Charlie Brown holds Lucy's hand as they walk towards the playground. A sign on the entrance reads, "City Park" He asks, "What would you like to do first, Lucy...Go down the slide?" "What's a slide?" Lucy asks.

"What's a slide?" Charlie Brown repeats as he turns to look at her.

He crouches down and asks, "You've never been on a slide before, Lucy?" She shakes her head: "Uh, uh.."

Charlie Brown stands on top of the ladder leading to the slide. "Well, just hang on to the sides...you'll like this." Charlie Brown promises. "Lucy pretty high up," Lucy observes as she starts to slide down.

"There you go!" "Whee!" Lucy cries as she slips down.

"?" Lucy is puzzled as she sails off the end of the slide and up into the air.

KLUNK! Lucy lands on her head,

Charlie Brown is on all-fours beside the upside down Lucy. He congratulates her: "That was sensational, Lucy! I thought you said you had never been on a slide before?..."

My grandmother called them sliding boards. But despite being born in the states, English was not her native language. She did not learn English until her teens.
