May they forever live in existential fear and require personal security for the rest of their pathetic lives

The datacenter growth model has to stop now

The financial markets are starting to punish companies for throwing everything into AI

Good. These execs fucked with our lives and killed a lot of people. Let's see how they like living in fear of retaliation.

[-] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 114 points 1 month ago

They were using sci-fi as their inspiration and the hype for selling their stuff and never bothered to also check the downsides portrayed in the same literature. It's a classic gonk move to be expected from corpo scum.

Sci-Fi Author: In my book I invented the Torment Nexus as a cautionary tale

Tech Company: At long last, we have created the Torment Nexus from classic sci-fi novel Don't Create The Torment Nexus

CEO two years later: Thank you for having me on this podcast. After the stock price plunged, the board gave me choice of being sued for criminal negligence or a transfer. So I was uploaded to the Torment Nexus for on site management. Who knew this place was so terrible?

[-] Modern_medicine_isnt@lemmy.world 95 points 1 month ago

No, they aren't terrified. These people think they are demigods. I've seen it in plent of senior vice presidents even. It's almost a job requirement at this point. Body guards make them feel even more important, and the company pays for it. Plus... that other tech bro has it, so I should too. That's just the type of people we are dealing with.

TIL that someone tried to firebomb Sam Altman. Hero! ✊

BTW, such reactions are partly self-inflicted:

As the fight over AI data centers heats up, some polls have shown that AI is less popular with Americans than Immigration and Customs Enforcement. People fear that AI will result in mass layoffs, a further consolidation of wealth and power, or even a catastrophic apocalypse — outcomes that many leaders in the AI industry have issued warnings about.

In an effort to make AI more appealing, one should add.

...someone tried to firebomb Sam Altman.

That guy wasn't trying to firebomb anything. He was following ChatGPT's receipe for risotto. He can't be blamed for simply following the instructions that he was given.

Tech execs have had armed bodyguards for a long time. There was a scandal in Santa Clara county where the sheriff accepted bribes to issue concealed-carry certs for bodyguards.

[-] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago

I think there's another place in Arizona or something, with shocking amounts of sherriffs. Off duty leo don't haveany firearms restrictions at all.

This has actually been happening since Luigi. Especially tech CEOs. The companies actually started paying for them.

I first ran into it in a class a couple years ago, the dude running was talking about how our group was the first group of normies he'd seen. It was all silicon Valley C staff before, every one had a dude standing directly behind them who wouldn't talk. We're only hearing about it now, but they've been creating a new personal guard industry since the united Healthcare ceo got it.

What is the answer when the wealthy murder countless people but hide it by doing it indirectly?

How are people supposed to make them stop?

Because the murder that the wealthy are doing needs to stop.

Everyone who is not them needs it to stop.

How "brilliant" do you have to be to think this is a better alternative than to stop doing things that make you think people are going to Luigi you?

[-] FlyingCircus@lemmy.world 26 points 1 month ago

Stopping doing those things would mean stopping doing capitalism, and these people would rather we all die than that.

Hey Execs, do you think maybe if you need to hide behind armed security, that you might just be going down the wrong path by doing evil shit? Also armed guards won't help you if you make the public mad enough and destroy enough lives to where it doesn't matter if they live or not to them. Just a thought

Good. Parasites should be afraid.

(Not a call for violence. Just saying people who destroy lives should live in fear.)
