“When you’re using these tactics, you are asking people to be hospitalized,” said Oscar Sanchez, a member of a rapid response network that tracks immigration enforcement activity. He said he saw an agent hit a teenage girl in the head with a tear gas canister. “You see elderly folks on the [ground], so you just ask yourself, what is this for? Why is the aggression needed? Why are these elevated tactics even being used?

This is disgusting. This isn't law enforcement, this is legalized abuse.

What is the "BTC" in the soldier to the right? Please tell me it's not bitcoin

His vest has "BORTAC" under "POLICE", so could be an abbreviation of it or something else entirely.

It's Border Patrol's gravy seal team. Not sure if it's BORder patrol TACtical element or what but that's definitely who those dudes are.

Well that protester looks like he's casting fireball that poor ice agent had to respond lol

Please read the image description:

A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent points a crowd control weapon at a protester Tuesday

It's not a real gun with live ammunition as the post title subtly implies.

"Non-lethal" weapons to the face are still not good, but police and ICE have been doing this for a while. It's not new.

Those weapons are not non-lethal, less lethal.

[-] Ascrod@midwest.social 2 points 1 week ago

Same thing.

The gun shoots stuff that can kill, especially at that range. Shut up.

[-] Ascrod@midwest.social 2 points 1 week ago

I'm well aware of that.

The point is that this title is bait. ICE has been pointing (and shooting) at peoples' faces all year with rubber bullets, tear gas, and other crowd control weapons. This title makes it sound as if they're waving live rounds around in this picture.

If that distinction doesn't matter to you, then you are free to happily go about your day without giving it a second thought.

[-] Bane_Killgrind@lemmy.dbzer0.com 23 points 1 week ago

That's a stupid distinction because either will kill at that distance aimed where they are.

[-] Ascrod@midwest.social 2 points 1 week ago

Right, but ICE has been doing this for a while. It's bad, but it's not new. As far as I'm aware, ICE hasn't brandished or used live rounds in close quarters (as in this picture) yet.

I think the distinction is important because if ICE starts using live rounds on protesters, people are going to start retaliating with live rounds. Then we're in full-on mask-off civil war territory, no more pretending. Blurring that distinction is playing with fire, IMO.

Dude police shoot people all the time.

They treat a gun shaped item as a gun, with live ammunition all the time.

"As far as you are aware" is worth nothing.

I'll remember that when my life flashes before my eyes when somebody shoves this in my face.
