The protesters also lit off flares, according to Sky News Australia

Angry pro-Palestine protesters marched to the Sydney Opera House on Monday and appeared to chant "gas the Jews" and "f--- the Jews," according to an Australian media report.

The protesters also lit off flares, according to Sky News Australia.

A video of part of the protest, which began peacefully earlier in the day, was posted to X -- formerly known as Twitter -- by the Australian Jewish Association.

This is just disgusting behaviour. No one should ever be calling for genocide, regardless of any circumstances. Also, why are all Jewish people being conflated with the Israeli government? Jews outside Israel have no power over its government, and even Israelis had to go through some five hung elections to get Netanyahu back in power, indicating that he clearly has less than 50% of the country’s support.

Now if they had been shouting “fuck Bibi” or “end the occupation” or “no more genocide against Palestine” I’d be right there with them. These idiots have no fucking clue how to garner support, so all they’re doing is giving Israel more moral high-ground. Goddamn Nazis need to learn some physical consequences.

[-] rockSlayer@lemmy.world 20 points 2 years ago

Right there with you. Anyone that didn't immediately shut that shit down was complicit, making it a bunch of fascists masking their bullshit in leftist positions.

[-] Amaltheamannen@lemmy.ml 16 points 2 years ago

If you read the article you will notice this was a minority group of idiots that were quickly shut down by the protest organisers.

[-] Instigate@aussie.zone 8 points 2 years ago

Yeah, I did note that in the article when I read it. My comment wasn’t directed at the protest organisers - it was specifically towards the Nazis in the crowd. I thought my comment indicated that; sorry if I wasn’t clear enough.

[-] Psyduck_world@lemmy.world 15 points 2 years ago

I swear every good cause have god damn idiots like these messing them up.

[-] tryptaminev@feddit.de 13 points 2 years ago

Israels is trying to rope all Jews in, demanding support and claiming itself to be the state representing judaism as a whole.

Unfortunately many jewish organizations around the world consider unconditional support for Israel as part of their goals, even when Israel is commiting crimes against humanity. There is also jewish organizations with a balanced view towards Israel, but they are unfortunately much smaller.

Israel is trying to rope all Jews in

As a secular non-Israeli Jew, this is absolutely correct. They correctly state that they're the country of last resort, the refuge for Jews if things go full Nazi in whatever country you're in. Then they use that status to try and get unconditional support for all their policies.

Likud, Shas, the various hyper-religious parties and all their allies shouldn't be allowed to run a corner store, let alone a country.

Especially Otzma Yehudit. Those people are scum of the highest order.

[-] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 5 points 2 years ago

Ironically, Israel is getting closer to full nazi than most other places with large Jewish populations. Perhaps they will soon be fleeing for Europe or North America.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago

Also, why are all Jewish people being conflated with the Israeli government?

You've got me, but I've had to justify that multiple times about myself.

[-] Instigate@aussie.zone 2 points 2 years ago

I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with that. That’s not okay. You deserve to have an identity beyond Zionism and whatever makes up the current Knesset. I’m sorry that other people don’t have the nuance to understand you. Please keep bringing your point forth, we need to hear more Jewish and Palestinian voices in this conflict.

My voice honestly doesn’t matter. I’m not Palestinian nor am I Israeli. But I hope it’s heard and brings civilians - the innocent casualties on both sides - together to understand that their respective representatives are engaging in atrocities and to protest those so-called representatives.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

I'm not Israeli, just Jewish. Which is why I hate having to explain that I'm not a Zionist just because I'm a Jew.

[-] Instigate@aussie.zone 2 points 2 years ago

I can’t imagine what that’s like; I’m so sorry for your experience. It’s not okay for others to lump you in with a crowd based solely on your religion or cultural background. That’s honestly just discrimination, and no tolerant society should accept that. I hope that we soon have a day where your existence doesn’t need to be explained to those who don’t understand it.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

I appreciate it, thank you.

[-] Amaltheamannen@lemmy.ml 112 points 2 years ago

Nobody here read the article, don't take the rate bait. This was a small group of idiots in a larger protest. The organisers quickly shut them down and made it clear this was not welcome.

[-] ryathal@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 years ago

Some protestors said the quiet part our loud.

