While I do think this is common, it was not my experience personally. I'm a transmasc enby, and my journey started with me wearing booty shorts and crop tops during the summer after a couple of years not wearing anything femme due to dysphoria. Once I had top surgery done and my face reshaped a bit, I was able to see myself as a boy in femme clothing instead of feeling like a fake guy.
(None of these feelings apply to others btw. Trans peeps of all types are valid no matter what they wear. This was my dysphoria talking only to me, specifically.)
