Much like how serial killers find it easy to get away with murdering sex workers, cyclists are basically considered 'less dead' when the murder weapon is a car.

I really wonder what sort of PR strategy it is to call a vehicular manslaughter case isolated. Are they trying to emphasise that he didn't drive into a crowd or what? Or is the idea to make sure nobody gets any ideas about passing new laws for the protection of bicycle riders, since this was "isolated" rather that structural?
I used to live in a rural mountainous area and would mountain bike avidly. There were tons of amazing and challenging trails. Only danger was a rattlesnake or I guess going off the side of the mountain but that would just mean rolling down the hill a bit in most places. That is it usually didn't mean falling to your death.
There were a lot of road cyclist who would bike on the tiny two lain mountain roads with blind turns where people would be speeding through. I always thought they were crazy risking their life like that. It just seemed better to drive to the trailhead and have a day in nature typically without ever running into another person.
The thing is riding bikes is fun and for some their riding is more fun on the road. Windy mountain roads are the best roads for fun riding.
I want to be able to break hard without sliding, I want to corner fast and with confidence, and I want to not deal with a bumpy road surface. The road is also usually just faster if you are riding for transportation or want to do a lot of milage.
Also not everyone has a car.....................
At least in that area it would be nearly impossible to live without a vehicle. I think every road cyclist I saw was suited and not carrying anything so I'm pretty sure it wasn't for transport unless that was their outfit for work or they had a shower and work clothes at work.
You can definitely go faster and brake harder but I loved ripping up trails, sliding and so on. It's a bit like how guys ride on brakeless fixies. Those mountain roads just seemed so lethal for a road cyclist vs city roads with proper bike lanes. Like I used to do a lot of legitimate commuting when I moved down the mountain into the city. Not only were there bike lanes but an entire network of bike trails separate from the road, although one had to be more mindful of pedestrians and dog walkers around turns.
All i'm saying is, one was most definitely putting their life in the hands of others on those tight winding mountain roads and I simply don't trust drivers to assume a cyclist is around that blind turn and to steer into the oncoming lane to give them space or slow down from 45 to 15 on the uphill just in case on every single turn every day of their commute.
