They cried when Obama let Iran have 1.7B.

They just gave Iran 300B.

Fucking clown show.🤡

[-] Arancello@aussie.zone 67 points 1 week ago

if i was a usa taxpayer i’d be a little annoyed at the moment

[-] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 32 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

r/conservative is, dare I say, tepid on this deal. Though surprisingly most are: celebrating not fighting at Israel's whim, avoiding discussing the actual amount, calling out the blatant stock manipulation and pretty hesitant to celebrate since they anticipate the deal falling apart inside 36 hours (though predictably they presume Iran will be at fault for that). It's pretty wild, I wonder if the mods are in the hospital or something.

[-] dogslayeggs@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

The takes in there are wildly all over the place. Lots of in-fighting too.

My favorite is this exchange: *nu1stunnaConstitutionalist [score hidden] 3 hours ago **

Blah blah blah. All that matters is that the IRGC, the world leading state sponsor of terror — the organization that mass murders its own citizens in cold blood will have access to money. You know what happens when they have access to money? Well, they steal a ton of it for themselves and the rest of it goes towards funding terrorism. The Iranian people won’t see a dime of it. The last time they had access to cash, October 7th happened. Trump has the opportunity to do something incredible for all of mankind but is making the same mistake that every other world leader has made for 47 years. This is just fucking shameful. No deal with terrorists.

**According-Activity87Conservative Devil Dog [score hidden] 2 hours ago **

Most of the leadership of the IRGC responsible for all of that is dead, to include the ayatollah. We were having a hard time finding anyone left who would claim a position of leadership to negotiate with. No one has done more to hold them accountable in the last 47 years. "Trials" were carried about by bombing. They are already telling the talking heads in the control to shut up and get in line with peace. That's a first, this definitely hasn't been the same old same old.

Ok, this take by nu1stunna is rather reasonable... until he replied with this:

**nu1stunnaConstitutionalist [score hidden] 2 hours ago **

This is the exact mistake that I’m talking about. It doesn’t matter if you negotiate with Ali Khamenei (may he be burning in eternal hell) or 100 positions down from him. The terroristic nature is in their DNA. You cannot make a deal with these people. They are rotten to their core. The only reason you see some telling others to STFU is because they are reeling and need access to money. It’s a delay tactic. That’s it. Trump has allies in 90 million Iranians on the ground to help finish the job. He told them to stay at home and that he would tell them when the time comes to come out reclaim the country. Instead, he paused the war and started negotiating with these terrorists again.

There's the white-power racism I was looking for from them.

[-] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I'm so confused by that last one.

They seem to think that this is going to screw over the Iranian civilians, who are all terrorists, who Trump said he'd support, and who he is now betraying by negotiating with the Iranian government, who are also terrorists. So their position is we shouldn't have a deal with terrorists, because we should have a deal with terrorists.

That's... that's gotta be an LLM. There's no actual reasoning there.

[-] dogslayeggs@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

They are so close to getting it, and then it goes off the rails.

Also, another post there said this absolute gem:

"So, as usual from Republicans, very little accomplished at our expense.

We need a real party that will fully oppose Democrats."

Like.... what?!?!?!?! It's almost impressive the depth of insanity they could pack into 21 words.

[-] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

For those of us who aren't US taxpayers, we can avoid giving our money to those who are US taxpayers.

[-] sudo@programming.dev 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

The US is letting Iran access its own money that the US had frozen with sanctions. Same as with the JCPOA. The US tax payers are not footing this bill.

Update only $25B is from frozen assets, the $300B is from the GCC. The people we dragged into this war are footing the bill. LOL fuck the UAE.

[-] Witchfire@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

I have to pay the US taxes despite living outside the US, and in exchange they won't let me renew my passport because I'm trans, so remind me why I'm paying them?

[-] BrianTheeBiscuiteer@lemmy.world 25 points 1 week ago

That $1.7B was a release of money that already belonged to Iran. The $300B is a straight up payout from US and other taxpayers. And we're also giving them back $25B we withheld as part of the war effort.

I'm guessing the Russian oil sanctions we lifted because of the closure of the strait are just going to fade away as if it was never that big of a deal to begin with.

