This makes me feel bad for Trans people even more.

[-] Wataba@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 minutes ago

Why would America allow an openly transphobic government into power like this?

Oh right...

[-] Throbbing_banjo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 90 points 2 hours ago

"We apologize for the inconvenience this causes you."

Yes I'm sure you fucking do.

[-] andros_rex@lemmy.world 46 points 2 hours ago

If they try this shit in my state, I’d fucking sue.

I had surgery BECAUSE it would let me change my drivers license. I paid $5500 as a broke college student because I was getting turned down for jobs with that stupid “F.”

I don’t understand how any of this is legal. The constitution prohibits “ex post facto” laws - how can you revoke someone’s documentation when they complied with the laws as they were at the time?

[-] CocaineShrimp@sh.itjust.works 37 points 1 hour ago

I don't understand how any of this is legal

That's the thing - It's not. They don't give a shit, and the judicial system isn't doing anything about it

[-] Sconrad122@lemmy.world 34 points 2 hours ago

This letter reads to me like it is someone from the Kansas executive branch (run by Democrat Governor Laura Kelly) legitimately apologizing that they are bound by Republican made, veto-overridden law to cause this inconvenience, but maybe I'm being too generous

That could be the case, I suppose. If they really wanted to be assholes about it, they could just not send anything at all. This at least explains how the recipient is effected and what they can/need to do

[-] Vorticity@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago

That's how I read this, too. The government isn't a monolith that just agrees with every law they have to follow. They do have to follow the law until it is challenged, though. Hopefully courts in KS knock this down.

[-] minnow@lemmy.world 2 points 15 minutes ago

Your right to self identify doesn't exist under fascist rule. Identify as you're told, or face the consequences.

Today it's gender. I wonder what facet of identity they'll seek to control tomorrow. Sexual orientation? Religion? Political affiliation?

[-] 4am@lemmy.zip 1 points 5 minutes ago

Race.

Oh, you can’t change that? Well, the penalty’s pretty stiff, unfortunately…

[-] LostWanderer@fedia.io 43 points 2 hours ago

They knew this would be a deeply unpopular bill, which is why they refused to open it up to public input...This sets a dangerous precedent for further discriminatory laws. All because the chucklefucks that run Kansas legislation in my home state are fucking bigots and wanted some brownie points from a dementia suffering pres and his vocal minority. Disgusting, I don't want my neighbors or Kansas citizens being fucked over like this, it pisses me off on a scale that has no number.

[-] JoshuaFalken@lemmy.world 32 points 2 hours ago

First they came for the transgendered, and I didn't speak up because they didn't allot a public comment period.

[-] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 42 points 2 hours ago
[-] transMexicanCRTcowfart@lemmy.world 10 points 2 hours ago

Oh, but they "apologize for the inconvenience".

[-] stinerman@feddit.online 4 points 41 minutes ago* (last edited 40 minutes ago)

The DMV might actually be sorry about it. The governor (who oversees the DMV) vetoed the bill, but the legislature overrode her veto. If it was up to the governor, this law would have never been in place.

[-] Pavidus@lemmy.world 42 points 2 hours ago

This is total horse shit, but not even a grace period? That's extra evil.

[-] doesit@sh.itjust.works 1 points 27 minutes ago* (last edited 7 minutes ago)

Am I misunderstanding? They have to exchange their license for a new one (I assume with the actual gender).
edit : English is not my native language. Thanks for the feedback.

[-] smiletolerantly@awful.systems 5 points 23 minutes ago

No, with the incorrect one.

[-] minnow@lemmy.world 1 points 13 minutes ago

actual gender

Trans people are born trans and are biologically the get they identify as.

Here are a number of studies that show the biological reality of transgender people. It’s important to note that although some of these studies suggest causation (ie, HOW a person is born transgender) we can’t know if there’s more than one cause, and therefore using any one test to see if somebody is “biologically trans” is impossible.

