Gov. Gavin Newsom said Thursday that California will begin selling affordable insulin under its own label on Jan. 1, nearly three years after he first announced a partnership to sell state-branded generic drugs at lower prices.

But California won’t be the only state making lower-cost insulin available. The nonprofit Civica said it will also distribute its economical diabetes medication to pharmacies nationwide. California began partnering with Civica in 2023 for its “CalRx” brand of insulin and put $50 million toward its development, the company said.

Starting in the new year, insulin pens will be available at a recommended price of $11 per pen, or a maximum of $55 for a five-pack, Civica said.

Wait, you're telling me they are providing cheaper prescriptions, and no one in the governor's family is profiting off it, and his name isn't attached to the company? How could this be.

Doing something good for your constituents has to be one of the lowest bars for a politician, and yet we have to celebrate it, because the bare fucking minimum is still too hard for most of them

[-] Sciaphobia@sh.itjust.works 8 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

It's part of Newsom's presidential campaign.

[-] Azal@pawb.social 5 points 4 days ago

I mean... that's a good fucking sell still.

I don't have any illusions he doesn't want to get higher up. I don't have any illusions that he'd motorboat a few billionaires to get richer. But right now any step in the right direction is a far better situation than we're in right now.

[-] Sciaphobia@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago

Agreed. I won't complain about a good thing being done. I was just speaking to what I believe the "why" behind it was, given the person I replied to was, facetiously I'm guessing, expressing incredulity that Newsom was doing something that doesn't immediately line his pockets.

[-] maxxadrenaline@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago

He… has to be making money off this… somehow. Drugs for the people? Is he EVEN a POLITICIAN??!?

[-] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 2 points 4 days ago

He'll make the money in presidential campaign donations, I'm sure he'll find a way to profit. He's better than the Trump crowd for sure, but he's no leftist.

[-] BadmanDan@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Not a leftist? Does that mean he actually knows how to balance the budget and be pragmatic to achieve progress?

Sign me up!

[-] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 3 points 3 days ago

He'll also continue to prioritize corporations over humans because they're people too and they're richer people. Is what I mean by not a leftist.

[-] BadmanDan@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Dammit, we were so close. He’s another sellout? Where are the progressive, yet pragmatic liberals at?

[-] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 21 points 4 days ago

It's sad that this is newsworthy, but I'm damn glad SOMEBODY is doing the right thing

[-] Placebonickname@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

someone is doing SOMETHING, as opposed to our Federal Gov which is going nowhere fast.

[-] TheCriticalMember@aussie.zone 9 points 4 days ago

The federal government going nowhere would be the absolute best case scenario right about now, but the reality is far worse.

[-] BadmanDan@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Idk why but I read this as “Federal Governor”, lol. What if the president was called Federal Governor

[-] ch00f@lemmy.world 20 points 4 days ago

Can you imagine going broke paying for a life-saving drug knowing that elsewhere in your country, the law dictates that people can get it for cheap?

[-] dmention7@midwest.social 20 points 4 days ago

Type 1 diabetic here. With my insurance I pay $40 for a 90-day supply of two different types of insulin. I literally feel nauseous when I see the "retail" price printed on the receipts edging on $1000.

I know that number is mostly there to make me feel good about the "generous" insurance company, but at the same time the mail order pharmacy I use flubbed up one time and billed my CC for that amount, so that retail price is real in some sense. I fought them on it, but ultimately it was easier just to pay and hit my deductible sooner. I realize I'm damn fortunate to be in a situation where an unexpected $1k bill is just an inconvenience.

I'm not sure what my point is, but this system where commodity drugs are priced at exorbitant prices, and made affordable only by paying a middleman, is insane. Clearly drugs like insulin can be made and sold at a reasonable price, and if it takes a government body to step in and treat critical drugs as a public service rather than a profit-maker, then fuck it let's roll with that!

[-] Caffeinated_Sloth@lemmy.world 17 points 4 days ago

I’m poor in the USA with a T1D kid. I would really like to go full time in my own business so I can pull my family out of poverty, but it’s the insulin/insurance that holds me back. I don’t want to jump onto ACA insurance when it’s absolutely in the crosshairs of the GOP. Seeing stories like this gives me hope.

[-] dmention7@midwest.social 12 points 4 days ago

Situations like yours are the other half of why this is all so maddening. Health insurance used to be a job perk, but now its being used as a noose to keep people tied to their job or risk not being able to afford healthcare for their family.

