Fucking sucks. Literally just started building a computer for my husband. We already bought the case, motherboard, PSU, HD, liquid cooling kit and CPU... All that's left is GPU and RAM 😭 fuckin half way ass done computer now on the verge of never being built. At least it's pretty. purplePc

[-] Cort@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago

At least the AMD chips have an integrated GPU so with some ram you could have a basic computer.

[-] Xella@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

It's the RAM that's extremely expensive 😭

[-] Cort@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

True, but you can expand the ram, your board has enough slots. You're stuck with whatever video card you can afford until the next upgrade.

[-] djsaskdja@reddthat.com 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Number of slots is misleading with DDR5. When you need more RAM, you’re supposed to replace the entire kit instead of trying to expand. It’s also now recommended you only use 2 slots even if it has 4. When I found that out, I couldn’t believe how fucking stupid it is. Even RAM is enshittified in 2025.

[-] Xella@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

I wanted to punch someone when I first read this. What the hell is the point if you can't use all the slots. You also have to stagger them, there's no using the first 2. Fuckin bullshit

[-] djsaskdja@reddthat.com 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I think technically you CAN use all the slots, but ideally you shouldn’t. You’ll basically encounter slower speeds and/or stability issues if you try to push it too much. But yeah many people deserve punches for the boneheaded decisions made in regards to DDR5.

I don't have any RAM lol. I've been slowly buying these parts for a few months now. This is all completely new. On my purchase timeline I was supposed to buy RAM this week. 😹

[-] Cort@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Check eBay quick before all the reasonably priced ddr5 is snatched up.

Good luck! o7

Can confirm, I'm running 3x 4K monitors with Ryzen 9900X easily. I'm not into gaming, though.

[-] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

I'd try seeing if the second-hand market is still behind on the pricing.

[-] Psythik@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Wow I'm sorry, that sucks. Shit like this is why I don't purchase until I can afford the entire build. Time goes by faster than you think. It would suck to get stuck with a PC that's already obsolete before you get the funds together to finish it.

If I were you, I'd return everything while you still can, then set aside the money until you can afford the complete build. Luckily for you you just got started, so the return window for everything will still be open.

Consider this a lesson learned and good luck with your eventual build!

Great timing of two of my DDR4 RAM modules to die - I have never seen more errors in memtest+

Luckily they are still under warranty but the vendor simply gave a refund without any option to get a replacement...

When the bubble pops on ai, will there then be all those parts up for offer?

[-] PabloSexcrowbar@piefed.social 6 points 1 week ago

If it's anything like the crypto bubble from a couple years ago, then yeah. eBay should be flooded with used RAM and GPUs.

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 3 points 1 week ago

Crypto bubble?

checks price

Wut?

[-] PabloSexcrowbar@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago

There was one a while ago, back when mining on GPUs was still viable. I wanna say the GTX 1000 series was still in vogue at the time.

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 1 points 1 week ago

So you mean recession, not bubble

[-] PabloSexcrowbar@piefed.social 4 points 1 week ago

It crashed hard and it crashed fast after a prolonged period of unsustainable growth. Is that not a bubble?

[-] TheOakTree@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago

Regardless of what happened to crypto, it was certainly a crypto mining hardware bubble for anyone invested in that.

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Correct. It was not a bubble. It is a volitile system that will continue to crash and rise forever.

[-] Psythik@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Not too long ago BTC was hovering around $120K. The price has fallen quite a bit in recent weeks

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 1 points 1 week ago

Not too long ago bitcoin was hovering around $10K. The price has risen astronomically in recent years

[-] Psythik@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago
[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 1 points 1 week ago

Yep. It's not a bubble. It's just volatile. And increasing long-term

I got 64GB (kit of 2) ddr4 for 150€ In January, now it is almost 400€ or more. I thought of buying another kit of 64 later to max out my mobo to 128GB and now I'm totally kicking myself for not going for 128GB straight away. And last month it got announced they no longer will make ddr4 so I'm out of luck anyway now even if prices stabilize.

As for why I need that much ram, I'm a tab hoarder and like to run VMs

[-] BingBong@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago

A couple months ago I decides to buy another set of RAM to get up to 64 GB on a whim. So damn glad I decided to treat myself for once, no way I'd do it now.

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 5 points 1 week ago

Never thought I'd have to time the market to buy my next laptop, but here we are.

[-] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

In theory laptops and assembled PCs should lag behind the parts market, so there might still be time.

[-] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

You don't hate genAI enough!

[-] Starski@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago

Damn I am so happy I upgraded when I did, had the same computer for upwards of a decade before finally upgrading a couple years ago, got my 7900xt with 20gb vram for like 650 and it doubled in price over a couple months(it's back down now but whatevs), 32gb ddr5 ram for like nothing compared to these current prices lmao, I should hopefully be good for another decade

[-] focusturtle@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 1 week ago

Memory prices have jumped a lot recently. Anecdotally, I bought some RAM off a website almost exactly half a year ago. Back then the price was 14 euro, now it is 41 euro, and the product I bought is still the cheapest for 8GB SO-DIMM 3.2GHz on the website.

Granted, there are two other possible reasons:

  1. It could have been a good offer back then.
  2. It is black friday tomorrow, so they might need a high price now to put it on "sale" tomorrow.
