These memes always make me feel awkward considering I work at a data center

But also I'm not the one guzzling all the water and power, I'm just a guy working here to get paid

[-] caurvo 25 points 5 months ago

It's very hard to live in the system without somehow taking part. I work in marketing adjacent industries. My job is fully bullshit. But I love my team, I love problem solving, and I love working with research data. So I'm definitely part of the problem, but where I live there's not much else my skills work for. And as the sole income earner, renting, I'm insecure enough financially that I don't really have a choice. Almost like the system was designed that way...

You don't need to feel bad for having a job that keep you alive.

But whatever you do feel bad, just work slower.

[-] prole 18 points 5 months ago

Have you seen the CIA field sabotage guide?

Just a completely unrelated question

[-] Saledovil@sh.itjust.works 11 points 5 months ago

The problem isn't the data center, but rather that the data center is being wasted on running AI. AI is a uniquely wasteful application, like crypto mining. If the data center does something actually useful, then it might provide utility greater than its expenses and externalities.

I believe most of our clients are healthcare, and oddly enough, gambling websites lmao

But yeah, a LOT of healthcare, which is a vital service, so I guess we're alright

A Datacenter is what enables Lemmy to exist, so don’t feel bad. I guarantee most instances are hosted on VPS or Cloud providers which run in…. Datacenter’s. Not everyone can afford a fat pipe with a public IP at home.

[-] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago

You could always sabotage it

[-] Denvil@lemmy.ml 6 points 5 months ago

I like not going to jail thank you

[-] FatVegan@leminal.space 5 points 5 months ago

It's more like a side quest if you think about it

[-] prole 2 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

If you do it right, you'd maybe be fired if caught. Maybe.

You don't need to directly sabotage equipment in the way you're probably thinking, but just working slow, pretending to be stupid, letting things break, etc. can be helpful

[-] Denvil@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Well, as mentioned in another comment, I like not being in jail

But also if I did you best bet I'm keeping that for myself

[-] Gonzako@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

Nah, I'm a great Terabyte laundered. I'd get that drive up and running squeaky clean on a Swedish nas with Noone the wiser

[-] Cattail@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago

Data centers are gonna lobby for mandatory sponge baths

[-] Rooster326@programming.dev 1 points 5 months ago

Who are they lobbying? Their own employees?

[-] Sineljora@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 months ago

If they externalize costs to the community, and property damage is “violence”, then these are WMDs. I’d make sure your affairs are in order while working at one.
