Why is this even on the table... oh yeah:

the hastily agreed trade deal with the US

Fucking $deity I can't believe so many politicians a) play Trump's obvious game and b) still cling to the "USA our friend & ally" narratvie of decades past.

“with respect to automobiles, the United States and the European Union intend to accept and provide mutual recognition to each other’s standards.” Yet, EU vehicle safety regulations have supported a 36% reduction in European road deaths since 2010. By contrast, road deaths in the US over the same period increased 30%, with pedestrian deaths up 80% and cyclist deaths up 50%.

No shit. For once I hope the word "intend" is as empty as it sounds. I don't see the US delivering on that anyhow.

Is there a petition we can sign?

the hastily agreed trade deal with the US

I still have so many questions;

  • is there actually a tradedeal and who can supervise it? won't be WTO afaik..

  • according to US law this ( maybe all) recent tradedeals are unconstitutional, as they never passed Congress.

  • whatever deal there is, will still need ratification by EP and memberstates.

When you accept and reframe the situation from the POV that the EU is an American vassal, everything will click into place.

God forbid we align closer with China and create a Eurasian pole of power /s

[-] HowRu68@lemmy.world 24 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah let's change our dependencies to another/s

[-] despite_velasquez@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

The EU should be humble for once and learn how to do manufacturing from the Chinese.

Ignoring China as a world player is naive

[-] HowRu68@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

Are we living in the same continent? I mean if you're Chinese I get where you are coming from. But your name suggest a Spanish connection. Are more people apart from your curent PM Sanchez, really falling for all that CPC propaganda?

[-] despite_velasquez@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

The name is literally a generated Docker container name, anyways, I’m European.

What propaganda? That China is by all means, the world’s largest manufacturer, and pushing the envelope in terms of Military Industrial innovations, STEM graduates per capita, etc?

I go to China for work regularly, besides people looking to model France’s ability to get people to fall in love with its brands, no one there cares about the EU, because they see it as worthless and stuck.

[-] HowRu68@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago

Good for you. The grass is greener and all that. I prefer Euro grass.

[-] despite_velasquez@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

I live in Europe, I also prefer Euro grass. I just want us to stop thinking we’re the shit, when we’re actually shit and no one cares about the EU because nothing worthwhile comes from this continent atm

[-] HowRu68@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

Ok.. uhm. But the article was about the dangers of EU- US tradedeal, and the dangers for cyclists with importing US vehicles without any protection for cyclists and pedestrians ?

I don't know who thinks Europe is the shit, like you said . But I also don't think that we are actually shit.

I do believe Europe is being extremely pressured by the East & West and we're just barely protecting our way of life atm.. Also Europe as a whole is still a very new project, srill ways to go and learn too.

[-] despite_velasquez@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

It has a lot to do with the article, because of our superiority complex and literally EU politicians saying “we don’t need China, China needs us more than we need them”.

Dealing with China would’ve been a good counterbalance against being screwed over by the US tariff wise.

However, now we have to open up our markets to American cars and ractopamine pork from the US (yes, the deal also includes deregulating EU food safety standards).

Our gloating is literally destroying our standards of life

[-] khannie@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Would you ever jog on. I'd bet cold, hard cash that you haven't been to both places.

I have and I can tell you that even under the current administration, we are ideologically far closer to one than the other when you talk with actual humans.

[-] despite_velasquez@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

We can be as ideologically similar, policy-wise, we’re an obedient dog with a masochism kink.

“Yes daddy Trump, we’ll take all your child killer gas guzzlers and destroy our urban planning for more car friendly cities. What’s that? Yes sure we’ll also take a 15% tariff, and we’ll do it with a smile”

[-] khannie@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

Can't disagree with that in fairness.

[-] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 weeks ago

I disagree with your use of $diety, as it's not inclusive. It should be an array, not a scalar.

[-] pupbiru@aussie.zone 9 points 2 weeks ago

it could very well be an array

[-] Lifter@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 2 weeks ago

Dear [Jahve, Buddha, Thor] I can't believe so many politicians...

[-] Slotos@feddit.nl 7 points 2 weeks ago

Sir, this is sh.

[-] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

To each their own, so not an array 🤷

[-] PrimeMinisterKeyes@leminal.space 1 points 2 weeks ago

What about polytheists then?

[-] lordbritishbusiness@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, we need JSON at least to support all options. Or possibly some form of quantum object.

[-] Rooster326@programming.dev 2 points 2 weeks ago

The only shocking part of your data is that we still have pedestrians

[-] subOrange@lemmy.world 65 points 2 weeks ago

If I start seeing these cars around here I’ll start carrying a knife with me and puncturing some tires until their owners get the message.

[-] turdas@suppo.fi 43 points 2 weeks ago

Green lentils. Open the valve cap, put one in, and screw it back on. If you don't screw it too tight the tyre will deflate slowly and by the time anyone notices it's empty, you'll be long gone.

Also, deflating tyres without damaging them actually might not be illegal in many jurisdictions. In Finland a court ruled that deflating bicycle tyres is not illegal -- the only thing it could fall under was vandalism, but it doesn't cause any damage so it couldn't be vandalism.

[-] subOrange@lemmy.world 17 points 2 weeks ago
[-] turdas@suppo.fi 4 points 2 weeks ago

I would, but that's really all there is to it. They have to be uncooked lentils of course, and you may want to wear a disguise and do it at night.

[-] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 21 points 2 weeks ago

Godspeed. Pack a mask for the inbuilt surveillance cameras.

[-] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

hero of the people

[-] popcornpizza 43 points 2 weeks ago

Where would those monstrosities even go? Aren't the streets of most European countries too narrow for them? Or will they then decide to get rid of all the historical structure to fit some gigantic vehicles that won't even last that long?

[-] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 41 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Kinda. We definitely don't have the parking space for them. But I'm already seeing stupid US pickups (e.g. Dodge Ram) on our streets, their owners just don't care.

Also, a lot of places in Europe don't have much left of their historical structures anyway. There was a great war, and then they bulldozed some more in the 50s to build car infrastructure.

[-] popcornpizza 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I mean, I've seen plenty of narrow streets from walkers in Italy, Spain, and such, with non-modern architecture. I don't mean just museum-grade historical, just normal houses and apartments with a more "classic" look.

Edited to add: Needless to say, destroying all of that will make housing even more expensive in the bigger cities. All for a handful of people's ego trips.

[-] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Europe is a big place and in particular Italy is the place to see hundreds of years old narrow streets, and Spain is kind of famous (in certain circles) for heavily concentrating their urban centers despite having a lot of space compared to many other western european countries. You need to have actually had a lot of cities in the time periods where narrow streets were normal, many other countries were very rural until the 19th or even 20th century.

If you want to see European cities with lots of car-friendly infrastructure, look at places that were extensively bombed in WW2, like Germany, England or Belgium, or ones that weren't that urbanized until the 20th century like most countries east of Germany.

[-] DandomRude@lemmy.world 21 points 2 weeks ago

Yes, that's the thing: driving around in such a ridiculous car in the US is stupid enough, but in Europe it's even more so.

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 weeks ago

EU should require a truck class licence, as should NA.

[-] cheeseburger@piefed.ca 29 points 2 weeks ago

Come on, Euros, don't fall for American bullshit. Do something about your own shitty leaders who are leading you down the garden path.

[-] ghosthacked@lemmy.wtf 4 points 2 weeks ago

Brits are hard-on to ape the American model whilst having a fraction of the economic & military power. Americans can act like morons because at the end of the day they have a 30 trillion dollar strong economy and the world's most powerful military.

Let's see how little Britain fares on the America lite model.
