"We've already got four lights in here, we don't need another one."

IIRC he acquired the nickname during the filming of First Contact because of his efficiency behind the camera. Granted he'd likely built up most of that report when he directed a few episodes of TNG
Sounds about right.
Just playing off on that whole cast being a bunch of goofballs on set.

"Hey everyone, if we get this scene by the second take we can all knock off early and hit the pubs!"
I had never heard of the nickname, but I could easily believe it!
Jonathan Frakes is a recurring guest director across so many science fiction franchises; and the episodes are usually a treat.
I suspect he's built a great deal of trust across the industry, just to get invited to be a guest director for an episode or two, so often.
I know a few working actors. This is what I've been told.
Generally, actors turned directors are the fastest to work with. Morgan Freeman is famous for never asking for more than three takes of any scene. Actor/directors can give the cast the exact intonation and actions they want.
At the other end, cinematographers are all about the "picture" and will do endless takes. "Maybe we try it with Data a little out of focus at the start?"
Makes perfect sense.
Having a great cinematographer on board like Marvin Rush, however, is how we get great shots like this...

... from "The Mind's Eye" where the brainwashed sleeper agent Geordi is on his way to assassinate the governor.
Ya been waitin' fo' years fo' a chance ta post that. Ain't cha?

Give or take a year from my last rewatch.
I did not know he directed that episode.
He’s already got his First Contact look.
Looking through the behind the scenes shots, you see Frakes go from too high-waisted older gentleman...

...to location set as a Ralph Lauren poster boy...

How much you wanna bet they shot Montana first?
Paid vacation to a beautiful vista, hopefully not at the height of summer? No contest.
Since you can see their breath at night, it was probably late in the year.
Isn't it his Schisms look?

Does he need convertibles with the top down so he can Riker Maneuver into the driver's seat
