Donald Trump said Saturday he will deploy Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to US airports on Monday if an agreement isn’t reached to fund the Department of Homeland Security amid a partial government shutdown.

It is unclear what function the ICE agents would perform since they’re not trained in airport security screening. TSA screeners have a several months-long training period before they’re on the job, though airline employees and private security companies have partnered on line controlling and guarding exit doors.

The agents could potentially help in more limited roles — like managing lines, directing passengers or helping move people through the checkpoint process — to free up trained TSA officers for critical security functions.

Isn't he basically admitting that ICE is his private paramilitary organization?

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 48 points 2 weeks ago

We passed that point about a year ago afair..

[-] jballs@sh.itjust.works 66 points 2 weeks ago

I hate when the media sane-washes the random tweets of this dumb ass mother fucker. This article goes to great length to talk about what roles ICE could play with limited training, when Trump had 100% not put an ounce of thought into this. They should just say "Trump proposes putting ICE into the airports, which makes no fucking sense." But instead they try to invent ways that maybe it could possibly work?

CNN is owned by right wing corpos now. It’s compromised and has been for a while.

[-] altkey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 weeks ago

Why, it makes. Bag everyone going in and out of the country as illegals. Grind US's face into the ground, manufacture a crisis to make politicians cave in and fund DHS. Then, 50/50, take agents back or continue to deploy them into airports because no one can prevent it. Does it sound unlikely in March, 2026?

[-] FrChazzz@lemmus.org 52 points 2 weeks ago

Honestly? If it means more ICE off the streets harassing decent people and stuck doing boring-ass airport security, then let's go. There are only so many ICE guys to go around. It's not the infinite respawn that he seems to think it is.

[-] how_we_burned@lemmy.zip 28 points 2 weeks ago

I think you've forgotten how xenophobic these assholes are.

They're gonna be stopping every second person at the scanners pulling their guns and hurling them off to some concentration camp

[-] stephen01king@piefed.zip 18 points 2 weeks ago

Well, maybe people would actually realise how much the US has turned into a fascist nation and stop going there. And maybe the Americans who are wealthy enough to travel overseas can no longer overlook how bad their country had become if they have to deal with ICE, instead.

[-] 0_o7@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 weeks ago

I think you've forgotten people in pedokistan are absolutely fine as long as they don't "see" it.

[-] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Yeah... I laughed when I saw this. Like, don't threaten us with a good time.

...i wonder if they won't wear masks? Everyone be sure to take lots of selfies in line.

[-] northface@lemmy.ml 39 points 2 weeks ago

The agents could potentially help in more limited roles — like managing lines, directing passengers or helping move people through the checkpoint process — to free up trained TSA officers for critical security functions.

Ah yes, ICE who is famously known for helping people, de-escalating situations and assisting other authorities in performing the job those are trained for.

[-] lettruthout@lemmy.world 37 points 2 weeks ago

Ooh…. ICE at the airport? Sounds like a good opportunity to let them know our opinion of them.

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 4 points 2 weeks ago

Sounds like you like body cavity searches?

[-] CileTheSane@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 weeks ago

You've seen what they do to people that let them know their opinion of ICE?

[-] LoafedBurrito@lemmy.world 28 points 2 weeks ago

"We don't have enough line cooks to keep the restaurant open, so I'm sending in nurses to help them out"

Do you hear how dumb this sounds out loud Donny?

[-] ripcord@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

I'd have gone with "mouth-breathing stormtroopers" instead of "nurses", but yeah.

Nurses are extremely important

[-] LoafedBurrito@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

it was an analogy, geez.

"We don't have enough IT guys to fix these servers, send in the accountants." Is that better?

[-] Angrydeuce@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

As if I didn't already spend hours of my life trying to explain to accountants why they cant just continue using 10 year old hosts for the core production infrastructure lol

[-] ripcord@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago
[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 5 points 2 weeks ago

If the nurses were SS, yes

[-] ThomasWilliams@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

more like "we've run out of nurses, so we'll send in abbatoir workers to do the job"

[-] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 27 points 2 weeks ago

Airport violence will increase with the masked ICE and fake ICE goons.