[-] June@lemm.ee 62 points 2 years ago

I feel like you can be pro-palestine without being antisemitic…

[-] Tedesche@lemmy.world 20 points 2 years ago

Just like you can be anti-Hamas without being anti-Palestine or pro-Israel.

As with virtually any war, the problems here are two relatively small groups of people with radical ideas that are enforcing their will upon millions of innocent people.

[-] Clent@lemmy.world 14 points 2 years ago

These people only hate Jewish people. If they had any love for Palestine they wouldn't be fanning this flame.

[-] June@lemm.ee 10 points 2 years ago

The people chanting ‘gas the Jews’, absolutely. No question about it.

But the majority of folks that support Palestine are not antisemitic.

[-] McBain@feddit.ch 52 points 2 years ago

This is instead of answering multiple people:

Hamas is an anti-Semitic terror organization (not anti Israeli). You can't really separate between Hamas and Gaza citizens because Hamas controls Gaza. Hamas has day camps for children (in order to brainwash them from a young age), they have TV shows, radio channels, etc...

Mein kampf is a best seller in Palestine (see the comments and other links accept the answer).

Mein kampf was translated to Arabic in the 1930s and it's still spread in some countries in order to create anti semitism (of course), and it's not just in Muslim countries.

Hamas don't give a toss about Palestinians, they want to please Iran and Qatar.

[-] McBain@feddit.ch 12 points 2 years ago

Read the first line I wrote.

[-] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 10 points 2 years ago

Guess you must be a big 9/11 supporter then. Since the US government controls the country and indoctrinates its children, there’s basically no difference between civilians and the military. Great logic there.

That's disgusting. I'm pro Palestine but anti semitism is revolting

[-] cupcakezealot 39 points 2 years ago

Newspaper trying to smear Palestine by labelling white supremacists as pro Palestine...

At least we know nothing they say matters, except in the case of prosecuting hate speech and threats.

Oh and worth putting them on a watch list for potential domestic terrorists.

[-] Ringmasterincestuous@aussie.zone 30 points 2 years ago

It wasn’t the sky news Australia team on their lunch break was it?

[-] xmunk@sh.itjust.works 19 points 2 years ago

On their lunch break? I'm sure it was a company event and they were on the clock.

[-] TastyWheat@lemmy.world 29 points 2 years ago

See, us Aussies have a word for these type of people - cunts.

Nazi works too. Fucking animals.

[-] Phoenixbouncing@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

No, that last one's zoophiliac, but probably works too.

[-] Narrrz@kbin.social 28 points 2 years ago

it's really hard to have sympathy for Palestine when these are their cheerleaders

[-] Instigate@aussie.zone 65 points 2 years ago

It’s easy to have sympathy for Palestine; it’s very difficult to have sympathy for Hamas.

Anyone cheering on Hamas is promoting crimes against humanity which is objectively abhorrent. Anyone who cares for the Palestinian people caught up in the conflict just has functioning empathy.

[-] Annoyed_Crabby@monyet.cc 10 points 2 years ago

When people talk about this conflict they always forgot the normal people, they tend to get lumped together with the devil. The war is about barbarian vs thief, and normal people who just want to live in peace are the one suffered.

[-] peachybuttcheek@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Didn’t the “normal people” vote for Hamas or am I remembering it wrong?

Very few of the protesters were saying anything antisemitic and the other protesters did their best to shut them down. This is no better than people saying BLM was just looting and burning down stores.

[-] P1r4nha@feddit.de 5 points 2 years ago

I guess so if you walk around with a myopic world view. Guess what? There's more than just two homogeneous sides to almost every issue.

[-] Catoblepas 3 points 2 years ago

You are talking about an area of the world that is almost 50% children, based on the words of people who have likely never even been there.

[-] Silviecat44@aussie.zone 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

My thoughts also

[-] AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space 18 points 2 years ago

I’m sure these people can expect a visit from the Australian Federal Police pretty quickly. Australia still has some tough antiterrorism/national-security laws on the books that could be used to put them in a deep, dark (or constantly fluorescent-lit) hole they won’t emerge from.

[-] Kayel@aussie.zone 16 points 2 years ago

As this doesn't interfere with mining interests or criticism of the government the AFP will be sleeping through any antisemitic sentiment

The whole Israel/Palestine thing is gonna be the media's wedge issue of the week, isn't it?

Send the pricks back to the middle east if they want to act like that. Disgraceful
