US President Donald Trump is seeking $152m (£115m) to reopen the infamous Alcatraz prison as part of his proposed budget for the 2027 fiscal year.

Located near San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, the site, also known as The Rock, was once regarded as one of America's most notorious prisons, but has served as a tourist attraction in recent years.

The budget request is seeking money "to rebuild Alcatraz as a state-of-the-art secure prison facility", with funds covering the first year of costs.

The plan has been met with scepticism by a number of politicians in California, with questions raised about the final cost of the project and the challenges of running Alcatraz as an active prison.

The maximum security facility was closed in 1963. As a tourist site, it is currently run by the National Park Service.

Lock up the Trump administration there. No heat no nothing f those losers

[-] pomegranatefern@sh.itjust.works 13 points 2 days ago

One of many deeply frustrating things about Trump's fire hose of terrible and frequently actively evil ideas is that not only do they come in such volumes that it's overwhelming, but it's also incredibly hard to tell if something is a brief fixation he will quickly move on from or something that is going to be a recurring issue to deal with.

Which is to say: Christ, he's back on this one again?

[-] frongt@lemmy.zip 102 points 3 days ago

Only on the condition that it's only used to imprison him, the members of his administrations, and the architects at organizations like the heritage foundation, and then I'll even chip in some of my own money.

[-] homes@piefed.world 38 points 3 days ago

And that it continue to be used as a tourist site, so people can go there and look at him and the other prisoners there like zoo animals.

[-] Steve@startrek.website 9 points 3 days ago

Look at? You get to piss on them from above.

[-] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 3 days ago

One more condition.

The tourists have access to a button that injects Trump with a tiny, survivable dose of the nerve gas from The Rock.

[-] ProfessorHoover@infosec.pub 2 points 2 days ago

Wouldn't that just get pushed until he dies anyway, like that Black Mirror episode where they torture the uploaded consciousness of a man for entertainment?

[-] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Yes, that's the hope.

Like yeah, you'd have to have some limiter on it so that it wouldn't just kill him quickly, but yes, the goal is absolutely to put him through as much excruciating pain as possible, in public.

Sic Semper Tyrannis.

[-] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 10 points 3 days ago

It could be his own Elba. I would be willing to chip in for that while we eradicate Trumpists from government.

[-] jonesey71@lemmus.org 4 points 3 days ago

Can the gift shop do souvenirs to order? Like if I wanted one of his tiny fingers from his tiny hands?

[-] TwilitSky@lemmy.world 66 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Alcatraz was closed because it was a scam not worth operating like Trump's casinos and his marriages.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 2 days ago

likely he wants to use Alcatraz as a laundering scheme, like his casino with russian money via deustche bank.

[-] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 days ago

I thought it was because maintaining an island is a bitch and it's easier to build a prison in the middle of a desert with the same effect IE Fulton.

[-] TwilitSky@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago

Yeah so the boat company made money the supply companies. The city and government of San Francisco. Everyone was on the take.

[-] 4grams@awful.systems 41 points 3 days ago

What a fucking moron.

[-] NauticalNoodle@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

it would cost a lot more than that.

[-] night_petal@piefed.social 15 points 3 days ago

I fucking hate being stuck in the US. It is legitimately embarrassing. I wish I could move, but that takes years and tens of thousands of dollars to do correctly, even if you were to try to go somewhere with a low GDP.

it was made good use by YURI in RA2.

[-] Witchfire@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

The worst part is he'll probably get it. But ask for $152m to improve infrastructure and Republicans say no while Democrats say "No. #blm :)"

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 16 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I've been to Alcatraz prison and gone on the tour and one of the things that she spoke about was how much of a pain it was being on an island. Since you're totally the mercy of the sea is to whether or not you can get supplies in.

The only real advantage of Alcatraz was that it was difficult to escape from but you can get the exact same result with fencing and guards, so there's no point putting up with the logistical challenges have been stuck on an island, which is why it was closed.

[-] monketman82@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

What makes you think dUmpf wants to provide supplies to the island?

[-] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 11 points 3 days ago

Kill 2 birds with one stone and make it into a ballroom.

[-] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 3 points 3 days ago

I second this. It seems everyone in Lumpty Trumpty’s orbit is either:

A rapist, child abuser, fraudster, and/or a war criminal.

[-] lechekaflan@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Putin's running dog.

[-] phoenixarise@lemmy.world 24 points 3 days ago

$152 million won’t even bring it up to code. The answer is no. Quit distracting us with this nonsense and just go to Hell. Satan’s waiting.

[-] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 31 points 3 days ago

Buddy, $152m won’t even bring it up to code. Not that he cares.

[-] TryingToBeGood@reddthat.com 10 points 3 days ago

Been a minute since I’ve been there—is there even a source of potable water on the island, or was that shipped in as well?

[-] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago

It’s still all shipped in and out to my knowledge.

[-] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 days ago

Nope. All shipped in.

it takes billions from what ive heard.

[-] kreskin@lemmy.world 16 points 3 days ago

He's spending money like crazy on useless stuff we dont need.

[-] trackball_fetish@lemmy.wtf 7 points 3 days ago

As intended. They're trying to crash the dollar/currency system to replace it with some crypto backed nonsense. Well that and to make sure the technofascists can own everything.

[-] kreskin@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I guess this is why you can never give a president the power of the purse.

This highlights another breakage in the setup of the American system-- citizens need the power to recall both congressional reps and the president, and justices. It cant just be by periodic elections, and impeachment isnt really a functional process. It barely exists as a check/balance.

Its almost as if the founding fathers designed the system to be subject to special interests acting outside of citizens interests. I think they mistrusted the people more than they mistrustsed aristorcats and wealthy people like themselves. Not beleivers in true democracy at all, in the end.

[-] Prior_Industry@lemmy.world 15 points 3 days ago

The Rock has been on the TV again I see

[-] null@lemmy.org 20 points 3 days ago

We’re fighting wars. We can’t take care of daycare.

[-] sturmblast@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago

This is so stupid

[-] Bahnd@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

Do we get to put him there when the renovations are done?

[-] lechekaflan@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

ADX Florence is far stiffer and built for even worse criminals while having much less logistical and operational issues vs. Alcatraz.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Priorities, I guess.

[-] TryingToBeGood@reddthat.com 14 points 3 days ago

Donnie, honey, tell me you’ve never been to Alcatraz without telling me you’ve never been to Alcatraz.

[-] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 13 points 3 days ago

That dipshit isn’t even asking for Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage and Ed Harris to work there?

[-] SnarkoPolo@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

To use as a political prison.

[-] Sharkticon@lemmy.zip 9 points 3 days ago

Isn't it technically a national park? Therefore the direct property of the United States people?

[-] trackball_fetish@lemmy.wtf 8 points 3 days ago

Like the national parks they're attempting to sell? You gotta understand, there is no law anymore. Without enforcement, they are just words.

[-] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Trump technically works for the people. I don't think technicalities matter anymore.

[-] CobraChicken3000@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago

[-] Akasazh@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

Apex symbol politics

[-] santa@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago

Dude grasping at straws at this point…

[-] umbraroze@slrpnk.net 3 points 3 days ago

Of course Trump wants to reopen Alcatraz.

It is famously a prison where the worst criminals went. And just as famously, a prisoner escaped, never to be seen again.

He's just planning ahead. Personal plans. They're not particularly good plans, they're not cunning plans - in fact, they're pretty stupid plans, to be perfectly honest.