[-] jaxxed@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I believe it is a shared fund between middle wastern countries and the U.S.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 5 points 1 week ago

oh and that 300bn is apparently going to be slush fund by the ME countries, and trump will take a cut in that.

Who the fuck is the 'Gulf coast coalition' that is stumping up the 300 bil?

Better not include the UK public purse. Over my dead body is my taxes subsidising the poor decisions of the US electorate.

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

They probably mean the GCC countries: UAE, Saudi, Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_Cooperation_Council

[-] zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 week ago

And here I was hoping the "Gulf Coast" they were referring to was Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas.

[-] jobbies@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Oh yeah let them pay for USs mistakes. Cos that's better.

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I'm not sure if they even agreed to it, it would be typical for Trump to try to rub losses he has caused off on someone else.
One thing is sure, USA has lost a lot of credibility among all the GCC countries, it shall be interesting to see how much it hurts the petro dollar, because if that goes, so will an enormous amount of petro dollar investments back into USA.

We live in interesting times.

[-] jobbies@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

it shall be interesting to see how much it hurts the petro dollar, because if that goes, so will an enormous amount of petro dollar investments back into USA.

That investment was important in the past but no more than any other country. The US isn't really a market for their oil or gas, and while Russia is embargoed theres plenty of other countries willing to invest to secure access. Look at how well China has been doing of late with all that cheap Russian and Iranian oil.

Also, where would that investment actually go? Fracking? Greenland? Arctic? Maybe they'll pivot to solar and Tromps dreaded wind turbines (or 'windmills' as he calls them, the fucking moron).

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

The US isn’t really a market for their oil or gas,

That is not at all what the petro dollar is about. It's about USA ensuring the safety of the GCC countries, and in return the GCC countries are selling oil for USD, this increases international demand for USD to buy oil. GCC countries are then investing most of those dollars back into American companies. If that cycle is broken, demand for USD will decrease dramatically, and a lot of investments would disappear from USA too. Whoever buys the oil is irrelevant, as long as it is paid in USD, the petro dollar is maintained.

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 1 points 1 week ago

They're definitely America's mistakes, but they're also their mistakes, the mistake being allowing US bases on their territory to be used in this war. Doubly so for Saudi Arabia and the Emirates, who actually encouraged Trump to do this.

[-] jobbies@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

also their mistakes, the mistake being allowing US bases on their territory to be used

Oh, so diplomacy and hosting an ally's forces in the name of friendship is a mistake? Not to mention most of those bases were there long before Tromp was president. And, the UK and Germany and plenty of other nations also play host to US bases. Are we mistaken too?

Doubly so for Saudi Arabia and the Emirates, who actually encouraged Trump to do this.

Did they fuck. Think you need to brush up on actual facts on who encouraged what. Not that mein fuhrer needed encouragement.

And in any case, if that clown had never been elected we'd never be discussing this. And Obamas deal - which did a lot of good I might add - would still be in place.

Probably not a direct transfer. But there's not so many details on who or when it will be paid.

[-] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

My guess is that it will come in the form of 'aid' from an allied country. Donald's spent so much time over the last 11 years meming about the pallets of cash that there's just no way he is going to publicly own it.

[-] gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Well hey, since this is surely taxpayer money, according to our idiot fucking regime, we’re all now funding “terrorist activities” 🥴

Ballparking the numbers, ~165M taxpayers gives us a mean handout from literally everyone to the tune of a bit under 2k/person.

This is the dumbest fucking timeline, I swear to Cthulhu

So this Gulf Coast Coalition is just Oil companies?

Meaning that I would suspect that the intent on the US side is that Iran gives its oil fields to them in return for that theoretical 300 billion.

But this would be what, the third, maybe the fourth time the US and Iran have danced that dance?

[-] sudo@programming.dev 3 points 1 week ago

The GCC all the Arab nations on the other side of the Persian gulf that got their shit rocked for hosting US bases. They are not in a position to make any demands.

[-] xenomor@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I really really hope that Iran will use a little of this money to develop nukes. Then, maybe, we can achieve a little more stability in the region.
