"Reaganomics seems to be working" is such a 1983 thing to say.
When a generally favorable economy and a rising tide for all boats is used to hide the disastrous long-term consequences of infrastructure and social program disinvestment. That claim was already false in 1983, inequality was already on the rise for the first time in decades.
Also the fact that "a rising tide lifting all boats" was just a complete lie. Boats that are tied to the ground are sunk, and they shoot holes in the other boats.
They used very faulty metrics to determine economic health based off of a much earlier, non-speculative-gambling time and when companies were allowed to start blatantly scamming to inflate that bad metric, everyone said "it is working" when nothing had changed for 90% of the population.
Bloom County Comic Strip (1980-1989)
The new home of !bloomcounty@lemm.ee
Bloom County is an American comic strip by Berkeley Breathed which originally ran from December 8, 1980, until August 6, 1989. It examined events in politics and culture through the viewpoint of a fanciful small town in Middle America, where children often have adult personalities and vocabularies and where animals can talk.
