The trusting one is very clearly an invitation by one of our cats to rub her belly. In fact, if she flops over like that and you don't rub her belly right away she will vocally object to your inaction.

Her favourite belly rubs are extended both-hands affairs, and she demands them just about every morning.

Are cats ever happy? Asking because I'm not a cat person and have never actually experienced a nice and/or happy cat.

Very much so! Mine will run to greet me when I get home and flop on the ground for belly rubs. They actually like belly rubs despite what the infographic says. They'll climb in to bed with me to cuddle and purr or stand on me and make biscuits (kneading with their paws). Sometimes they'll be sleeping, and I'll wake them up to pet them and cuddle, and they'll vocalize and have body language to show they are happy.

However, they are both terrified of strangers, so it would take multiple days of you visiting before you'd see much of the goodbehavior.

Other cats are fine with strangers. There's an outdoor cat in my neighborhood that I'll sometimes pet. He'll flop about and arch his back while being pet to show he's having a good time.

Cat body language can be a little counterintuitive to read, but there can be very definite signs that they are happy.

Yes. It can vary from cat to cat just like any animal and depends on the situation. My one little boy Stewie (a little orange boy, sorry I don't have a pic at the moment) likes to greet his people every morning, and you can see the excitement when he hears his name. He arches his back, wiggles his little butt and rams your legs until you pick him up and cuddle him for a few minutes, purring like an old Ford with a misfire.

If you're not around cats much you probably won't notice easily, because a lot of cats are a little wary around people they are not familiar with, and with some cats the cues can be fairly subtle. Some have resting bitch face like my other cat Trudy. She will be absolutely happy as hell but somehow still looks like she's plotting your murder.
