Why bring your community into a walled garden when you have an open federated community right here?
It isn't about leaving Lemmy, but finding another channel that is more conducive to collaboration and lengthy conversations.
Fluxer is standing out with their terms and privacy policy. No data scraping and you retain ownership of your content. I have yet to fully try it out. Stoat if you want text only on desktop. Ditch discord now, they have been abusing user data and privacy for far too long. You can go to https://alternativeto.net/ and do more in depth research into alternatives.
There are maybe half a dozen platforms I see people suggesting as Discord alternatives. So the list of options is fairly short.
I guess my questions would be:
- Do any alternate platforms look like they would meet your needs (or your desires for the community you're trying to build)?
- Which of the platforms that fit (1) are your followers willing to join?
- Which platforms that fit (1) would your Discord community be willing to move to?
And I think that if you see an option you like the look of, there's no harm in trying it out. Create a space, invite a few of your Discord people to take it for a test drive with you. (Wait to advertise it until you know whether you'll keep it.) If it seems like a good fit, then you'll be free to drop Discord.
My personal situation with these platforms is that I am willing to create an account anywhere, but there's no point in signing up to a platform unless there is someone I want to contact or a community I want to join. So far, despite the backlash all my connections are still only on Discord. And therefore, so am I. I'm probably not the only one like that.
Yeah, that is what I am finding. Takes a while to build a community, so wanted to get others' input on whether being on Discord is an issue and, if so, what alternatives there are.
Doesn't appear to be much consensus on an alternative, and that a mass migration is happening. So for now will probably stick to the Discord channel.
They say they have reversed their position, the question is do you trust their word. I know i don't as for contenders stoat looks promising but i would hold off for now.
