Trump appeared to concede Wednesday that he's not allowed to run for reelection in 2028 — after teasing the idea of running for a third term on and off for months.

The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1951, explicitly bars anyone from being elected to more than two terms as president.

Mr. Trump has periodically toyed with the idea of seeking another term. In some cases, he's seemed to bring up the idea in a tongue-in-cheek manner, offering up "Trump 2028" hats to friends and foes alike. But he told NBC News earlier this year he's "not joking" and he believes "there are methods" by which he could run for president again. And Trump ally Steve Bannon said in an interview released last week that "there's a plan" for Mr. Trump to win a third term.

What's too bad is that he hasn't choked to death on daddy putin's cock yet despite numerous attempts.

[-] First_Thunder@lemmy.zip 14 points 1 week ago

Kinda hard to choke on something the size of a paper clip

We almost lost W to a pretzel. It can happen.

I think the author has misunderstood what the phrase “it’s too bad” means when Trump says it.

“It’s too bad it isn’t me who owns that building” always meant he was going to do whatever it took to own the building, for example. It’s how he expresses his desire to have something at any cost.

My little sister used to say "too bad I can't" as a way of asking permission

[-] frezik 5 points 1 week ago

The author heard a mob guy say "nice news outlet you have, shame if something happened to it" and took it as literal concern.

[-] rayyy@piefed.social 26 points 1 week ago

He won't make it through this term, maybe not even a year from now. His mental and physical health are deteriorating really fast.

[-] Hellotypewriter@retrolemmy.com 24 points 1 week ago

Don’t give me hope.

Vance might be worse then Trump...

[-] officermike@lemmy.world 30 points 1 week ago

On the one hand, Vance lacks the cult appeal, so should lose a fair election in 2028. On the other hand, we might not have a fair election in 2028.

[-] frezik 1 points 1 week ago

There needs to be a certain level of backing to subvert a whole election like that. Vance doesn't have it.

I do think it's hard to say if Trump will make it to the next election or not. I don't think he'll make it a decade, but even with obvious mental decline, he might make it to 2028.

[-] GlitchyDigiBun@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

Vance doesn't have nearly the amount of support or trust he needs. He's sucked Trumps coat tails for far too long and every failing of this admin is being reflected onto him as much as Mango Mussolini.

[-] Xaphanos@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

It's not about support. It's about the folks pulling the strings. If the architects and funders of project 2025 think that Vance (or Cruz, or MTG) is the puppet they want, then that's what we'll get.

[-] frezik 3 points 1 week ago

No, that's not how it works at all.

MAGA is a cult of personality. All the folks "pulling strings" have to keep them together. They can't. They aren't the personality at the center of the cult. There are already significant fractures in MAGA, and without Trump being a focus point, they tear each other apart.

Real support matters. People "pulling strings" aren't magical.

At this point it's a crapshoot.

[-] aseriesoftubes@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

I have two bottles of champagne ready to go. 🍾

[-] TheThrillOfTime@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 week ago

I kinda want him to run again just to unite everyone against this system. Something needs to make the revolution happen.

[-] Sibshops@lemmy.myserv.one 8 points 1 week ago

This is kind of the reason why I don't want Trump to be assassinated, too. If we don't learn from our mistakes, we are doomed to repeat them.

[-] GladiusB@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

An assassination will just make him a martyr and harder to turn the tide back.

[-] MrVilliam@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago

I'm not certain that he would lose, especially with the ratfuckery that will definitely happen. They're already talking about putting ICE agents at ballot boxes, and ICE has already been caught kidnapping and attacking US citizens, so idk how this would be legitimately understood to be anything but voter intimidation.

Even in 2020, Biden barely beat him despite the spiraling economy and cataclysmic pandemic under trump. I know Biden wasn't exactly the most exciting candidate, but being able to vote by mail was a major advantage to raise voter turnout and avoid intimidation attempts.

[-] frezik 1 points 1 week ago

5 points isn't a particularly close Presidential election. Trump won by 1.5 points in 2024, and -1.1 in 2016 (funny how that works).

What we've generally seen since the 2000 election is that when Republicans win, they do so by thin of margins (Bush 2004 was by 2.4 points). Twice during that period they won on negative margins.

This man loves the US so much. That is why he is the son of an illegal. Married an illegal. And has no respect for the constitution or the laws of the US. It’s just love. Y’all don’t get it.

[-] Hellotypewriter@retrolemmy.com 4 points 1 week ago

He doesn’t even understand the basics of the Constitution.

[-] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago

No, it's a hint to his toadies to try harder.

[-] Asafum@feddit.nl 3 points 1 week ago

"it's too bad I can't run for a third term (I make a lot of money running) but it's ok, I just won't ever end my second term!"
