1/2 open-source 1/2 hp spare parts

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 8 points 1 month ago

If the parts are easily obtainable off the shelf, then the project is still open source.

Bigger issue is that this is licensed NC, so distributive enterprise collaboration is not possible

Thanks. worth mentioning that 100% of the projects listed on crowd supply over the past decades that fund have shipped to backers

Whereas there's lots of scams on kickstsrter and indigogo, CS is a very trustworthy platform

Wow. Funded on 2016. Last update about testing on 2020. Nothing since (in 2025).

What the hell happened? And what did crowd supply do about it? Did they make any reimbursement to the backers? Or, at least, issue an apology?

[-] spoonbill@programming.dev 3 points 1 week ago

Overambitious solo developer + health issues.

No reimbursments or apologies.

27 mm-wide paper roll

That’s a small roll of paper.

I also wondered where they left the other 10". They probably have dropped a '9', so it should read 297 mm wide paper roll to be compatible to A4/A3 paper.

Looks very very cool but I don't want to deal with an inkjet printer ever again.

[-] Chee_Koala@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

Same, is there any real reason they should exist? isn't laser just better ?? If i have to ' repair ' my printer every 14-55 prints, is it really a printer or just a really frustrating puzzle game?

[-] CatsPajamas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 month ago

Aren't laser printers super toxic?

[-] dynamoMaus@feddit.org 4 points 1 month ago

The results can be summarized as follows: Laser printers are one of many sources of indoor air pollution. They do not pose a specific health risk.

Sadly it's all german, but here are the sources: https://www.bundesumweltministerium.de/themen/gesundheit/innenraumluft/emissionen-aus-laserdruckern

[-] comrade_twisty@feddit.org 7 points 1 month ago

Nice project, I guess a roll of paper is actually more expensive than regular sheets though.

[-] Vittelius@feddit.org 13 points 1 month ago

You can also use A3 and A4 sheets

[-] cron@feddit.org 2 points 1 month ago

Still sounds like a great niche product, if you can make use of the larger page size.

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Its a foundation MVP. If it's licensed openly, anyone can take this and add more complex moving part components, like paper trays.

Edit: nope. License is NC. So this project is dead before it even started. Such a fucking waste.

[-] happydoors@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Is there an open source laser printer? Even if black and white that’d be sweet.

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 4 points 1 month ago

Cool project

Open Printer

Terrible name.

[-] Leeks@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

I wonder if this can be expanded into an “open plotter”.

[-] Xanthrax@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Does it have a place to install a hood over the paper roll? My cats would fuck that up.

[-] Vittelius@feddit.org 8 points 1 month ago

It's open hardware. So if it doesn't you could 3d print your own

[-] Oberyn@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Really love this design 🩶 Want

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 1 points 1 month ago

This is the only page I've ever printed with a FOSS printer.

And, god, I'm printing it on toilet paper.

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 1 points 1 month ago

Link to the build instructions and CAD files?

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 1 points 1 month ago
[-] B0rax@feddit.org 7 points 1 month ago

Because it is easy and cheap. You can buy inkjet cartridges which include the printhead. These are the hardest parts.

Now you „only“ need a motion system.

For a laser printer you need much more complex parts.

I guess if this project takes off they will start looking into Laser printers.

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 1 points 1 month ago

Open Printer will use the Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0

Lol wut?!?

So they're literally violating the terms of their own license by selling this on crowd supply!

[-] Matombo@feddit.org 4 points 1 month ago

No, the author always has all rights to the creation. The license is always about how all non-authors are allowed to use the work.

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 1 points 1 month ago

Ok, so this author just thinks they're more important then the rest of the community? Asshole.

[-] Matombo@feddit.org 3 points 1 month ago

That surely was his intention /s 🤦