[-] AmbitiousProcess@piefed.social 27 points 2 weeks ago

Oh goodie, making tourism and its resulting spending even LESS likely! #winning!!!!!!!!!

[-] Wataba@sh.itjust.works 27 points 2 weeks ago

Don't fucking go to fascist America.

Holy fucking shit how stupid are non-Americans to keep doing this?

[-] leadore@lemmy.world 23 points 2 weeks ago

Great, do it! That should go over really really well. 🤣 And keep them from going out and doing their gestapo duties while they're at it.

[-] CileTheSane@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

They've going to continue being the Gestapo, just at the airport now.

[-] leadore@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Yep! And that's not going to go over well with the more well-to-do business and political frequent flyers that have been either supporting trump or looking the other way for him. There's no way ICEholes will be able to act civilized or in any other way than the outlaw thug lifestyle to which they've become accustomed.

I just read that Homan has confirmed they're going to start tomorrow (Monday). I wonder if they'll be wearing camo and masks, or will just be cosplaying in TSA uniforms. Either way, they won't be able to hide who they are and they'll be treating people like shit. They won't know what to do if they can't wave a gun in their faces to make them obey.

[-] frustrated_phagocytosis@fedia.io 22 points 2 weeks ago

Oh boy, ICE agents in customer service roles? That should be fun.

[-] sturmblast@lemmy.world 21 points 2 weeks ago

25th... amendment.

[-] grue@lemmy.world 18 points 2 weeks ago

If TSA can't work because there's no funding, how the fuck would using ICE instead be any different?

It is fucked up and blatantly illegal that, despite the fact that the entire point of this exercise is to starve ICE of cash, they're somehow still getting paid.

[-] HermitBee@feddit.uk 27 points 2 weeks ago

ICE got paid a 4 year budget upfront, which they are allowed to roll over. So they're not getting paid, they just have a reserve several times the size of their annual budget.

[-] grue@lemmy.world 23 points 2 weeks ago

Yep, and it's bullshit.

(In fact, I'd argue that since ICE is a de-facto army, it's literally unconstitutional).

This is TERRIBLE! Transportation CEOS gave Trump MILLIONS and he's RUINING their Businesses!

-Republicans but UNIRONICALLY!

[-] Furbag@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago

That ought to blow over well. Nothing could possibly go wrong with jackboot thugs being asked to manage lines and direct passengers.

Remember folks, be sure to wear your "Fuck ICE" and "Abolish ICE" t-shirts to the airports this week. Be loud and be proud.

[-] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Oh man I'm the other way around, I just want to get on my flight. Last time the body scanner guy tried to ask me why I was opting out, and I told him to go ask on the internet. There's a severe power imbalance and if he wants to chat about it, then I expect him to decide I said the wrong thing.

Like, I get that most of them just need to pay rent. My issue with it is systemic, not personal. But there are some guys who are just looking for excuses to mess up your day. Why mess with them while I'm vulnerable and they're getting paid by the hour?

That's just TSA. I think a much higher percentage of ICE wants to go above and beyond while in costume.

[-] Prior_Industry@lemmy.world 11 points 2 weeks ago

Making even more "normies" aware of the police state Trump's attempting to implement? Interesting gambit.

[-] lemmylump@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago
[-] mthomson@forum.macaque.social 5 points 2 weeks ago

Go for it. At least then they'd be too busy to harass people trying to live their lives.

[-] plz1@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Well, if he wants to use the egregious amount of money granted to ICE last year, to fulfill the role of TSA, so be it.

[-] LoafedBurrito@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

They are already in New York, Atlanta, and Chicago standing around, doing nothing and wasting taxpayer dollars.

[-] ramble81@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 weeks ago

At least they gave some potential thing that they could do, because frankly I was having trouble coming up with what.