Sex vs Gender and the role of the SRY gene specifically (as opposed to the Y chromosome generally) in the development of each, as well as the possible role of AR (androgen receptor) gene https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6505576/

A correlation is found between AR allele repeat length and a person being transgender https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3402034/

The brains of trans people more closely resemble those of their chosen gender identity than their natal sex https://www.ese-hormones.org/media/1506/transgender-brains-are-more-like-their-desired-gender-from-an-early-age.pdf

A trans person's brain more closely resembles their chosen gender as demonstrated by their brain's response to olfactory stimulation with androstadienone https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fendo.2014.00060/full

Estrogen signaling pathways identified which tell the brain to develop as one gender or the other, as well as mechanisms by which physical development can happen in one way while brain development can happen in the other https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-019-53500-y

Cornell University summarizes 72 studies regarding the effect of gender transition on transgender well-being (with links to all 72 studies) https://whatweknow.inequality.cornell.edu/topics/lgbt-equality/what-does-the-scholarly-research-say-about-the-well-being-of-transgender-people/

So no, you've got it backwards: they're being forced to turn in their id with their actual gender in exchange for one with the incorrect gender marker.

Fuck Kansas

[-] grimpy@lemmy.myserv.one 1 points 44 minutes ago

State of Kansas, please surrender your statehood now!

[-] Peanutbjelly@sopuli.xyz 9 points 2 hours ago

Actually evil.

This exists for no reason other than to intentionally harm a small and already marginalized group.

It's a shame that fighting groups like the heritage foundation needed to take a couple decade backseat for insane cultural warring based entirely on misrepresenting each other and refusing to communicate.

And trying to point out that fact got you labeled as "enemy group" by everyone involved, and most people aren't involved enough to tell the difference between things like faux opposition within the establishment, and legitimate progressive groups with separate but legitimate grievances.

Get the peasants fighting the peasants, because if you pump enough noise into the environment, people just stop trying to comprehend outside of their bubble.

These monsters will destroy the world in order to apply their fickle bigotry.

Fuck the heritage foundation, bohemian grove, atlas network, and their myriad of other shapes used to obfuscate while affecting control. The rich have class solidarity, and they've done an amazing job getting everyone else to fight themselves.

Trans rights are human rights.

[-] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 23 points 3 hours ago

So.. Cycling is the best trans inclusive transportation method?

[-] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 4 points 1 hour ago

yes, they did this for the benefit of trans people /s

[-] ServantOfRa 1 points 1 hour ago

Always was.

[-] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 4 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

First they are born Trans, and that's already a pain in the ass, then they feel bad because of gender dysphoria and and then society decide to make that worse by telling bullshit to them and exclude them from being considered humans 😭

“The devil came from Kansas…” - Procol Harum, way back whenever

[-] unmagical@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 hour ago

This also costs money and can threaten their ability to vote.

[-] brad_troika@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago
[-] unmagical@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

They just effectively expired all trans Kansan drivers licenses. If they want to drive or use their drivers licenses as an ID they need to pay about $30 to get a new one.

Edit: Of course, this benefits no one. It is a blatant attempt to harass and discriminate against a vulnerable minority population.

[-] zikzak025@lemmy.world 7 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Kansas requires voters to present a state-issued form of ID to be able to vote, which is almost always going to be a driver's license or a state ID, both of which are affected by this change. If the license/ID is invalidated, no ability to vote.

Given that midterms are coming up, this could very well be a deliberate move to disenfranchise members of the trans community by denying their right to vote at a key political moment.

[-] brad_troika@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago

I assumed from the letter that by issuing a new licence they mean they give you a new one for free but according to news articles they will not.

[-] andros_rex@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

The SAVE Act will make it harder to vote if your documentation doesn’t match your birth certificate. (article is from last year, but the bill just now passed the House I believe.)

It costs money to get a drivers license replaced.

[-] Gork@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 hour ago

Time to bring out the pitchforks.

[-] sudo_shinespark@lemmy.world 6 points 2 hours ago

I would get upset, but you gotta consider those 8 chapters in the bible about transitioning is wrong and makes god angry /s

How’d you make a fully blank comment? Even the raw info is blank.

[-] notsosure@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

I ~~hate~~ profoundly dislike Christians.

[-] Marshezezz 5 points 1 hour ago

I hate them

[-] frustrated_phagocytosis@fedia.io 1 points 2 hours ago

Let's say someone is leaving Kansas soon and couldn't care less about having a valid Kansas DL. Can they still demand it from them? Do you not own the ID itself

[-] missingno@fedia.io 6 points 2 hours ago

The point is that their license is effectively considered to be expired. Kansas is asking them to turn the old one in for a new one. Nothing's going to happen if they don't, but then they're just holding onto a worthless piece of plastic they can no longer use.

So it can't be used for voting anymore? What a ripoff.

[-] Lupus@feddit.org 3 points 2 hours ago

Do you not own the ID itself

I don't know about the US but here in Germany you don't, all those official documents are property of the federal republic.