The ACA was a small, and wholly inadequate, step to fixing that, but at least a step. Fuck the GOP for trying to take even that away. It seems like even the reddest MAGA should be able to appreciate and encourage what you are trying to do.

[-] phdeeznuts@mander.xyz 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Can you imagine going broke paying for a life-saving drug knowing that elsewhere in your planet, the law dictates that people can get it for free?

[-] ch00f@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

I mean the difference here is that you can there's no immigration paperwork necessary to move states. You just drive/bus/walk.

[-] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago

Lefties, your hate for Newsom needs to result in something because if things continue like this he's less than three years away from being the candidate.

Unfortunately I think it's just going to result in bitching about him non-stop and then refusing to vote again.

[-] Lemmynated@lemmy.zip 11 points 4 days ago

Sounds like maybe Newsom better do something to earn some leftist votes or is it going to result in more liberal bitching non-stop that everyone didn’t drop every moral and fall in line behind a transphobe fuck?

Deliberately antagonizes lefties

Lefties get antagonized

You: See they never agree with us!

[-] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

It’ll never change. They’ll never see the value in uniting to defeat republiQans. They won’t even vote! Because . . hangon . . *checks notes* . . Oh! Right. Hilary. duh.

Can’t be this guy, he hates trans people. Can’t be that woman, she loves Jews. Can’t be arsed to put forth our own candidate because . . Uh . . the system is rigged. Progress is a lie. Property is theft.

I think Democratic consultants have destroyed so much for so little, but it’s no wonder they keep shaking the rust belt for votes when they see the numbers.

[-] phdeeznuts@mander.xyz 9 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Can’t be this guy, he hates trans people. Can’t be that woman, she loves Jews.

"How dare the left fight for trans peoples right to live, and also people who dislike Israel are actually antisemitic"

That's a disgusting sentiment.

If they want us to vote for them, they can put forward a candidate we want.

It's actually really easy to find people who aren't disgusting people, I'm sure most users here and most people they're friends with would fail into such a category as do millions and millions of others. They're the ones with the money to get voters interested in a candidate and promote them on a national/international level with ease, so why don't they choose a candidate people actually want?

[-] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

You prefer another candidate, an electable candidate? Then name the person!

. . . I grow tired of asking this; so it’ll be the last time. Who. Is the left’s preferred candidate for President?

(That’s paraphrasing a movie quote for anyone who didn’t know that.)

[-] phdeeznuts@mander.xyz 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Stop this with personal blaming fallacy. The burden of presenting an electable candidate is on the DNC.

They are the ones with the money, time, and resources to do so not the poor overworked exhausted citizens who are lucky to get time off to vote every 4 years.

[-] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Oh yeah, sure - I hate the DNC and everything they stand for, I deem their candidates to be transphobic child murdering Zionists but I'm busy with my job so they double suck the end.

Your commitment to excellent governance is nonexistent. Is it any wonder you're always dissatisfied with no solutions? This is exactly what I expect from "the left" around here. Nothing but self-important screeching and a refusal to stop republiQans. A refusal to stop fascism. As if that was the entire goal.

[-] xyzzy@lemmy.today 8 points 4 days ago

I mean, shit, I'm a leftist but he can buy my vote with more progressive policies like this. I'm OK with that.

[-] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Oh crap! Duck, they’ll see you! You’ll be outed as a trans-hating, genocide-loving Zionist who has no morals! They’ll know you . . . shit hangon, I keep forget- ah - They’ll know you lick boots and love fascists!!!

[-] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 days ago

I really want the Democrats to win, and those leftists seem like a significant percentage of voters. So I'll vote to nominate someone far left who gets their votes in the general, not the moderates who voted for Trump anyways. The primary is in the future so we can still obtain this huge number of leftist votes.

I wish they would just vote Democratic anyways. They're close enough to my beliefs that I expect their support. But I already know how they will behave as a large group, and can only change my own votes.

[-] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

That, at least, is a plan of action. And, one of the benefits is you'll finally cut loose the vast majority of "middle" America that doesn't live near any people who look or act different from them.

We'll think of it as a rebuilding cycle in the crush of literal no-shit fascism. I mean, there are worse ideas being bandied about here.

[-] xyzzy@lemmy.today 10 points 5 days ago
[-] FranklyIGiveADarn@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 days ago

It's a good start, but we need to hound them for more.

[-] sbbq@lemmy.zip 5 points 4 days ago

But why should anyone ever provide a good or service for any reason other than massive profit?! This should be illegal! COMMUNIST SCUM

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

I love this.
