Please make them stop. Why are they still legal? My neighbor has been using a mower, weed eater, and leaf blower for 5.5 hours. Nobody else ever notices the noise but my auditory sensitivities make me want to claw my skin off.

The HoA at the housing area I live at has landscapers come through every Tuesday, and their gas mowers, weed whackers, and leaf blowers are going nonstop from 9am to 6pm. I cannot fucking stand how much noise it makes. Even with headphones and in my room, it overpowers everything. The only way I can get a reprieve is to just take my laptop and go to the nearest library all day

[-] MagnificentSteiner@lemmy.zip 9 points 2 months ago

While you're listening to music or whatever on your headphones, play a youtube video of brown noise in the background too. That should help drown it out.

[-] pHr34kY@lemmy.world 19 points 2 months ago

Constant tones don't bother me as much as varying ones. Tradespeople with saws, hammers and nailguns are ao much worse.

[-] r0ertel@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Agreed on constant tones. I have headphones that can block out the lawn equipment pretty good. The one neighbor has a service that comes and they're gone in 15 minutes. 3 guys with leaf blowers at the end for 90 seconds and the headphones make them sound like they're a few blocks away. The other neighbor is trigger happy and he likes to rev it up and down and my headphones can't keep up. I shut the windows and gnash my teeth for the 15 minutes it takes him to blow his yard.

[-] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 months ago

My neighbor is over here blowing shit for an hour. Drives me nuts. Dude is OCD or something about his lawn. It looks nice, but damn. Drives me nuts.

Oh I hate leafblowers so fucking much. The noise is penetrating everything, and, especially with the loudest gas ones, the worker adjusts the throttle constantly. So the brain doesn’t get a second of at least monotonous noise to concentrate on something else, it instantly revs up and commands attention.
And the whole concept is so stupid. Stir up all the polluted dirt so it can get into people’s lungs, houses, and all kinds of surfaces. Blow leaves from the curb on the road, so cars can keep stirring them up, and push them back to the curb eventually. Blow the shit on the guy next door’s driveway, because poor overworked and underpaid landscaper, standing out there in the heat and sun, deafened by the fucking thing and getting lung cancer from the fumes and dust, cannot care less they just need to be done with that one driveway before getting a heatstroke.
Either get a broom or rake for small stuff around a residential property, or the sweeps-and-vacuum machine to actually clean up stuff in larger areas, like parking garages, roads, etc… ban fucking leafblowers, and ban all 2 stroke gas power tools in public places. Amen.

[-] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Ban them. And if we can find the person who invented them, kick them in the balls, or vag...

[-] charade_you_are@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 months ago

Harold Weedwacker and Lyle Leafblower are the culprits! I'm no fan of doxxing but I think in this case it's justified

Any sounds coming from outside whatever enclosure I'm in is highly triggering. Any/all lawn care devices, loud exhaust/music, arguing/fighting, etc. I hate it

[-] irotsoma@piefed.blahaj.zone 8 points 2 months ago

Yeah, so loud and annoying. They kick up so much dust and just move stuff from one place to another and often they don't actually pick the stuff up after, not to mention the fumes. Hate them all around.

Battery powered devices have gotten way better and while they may not be able to handle larger properties in one charge yet, the catteries are getting cheaper. I have a mower, and an edger and weed eater that all share a battery. I have a really small lot, but as long as I don't leave the grass to get really long and keep the blades on the mower sharp (both of which mean more torque and thus more power is needed) I never drain the battery totally. And a good broom is way more efficient at cleaning the sidewalks than a blower. And I either bag or mulch the grass, so I never need to rake, so only a little gets on the sidewalks compared to letting the grass go everywhere. And honestly with how heavy those blowers and fuel are, it's probably not that much more effort to use a broom either.

Overall it's significantly less noise (not totally quiet of course), no exhaust fumes for me or my neighbors, and less kicking up dust and pollen that I'm sensitive to and I'm sure others are as well.

My trigger is a tarp blowing in the wind loudly :| It makes me anxious in a way nothing else does.
Those gas blowers are loud as frig though.

I bring earplugs to any loud-ish things though; mechanic's shop, demolition derby, circus, ...

[-] sudo@lemmy.today 7 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

frig

Fuck. The word you are looking for is fuck.

They are loud as fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

You're actually allowed to say fuck on the Internet. Fuck. See. Fuck.

[-] ray@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 months ago

Believe it or not, you're also allowed to say frig on the internet

[-] eightys3v3n@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 months ago

Aw you're right, I can say fuck off you frigger.

[-] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 months ago

I take ear plugs everywhere. Have loops on my keychain. Absolute lifesaver.

[-] NihilsineNefas@slrpnk.net 5 points 2 months ago

Highly recommend concert earplugs for when it gets real bad, they drop about 20dB off the sound and cut out those high pitches that scrape at your brain

[-] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 months ago

I have loops on my key chain. It switches between three settings but I can never tell the difference. I want to buy more for sure, but they are pricey.

I have some to play specifically with my band that kills 20db. The stick out of the ears though, so I just use the loops.

