Treating inmates like they are people, The GOP is going to throw a tantrum over that for sure.

you know, in places (like scandinavia) where they treat their prisoners like they're human and not pond scum have MUCH lower recidivism rates than places like america where they treat their prisoners like scum. In scandinavia, prison is about rehabilitation. in america, prison is about making a prisoner's life as horrendous as possible. Rehabilitation vs pure punishment.

No, you're mistaken. In America, prison is about creating a permanent underclass (mostly) of ethnic minorities to use as slave labor. Scandinavia treats their prisoners like humans because, being fairly racially homogeneous, there's no visibly-obvious way to "other" them.

I mean there's minoritiles in scandinavia and they are still likely to end up in prison. They are just treated better.

The US was founded by the english who used prisoners as soldiers and ran a giant slave trade. Its less about homogeny and more about english colonial culture which is where the tiered society in the US originates:

  • at the top you have the rich dandy fuckwits who are both dumb and violent
  • below that you have the merchants and traders who are explicitly extractive
  • below that you have prisoners who are pointing a gun at the natives and kidnapped workers
  • the natives and and kidnapped workers at the bottom

The US added a level of racism that even upset the brits I should add but in 250 years it seems we still essentially have the british colonial system.

We've replaced the prisoner military with a form of wage serfdom and replaced kidnapped workers with prison workers.

That's because we allow private companies to run prisons in America, and more inmates means more federal $, so there is a financial interest to keep the cells full, through longer terms reincarceration. Also our constitution allows for slave labor as punishment for crime. Everything about this country is fucked up.

Yeah, we do know. It sucks.

Sad how he does something decent that very few others would have, and yet he's still attacked for it. Some people need to get a grip on how reality actually works, and realize change - especially from within - takes a lot more time and effort than any of us would like due to reality's limitations.

You seen conservatives these days? They’re all talking about empathy being a sin and most of them think that being a man means being violent. They’re fucking insane, of course people will be mad.
