It's literally this fucking meme every time.

People get told over and over to vote Democrat to prevent fascism, and when the fascists end up elected, the Democrats just fucking collaborate with them anyways. No wonder they're scared of Mamdani.

USA is a single split personality party state

The illusion of choice is proudly sponsored by the New American Ruling Class.

One like they imagine themselves to be and one for how they really are

It's giving Smeagol/Gollum

By now I think you should vote 3rd party. No, the dems aren't as bad as the fascists, but they won't save you from them either.

[-] scottrepreneur@lemmy.world 18 points 3 weeks ago

Absolutely. We need ranked choice voting to prevent spoiler effect. NYC used it well!

It's Italian fascits vs. German fascists.

Nazi collaborators aren't remembered fondly either.

My assumption was that the Republicans weren't going to shift

a lot of the money they got for tax breaks for the wealthy came from pillaging Medicaid. They can't really back out and do their tax policy. I also didn't think that the Democrats were going to just block the budget until Trump leaves office.

So I think that if what you were hoping for was all the healthcare coming back, that probably wasn't going to be in the cards. I commented on roughly that earlier, that what I expected was one of the Republicans using the nuclear option (change the Senate rules to permit passing the budget without a supermajority), or the Democrats ending the shutdown without at least a full change on Medicaid.

The Democrats don't really have much by way of levers to pull, because the Republicans hold a trifecta. This is one of the few things that they can do, and it's a pretty weak lever.

So it really came down to a political play based on what will win more public support for the midterms. Will people shift Republican or Democratic? The Republicans will try to get people upset at the Democrats, to shift Republican. The Democrats will try to get people to shift Democratic. If the Democrats gain control of the House in the midterms, then they gain a substantial amount of leverage.

Will they do anything with it in this hypothetical? They had the trifecta for a brief time didn’t they? And didn’t really do anything substantial with it….

[-] tal@lemmy.today 3 points 3 weeks ago

this hypothetical

What, like, restore Medicaid funding? I mean, sure, I expect so. They were the ones who set up the funding in the first place.

did the dems cave already?

[-] Mycatiskai@lemmy.ca 17 points 3 weeks ago

They had a meeting on Thursday to discuss caving, not even two full days after landslide victories all over your country.

Weak sauce politicians need to be replaced with progressives that are unbought and unchained from towing the status quo line.

I'm Canadian... but have to keep an eye on the dumpster fire the neighbours keep trying to put out with kerosene

[-] Mycatiskai@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 weeks ago

As am I, that's why I say "your country" because I am honest about not having a dog in this fight no matter how much it affects our country.

The problem with dumpster fires is that some idiots on our side of the border think they can get ahead if they light our dumpsters on fire too.

Am I pissed?

Yes.

Are people going to get their SNAP so they can eat and will federal employees start getting paid again and will we avoid a catastrophic holiday travel season and can we shut the government down again in a few months if Republicans don't honor their word, which they won't?

Yes.

This only keeps the government open a while longer. If they fuck around again, they can find out again.

I'd like to think this is a strategy on the Dem's part to show the country that the Republican party is willing to repeatedly shut down the government and hurt Americans instead of coming to the table and negotiating and that the Dems want to make sure people don't starve. I doubt that's it and it's most likely just cowards within the party caving to corporate interests.

Primary them.

I doubt that’s it and it’s most likely just cowards within the party caving to corporate interests.

I also want to point out that no honorable person goes into politics (at least not the high levels where they could have high impact) because a lot of people like you always shit on them whatever they do anyways. There's no recognition, there's no thanks from the population, you're always constantly fighting and attacked even by those that you are supposed to care about. Why would any sane person go through this?

I'm asking you to reflect on what you're saying and whether it really helps us get better people into government.

[-] ysjet@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago

Recognition and thanks for what, though?

Do you want me to congratulate them for not shitting themselves, too? I'll congratulate and thank them when they start actually representing me, instead of capitulating without gaining a single thing at all.

yeah this time it's actually a bad example since they did semi-fuck up. but i've been thinking that thought in general.

[-] djsoren19 5 points 3 weeks ago

If a person is going into politics because they crave fame and recognition, they're a shitty politician and we shouldn't reward that kinda behavior. They certainly aren't honorable.

The people who should go into politics are people with firm principles who have something they believe in, and are willing to potentially take flack in order to achieve those goals. Unfortunately, that mostly describes the Republican party, and their principles suck, but it also describes Zohran Mamdani who should be the new model of Dem.

They did this to head off a left reaction. That is all.