[-] NihilsineNefas@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 months ago

Are they an Active Noise Cancelling type?

I've been using the old school silicone guys with a little plastic widget that lets in a small amount of sound, unfortunately can't use the powered type because of explosive atmosphere safety laws (smh why won't these companies let me die /j )

[-] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago

Mine are passive. What are the safety laws?

[-] NihilsineNefas@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 month ago

One of the rules to stop people from setting off explosions is that nobody's allowed electronics or anything with exposed metal / has materials that pose a static charge risk in an area that could have gas or flammable dust.

[-] potter2010@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 months ago

I can understand leaf blowers. For me it's hair dryers. Just cannot stand the sound!

[-] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 2 months ago

I'm gonna tell you about the most successful prank I've experienced.

My work had nice stereo speakers setup on space near the ceiling (weird layout). There was a back door to a tiny parking lot that we probably paid more to have (windows and stuff not available to all offices in a shared space).

Fucking leaf blowers show up. They're out there, we can see them. They just won't stop! About an hour in, my buddy complains that they're giving him a headache. Someone agrees they should go away. Another of my friends (to this day, that shithead) starts laughing so hard. "I can't believe nobody noticed!"

He had set the stereo (hooked to a computer) to a youtube video of leaf blowers. The guys with the leaf blowers had been gone for a long time. None of us figured it out. He's a good friend and I still hate him for that. I think I'll slap his baby to get back at him, I'm so mad (still!) (not really, I love him).

I still laugh with anger at how he duped us so hard.

[-] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 months ago

He at least owes lunch and a beer. I swear, I wish we had a whole community just for auditory sensitivities. I live with a 4 month old and want to stab myself in the ears half the time. Loud restaurants always get me. We have to leave any place that has a live band because it stresses me out so bad trying to hear others.

It's the worst part of ADHD by far for me. I can live with all the unfinished tasks and forgetting everything if people would just stop making so much noise. Please please please no more noise...

[-] adarza@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 months ago

we get to hear it all year long. the leaf blowers turn into light-weight snowblowers in the winter.

[-] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 months ago

You just made the best case to not move where it snows.

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 months ago

They need to be banned for several reasons. The small particulates they blow up are dangerous to breathe, the noise will ruin hearing.

I took care of lawns when I was a kid, rakes and brooms worked fine, but now morbidly obese are doing lawn care.

What I've learned is that headphones are my friend. I have them for the PC, the TV, for outside and even for sleeping. I'd go nuts without them.

[-] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 months ago

How do you sleep with those?

[-] MagnificentSteiner@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 months ago

They're basically a headband with flat headphones inside so quite comfy even for side sleeping (as I do). Just search on Amazon or wherever for sleep headphones. I have an older version of these.

[-] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 months ago

I tried some a long time ago that were supposed to be noise canceling. Never could get them to work. Might need to try a few from the post here, including something like you posted with just the band. (Can't see because blocking Amazon).

[-] MagnificentSteiner@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Ahh, mine are definitely not noise cancelling. I'm not putting up with much noise at night, it's just the slightest sound from neighbours (which most people wouldn't even hear) will stop me sleeping. Fortunately it's usually silent here at night and I only need them sometimes!

[-] DudeImMacGyver@kbin.earth 2 points 2 months ago

Not under normal use, but after 6 hours? Yeah, fuck that.

[-] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 2 points 2 months ago

I don’t think much of it, but my wife hates ‘em. They’re annoying, but they end eventually.

[-] Susan60@aus.social 2 points 2 months ago

@ScoffingLizard

Seeing a PAIS worker blow the leaves in front of one property in front of the neighbouring property is what sets me off. Should be fined for littering.

[-] cy@fedicy.us.to 2 points 2 months ago

Mower, fine. Weed eater, fine but you better not be using a plastic spool. Leaf blower........ what good are they? It's easy to rake up leaves. Getting them in bags is what's hard. The vibration from the leaf blower would do more damage to your joints than raking. Leaf blowers don't do anything else! There is no purpose do them! WHY ARE THEY A THING AAAAA

[-] Susan60@aus.social 2 points 2 months ago
[-] cy@fedicy.us.to 0 points 2 months ago

People are trying to around here... though they're like "ban leaf blowers cough cough I mean ban gas powered leaf blowers electric ones are fine I would never question our leaf blower overlords."

[-] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 months ago

I hate the resonance from an electric one, but it's not as bad as a gas one.

[-] 5714@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 months ago

Those can be argued away replaced in the long-term, but garbage trucks are awful: intermittent hydraulic whining combined with fast and wonky plastic sounds combined with truck stop and go sounds...

[-] Beth@piefed.social 1 points 2 months ago

Used to. Then I had to use one for work. Now think about the nice neat orderly landscaping. How tidy everything looks. Like power washing.

[-] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 months ago

Please just grab electrical ones. Clients could pay $5 more for electric service. Keep several batteries charged. It would sell to some people.

[-] Beth@piefed.social 2 points 2 months ago

Oh it’s not something I use anymore. At the time it was the bosses equipment.
