Started a DeAR 22 build that I'm quite excited about for my 15-22 so far really impressed with the design.

one thing that it did make me think though is anyone has ever tried using a motor like a stepper motor instead of a spring? I kinda imagined a small stepper motor powered by a 18650 cell controlled by a tiny arduino or something might give fully customizable tension - has anyone done anything like this?

You mean the complete operation with a motor and linear drive?

There is only the slight problem that this locking system has to bear the whole forces from the shot, becaues with a spring you can use the inertia of the bolt to lock the system. Here the system is locked over the mechanism you intend.

Not really sure, I was thinking more on a direct drive basis. The motor could rotate the drum feeding in a new round under the control of a microcontroller could and tension etc. just thinking outloud really
