I bought sneakers from Wojas recently. Polish brand and as I understand it they are produced in Poland.

[-] PlatypusStew@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

Bought a Fairphone 6 (e/OS) and finally deleted my Google and Microsoft accounts.

[-] Defectus@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

Does second hand count? If so, I bought a Bosch laundry machine

[-] msage@programming.dev 8 points 2 days ago

Sold stock from ETF which covered US companies.

I'll put that into european funds.

[-] DaTingGoBrrr@lemmy.ml 17 points 2 days ago

Does abandoning steaming/live services and starting with self-hosting count?

[-] cronenthal@discuss.tchncs.de 11 points 2 days ago

I now wear sweaters and polo shirts fully sourced from Europe, including the cotton. They're really nice, too, the quality is amazing.

[-] BenchpressMuyDebil@szmer.info 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

People are also growing cotton in Italy now, so maybe one day we could have cotton that's not only spun in Europe but also grown there. Still, lyocell and flax/hemp would probably be easier.

On Linux, it works great for me over my browser, but i recently tried QBZ, and it both works and looks great! And its got lyrics, and other cool audio features like DAC, EXC, and Qobuz Connect that I don't really understand.

I also gave it a try, but had to cancel my plans to switch due to limited music selection and playlists lacking folders.

I am currently trialing Deezer, so I guess that still counts. Also can't do folders for playlists, but basically all my music transferred over.

[-] Specter@piefed.social 7 points 2 days ago

Deezer is owned by a Russian oligarch. Just something you might want to know about.

[-] Creat@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 day ago

I do, but the company is based in Paris as far as I know, so it's European. At least most employees are (probably?) around there, as are the paid taxes (assuming they pay any).

Given my experiences, I don't think I have any other option that wouldn't be just a way worse experience for me. There's a reason in dropping Spotify after all.

[-] Specter@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

I mean. There is Quobuz which is also French but actually only owned by French people.

[-] Creat@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 day ago

Re-read the comment you originally replied to. Music selection is too small for me.

[-] BenchpressMuyDebil@szmer.info 1 points 2 days ago

not available in Poland sigh

I too switched to DeepL. Also doing the trial period of kagi.com search. Probably gonna buy the "family" plan for me and my dad.

Keep in mind Kagi is US-American though.

[-] HuudaHarkiten@piefed.social 3 points 2 days ago

Good point, I forgot where I was commenting on.

At the moment I'm doing most of my searches with Ecosia (yeah I know, they use bing and google, but at least they are German and planting trees), its only when Ecosia fails, I switch to Kagi. At this rate it will probably take me a year to run out of the 100 free searches that are included in the trial.

I recently bought a Fairphone 3 and installed Ubuntu Touch onto it, ditching Android entirely! I spent about 3 days working on this and would strongly recommend buying one of the newer ones with Ubuntu Touch pre-installed, I'm incredibly happy with it, feel freer than ever, and Google's however-much-money poorer for not having my data!

[-] androidul@lemmy.world 16 points 3 days ago

same here, switched to DeepL; then switched to Mistral AI.

[-] yuumei@feddit.uk 6 points 2 days ago

Got my old PC from 2011 working again, had loads of RAM at the time and runs pretty well now. Put it in the loft and installed proxmox on it. Am now using remote-backups.com from Germany as a remote backup :) for a load of services.

[-] tangible@piefed.social 7 points 2 days ago

Moved my email from iCloud to Proton. For the next step, it would be great if Proton Calendar started supporting (recurring) tasks.

Sneaky Steve boots from Sweden made in Portugal.

[-] beeng@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 2 days ago

Bosch made in West Germany

[-] Defectus@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Which products do they still make in Germany?

[-] beeng@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 day ago

Not sure. This one is 2nd hand. Absolute beast

[-] Defectus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I have a big angle grinder from 1884. Think its from Germany IR Switzerland. It still works like a charm

[-] beeng@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 15 hours ago

Was there electricity back then?

[-] Defectus@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago
  1. But a legit question
[-] jeffep@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

In whose world does a boycott of American goods equal "buy European"? The world is bigger than 2 continents

[-] FatherPeanut@pawb.social 23 points 2 days ago

Likely that the sub is called 'Buy European'.

[-] jeffep@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Yeah, but it's such a dumb impulse that I'd have expected it from an American. As a European it makes me cringe

[-] timestatic@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Buying from europe supports our own economy, reduces co2 output on good being shipped around the globe and reduces supply chain risks. Of course there are many other reliable countries outside of europe, but if I have the choice between European product and product shipped across half the globe I know what I'm taking.

They employ people here, pay taxes here and are more likely to actually follow our jurisdiction fully. If I was trying to claim warranty from a company from another continent it might be more difficult

[-] FatherPeanut@pawb.social 5 points 2 days ago

I feel its more a quirk of the internet, in how things naturally get divided. When browsing the web, you've likely found websites you never heard prior that are really big in other countries. Things just happen to be separated by regions, languages, etc. for purposes of relevance and accessibility.

In our space, things are largely dominated by European and North American influences. Once you cutout the whole USA from that, it's effectively Canada and Europe in this grouping too. I remember back when I was on Reddit, I saw 'Buy Canadian' quite a lot, just seems 'Buy European' is slightly more dominant on Lemmy.

[-] jeffep@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

True, I think that's how the world works mostly atm. Even the apps for very basic functions like taxi or delivery etc. are often completely different, e.g., in southeast Asia.

My main criticism is that the buy European movement is again isolationist. Europe is framed as the good/safe harbour (which it isn't) and the rest of the world is excluded because they are evil (which they aren't).

Instead, I think Europe would do good building stronger ties around the world, with African countries, India, Indonesia etc., at eye level, instead of excluding them and thereby excluding itself from the party as well.

[-] Sylvartas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago

It's not entirely excluding the rest of the world simply because everyone knows there's a ton of shit we just don't make anymore at scale in Europe. I think there is a bit of economic protectionism to it because it carries the idea of bringing some industries back to provide work for Europeans but that's hardly a bad thing.

Where does it say that anyone is boycotting anything? Perhaps you're looking at for !boycottus@lemmy.ca ?

[-] ideonek@piefed.social 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Magic Pages (managed hosting service for Ghost CMS). Ghost is amazing. I thought bloging is dead. It's not. It's intuitive, scalable, natively suppors mailing AND fedi. MP makes it even better.

I signed up as a proof of concept, that this is a valid alternative. But man, did it delivered. It's my first choice now.

Subscribed to inlinestyle.it and have been able to actually use on a daily basis a good 40/50% of the services included in the subscription. Primarily email, personal website, photos, docs and notes. But I also enjoy some PeerTube channels there from time to time.
