The best weapon in any Dark Souls game was the Craftsman Hammer in 2, I killed gods with that thing and I haven't found a good replacement since.
I’m finishing a 3rd play through now after a few years since my last run and I have to ask… how is it so good?
Everything feels like it belongs in the world. The combat is insanely satisfying and there are so many build options.
I went Deprived and I’m using a dex build with Corvian Great Scythe. Went deprived so I can respec to any build without issue.
Yes, the world is what sets it apart for me, the lore is somehow better at world-building than the other two.
Every story is a tad bit more depressive, characters far gone, everything that one step more hopeless, the desperation more real, etc.
Also best cat, best hub, best hexes, ...
I have such a love hate relationship with this one. It might be my favourite souls game aesthetically, and I always end up having a good time. But there are some seriously annoying things in 2 that always make it a little bit of struggle to want to get going again.
Dsrk Souls 1 is a masterpiece but there is some bullshit in that game too. Its ok to like things that are flawed.
The thing which pissed me off was PvP level was tied to your total souls accumulated, not your current level.
Dark Souls II wanted you to spend every soul you've earned, and disregard any meta-level for the sake of PvP matchmaking.
So if you ever got stuck on an area for too long, or grind, you might shoot past other players and never get matched fairly.
Conversely, you might start getting paired with players way above your level.
Yea that was to stop degenerates like myself from becoming level 10 darkwraiths.
For some reason people didn't like that much.
It also dovetails with the hex spells which cost souls per cast, using the forbidden magic literally ruins you. Super cool aesthetically, hated it at the time.
I want to retire to Majula!!
What's on his face?

I said this ad nauseum but DS2 is the perfect candidate for a remake. The game has many small issues that pile on but are easily fixable if they ever decide to go back and fix them.
Remove the agility mechanic, fix hitboxes, scale back enemy placements in some areas and the game would be already 10x better.

I've got the original release on PC and haven't played it since release.
I'm considering buying the new Scholars version but I found out that they've added lots of new enemies and changed quite a bit about the game.
Now I'm not sure if I should
- stick with the original
- use original and add mods to update graphics/shaders
- play Scholars version
- play Scholars version with mod for original enemy placement and numbers
Not sure what's the best way to play it now. I'd ideally still like to have the multiplayer features so not sure if mods would ruin that either.
any advice?
I personally go with the original on my replays now. I find the new enemy placement and petrified statue re-arrangement to be more frustrating than anything. But that’s just me. I know people say that scholar is the way to go, it was Miyazaki’s interpretation of the game. I don’t get it. The original is fine.

Some mods like the lighting engine (DS2LE) are fine to play online with, while others might get you a ban.
I don't see the point of modding Scholar to be like vanilla if you haven't tried Scholar yet. Sounds like you've been spooked by the online hivemind. Scholar is great and it includes the DLCs.
I say just play Scholars version.
I hate Majula and I hate dark souls 2
Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes
This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".
Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.
Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:
[BB] This enemy is so difficult!
or
[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?
