lemmy.zip 19 points 1 week ago

Good, I got banned for a stupid reason, they need some humble pie

[-] WizardofFrobozz@lemmy.ca 20 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I got banned for showing, quote, "extreme indifference" when Kissinger took a dirt nap 😅

[-] JailElonMusk@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 week ago

That's hilarious.

I got banned for posting in r/Tesla. Snowflakes.

[-] RiverRabbits 3 points 1 week ago

good username, but also props to you for the restraint in punishment.

Reddit sucks, form me it was being shadowbanned for no reason (really I didn't troll anyone). I tried asking why (although maybe suspicions that I was trying proton VPN at the time), i followed their procedures, never found out why (no mods that answered to me knew why) or managed to take it off until I said to myself "why bother"? I was there trying to help mostly. So yes, fuck reddit.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 6 points 1 week ago

vpn seems to be auto-shadowban, because reddit hates user that uses vpns.

[-] liking625@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Nothing more hateful than shadowbanning, if you block or ban me in any way , be upfront about it and let me know.

I certainly loathed the experience, i will avoid any platform that can use such method

[-] thakur0@lemmy.zip 13 points 1 week ago

They just banned me for no reason

"FUCK" see? Still not banned on lemmy

[-] bstix@feddit.dk 17 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

You won't get banned, but Patrick will add you to his list if you scare the normies.

[-] Sharkticon@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 week ago

Thr really scary thing is what sick twisted fucks these so-called normies must be.

[-] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 week ago

I still don't get "Reddit stock". What value does a trumped up BBS offer?

[-] OctopusNemeses@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago

Have you seen how it is lately? It's a glorified tabloid. It's largely used for pop culture gossip. People know it's slop, and they don't care. They use it anyways.

Reddit is far from the days of being a modernized tech BBS. At least 10 years removed from it. In it's current incarnation it's an interactive daily newspaper with Bat Boy stories on the front cover. That's what they're selling. And it does sell.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 1 week ago

its also useful as facebook2.0, for disseminating various propaganda.

[-] fodor@lemmy.zip 15 points 1 week ago

They pretended that the content was written by humans. And Google needed data upon which to train its AI. I don't think there's any value in that, but if you are an AI investor, you might want to ride your bubble.

The rest of us know that Reddit is full of bots and you shouldn't be training anything on it. But if you're looking at data from three or more years ago, then maybe that's more human written. Of course Reddit and Google deny that bots dominate, but we know they're lying and they're trying to make money off of the bubble anyway, so don't trust them.

[-] EliteCloneMike@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 week ago

They’re surely juicing the numbers that they show investors. It’s all about showing that they are still growing in some way or another. Nothing else matters to them. Much to the detriment of the users. I moved away from Google many many years ago. Have been moving away from Reddit over the past several months as well.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 1 week ago

same method as FB, they pretend there is still engagement, by drumming up interactions.

AI moderation is overly sensitive, its likely by design because they went public.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 5 points 1 week ago

Did they actually get anything useful from Reddit given that 90% of the content posted there is just BS. Especially now since it will be mostly just recycling its own slop.
