Millions of international travelers are increasingly choosing to avoid the United States.

The United States had roughly 4 million fewer international visitors in 2025 than the year before, marking a 5.5 percent decline in overseas tourism, according to CNN. Foreign visitor spending also fell by more than $8 billion.

Aside from the collapse in travel during the COVID-19 pandemic, it represents the sharpest annual drop in international tourism in roughly 20 years.

Why would I want to visit a third world country rife with civil unrest and government sponsored domestic terrorism?

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 5 points 10 hours ago

Ah, the trumpslump.

So. much. winning.

[-] SnarkoPolo@lemmy.world 13 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

I would strongly advise you, do NOT travel here. If you must, stick to major cities. If you aren't white and fluent in the American dialect of English, you may be in danger of an ICE raid even then.

Above all, stay out of the interior. It's a different world, and you might find yourself at the mercy of some local warlord (spelled "constitutional sheriff").

[-] SleepyPie@lemmy.world 9 points 13 hours ago

Only 5.5% 🤷 So many people are just mindless apes that’s so sad.

[-] Iusedtobeanalien@lemmy.world 4 points 11 hours ago

The 10% full world cup stadiums will be hilarious

Please please have both Iran and USA win their groups so they can play and the US loose. I want to see the Trumpty Melty.

[-] Suavevillain@lemmy.world 6 points 14 hours ago

"Trump is going to get people to respect America again." Average FL Trump cultist.

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmings.world 3 points 14 hours ago

Why would you come here, just to get interrogated at the border, with the very real possibility that you would be denied entry, wasting your entire vacation? And that's your best case scenario.

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 34 points 1 day ago

I'm not sure it's exactly a boycott so much as "yeah I don't want to be sent to a concentration camp"

not a boycott.

if McDonald's has a new CEO, and his first move is to replace the meat with literal human shit, he can't call it a boycott...

Truth is it ia dangerous for anyone to visit the US, that isn't a boycott, it's self preservation

[-] Cris_Citrus@piefed.zip 28 points 1 day ago

Yeah, I agree that boycott is really not the right way to describe what's happening here

Theyre not doing it in coordinated protest, they just dont wanna fuckin come here 😅. Can't imagine why, its like a historical reenactment, you can step back in time to when everything was worse! What a cool vacation /s

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 9 hours ago

If I see a creek full of shit I'm not swimming in it, that's not a boycott.

[-] FoxtrotDeltaTango@sh.itjust.works 2 points 14 hours ago

It’s both honestly, 2 things can be true

[-] lemmy_outta_here@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

I am boycotting. I stopped going to the states in 2016, the first time they elected shit-for-brains. It’s not about safety.

[-] Cris_Citrus@piefed.zip 6 points 1 day ago

Thats very fair. I don't know if its accurate to call the response at scale a boycott. I'm sure lots of people are boycotting though

they called it a boycott to shift the blame.

[-] switcheroo@lemmy.world 91 points 1 day ago

As they should. Don't be stupid, do not come to a fascist country. You have zero protections here and everything is way too fucking expensive. Is that worth jail time? Because there's a chance the racist POS goonsquad will kidnap you.

[-] TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com 78 points 1 day ago

Why would I risk getting arrested and held for months for no reason, maybe even deported to a concentration camp in El Salvador, while going on holiday? I could think of other less awful destinations.

[-] Bluegrass_Addict@lemmy.ca 34 points 1 day ago

pretty sure everyone is safer visiting el Salvador on their own terms then being sent by us

[-] patruelis@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Yep, considering it is one of the safest countries for tourists...

[-] TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

Unless I get arrested for gang related activities, as I am Dutch and might get suspected of drug deals or whatever. Often I'm picked out for extensive checks when entering a country as soon as they see my Dutch license plate or passport. We are the biggest importer of cocain in europe and we are the biggest producer of MDMA and XTC in the world. Many times I've been treated as a criminal until they found out I was not. El Salvador isn't known for the "finding out" part, they just throw you in prison without trial indefinitely. Estimates are that 1 in 5 currently incarcerated there are innocent.

[-] Iusedtobeanalien@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Cutout the middle man and just head to el salvador

[-] NoMadLadNZ@lemmy.nz 10 points 23 hours ago

almost like they regard it as a shithole country as Rump liked to say about others

[-] Typhoon@lemmy.ca 54 points 1 day ago

Yeah who wants to end up in a concentration camp?

And how the fuck is it only a 5.5% decline? Why are 94.5% of travelers still risking their lives?

[-] MyBrainHurts@piefed.ca 6 points 23 hours ago

I think the earlier person had it right (discretionary vs non discretionary travel) but it's also worth noting that for most other countries, tourism is booming this year. So if everyone else rose say even 10% US tourism declined relative to everyone else at 15 or so.

[-] AliasAKA@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

I’m pretty sure anyone who visits to see family or similar is considered tourist, because they’d have a tourism visa. So the real percentage of I guess discretionary tourism is probably down much more than 5.5%.

I live in an area with a huge number of Canadian snowbirds in a normal year. This year there are almost none.

[-] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

Oh man, even the birds know it's turned into a shit hole country. Part of this might be climate change related.

[-] kurmudgeon@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I'm boycotting vacations in the United States and I'm an American. I just got back from a 4-day weekend in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Other countries deserve our vacation dollars more than ours does. Until it stops being led by children making stupid fucking decisions.

As a joke I asked a cashier at the NSLC where the bourbon was. She laughed. She knew I was fucking with her. For those not in the know, Canada boxed up all their bourbon and sent it back in retaliation to all of Trump's bullshit with tariffs and what not.

[-] adespoton@lemmy.ca 29 points 1 day ago

It’s not just tourists. International conferences held in the US are seeing record low attendance.

[-] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

And now it's a good chance it's permanent. Twice Idiot Americans voted for this fat, bloated racist cow and honestly, tourists not visiting is only a small part of the damage and shrinkage stupid Americans have brought to the United States. Scientist are also considering leaving or not coming to the US now that's to Idiot Americans and we've had some very high profile scientists already moved to other countries and that's even more worrisome for the US.

[-] Zink@programming.dev 10 points 1 day ago

I'm in the US, and I am kinda surprised that it's only a 5.5% decline.

So essentially for every 18 tourists we used to get, now we still get 17. That seems like a lot. I'm sure we'll drive it much lower. Ugh.

Way more than 5% where I am. Canadian tourism has dropped 80%.

[-] dhork@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

The Daily Beast has contacted the White House for comment.

THE DAILY SLOP (AS I LIKE TO CALL IT) IS TOTALLY WRONG ON THIS, LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE. ALL THESE PEOPLE FROM SHITHOLE CUNTRIES WANT TO COME HERE, SO MANY THAT WE CANT KEEP THEM ALL OUT. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER....

[-] HarneyToker@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

It’s incredibly expensive here, plus you have no rights as a foreigner in this country. Stay away from the US.

[-] TerdFerguson@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago
[-] Stefan_S_from_H@piefed.zip 6 points 1 day ago

Is it really a boycott when the USA doesn't want people entering? There are too many stories about citizens of formerly allied countries that ended up in jail.

[-] optimisticturtle@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

It's really a white nationalist minority ruining it for everyone. Here in MAGAland there are more interracial relationships and more Central Americans than I remember a decade ago.

[-] Spezi@feddit.org 5 points 1 day ago

America breaking one record after the other again 🇺🇸 🦅

[-] TryingToBeGood@reddthat.com 4 points 1 day ago

Don’t blame them at all. Hopefully it extends to the world cup, too.
