Another week in the bag! Well done all. Today's game is simple... summarise a tv show in one sentence and other people guess it. Have fun!

Group of people live in implausibly large apartments in NYC and hang out in a coffee shop

A family living in Queens argues all the time as the patriarch of the household tries to rule with an iron fist but fails.

King of Queens? (Or better yet, Kevin Can F**k Himself?)

[-] ZDL@lazysoci.al 3 points 2 weeks ago

I've never watched that one, so … no?

Tell me about the show, though. Sounds interesting.

Haha fair enough, it felt like it could have been a dark twist.

Kevin Can Go F**k Himself is really interesting though, and I definitely recommend it. In many ways a dark satire and criticism of King of Queens specifically, but also all of those "goofy" sitcoms with a lead who's an incompetent funny guy.

I don't want to reveal too much though because I think it's best to experience it without prep, but please be warned it can be jarring.

Do you need to know King of Queens before watching the other one?

If you're passingly familiar with the tropes present in any husband-and-wife sitcom and enjoy dark comedies, I think you'll appreciate the genre deconstruction without any confusion.

That being said, the show bears a strong resemblance to King of Queens, its spiritual successor Kevin Can Wait, and to a lesser extent Roseanne, containing a handful of references to those shows. Having watched all those made me enjoy this show even more.

Kevin Can F**k Himself* is like King of Queens meets Death Note and I love it.

spoilerBasically Carrie and Roseanne teaming up to become a crime duo is something I never knew I needed.

Shall I give the answer or does anybody else want to take a crack at this?

Hint: think old. Very old. Like me.

The people need to know! (And it's too early in the morning for me to guess now 😅)

[-] ZDL@lazysoci.al 3 points 2 weeks ago

Who am I to deny The People?

All in the Family.

Dang, that's a good one. The People are appeased!

[-] ZDL@lazysoci.al 3 points 2 weeks ago

It's one of the all-time greats. It carefully walked that line between social commentary and comedy and is one of the few shows that had a realistic home for the protagonists. Sort of the anti-Friends in that regard.

Honeymooners?

[-] MystValkyrie 5 points 2 weeks ago

It's it somehow...

Tap for spoilerSolar Opposites??

[-] MystValkyrie 3 points 2 weeks ago

No, but I like that answer! Mine is way dumber 😅

But now I need to know what it is!

[-] MystValkyrie 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

It's Teletubbies lol. shudder

Omg amazing 😂

[-] juliebean@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 weeks ago

it's gotta be...Buffy the Vampire Slayer

[-] LadyButterfly@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 weeks ago

You got it!

[-] ZDL@lazysoci.al 4 points 2 weeks ago

A group of strangers are forced by shipwreck to live on an island with no modern amenities, using only their wits, and their dogged determination, to survive both the perils of the island (and its occasional visitors) and their own internal social stresses.

Omg, I haven't seen Gilligan's Island since I was a kid 😅

[-] ZDL@lazysoci.al 3 points 2 weeks ago

Got it!

Gilligan's Island was, in fact, the show. The fact that the description matches Lost is just endless entertainment for me.

[-] ZDL@lazysoci.al 2 points 2 weeks ago

As a side note, you can sing "Amazing Grace" to the tune of Gilligan's Island and vice versa. You can also sing Dickinson's "Because I would not stop for Death" to both tunes.

Now that you know this you will never be able to unhear this.

You're welcome.

[-] ZDL@lazysoci.al 2 points 2 weeks ago

No, but I carefully worded it so that people would think of Lost. 🤭

two brothers live in a treehouse and go on whimsical adventures in a distant magical future.

[-] LadyButterfly@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 weeks ago

I am completely stuck on this one

[-] juliebean@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 weeks ago

hintit's an animated show, and one of the brothers is a dog

[-] MystValkyrie 4 points 2 weeks ago

Oh, is it Adventure Time? I always forget about Jake and Finn being brothers.

[-] juliebean@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 weeks ago

you nailed it!

[-] LadyButterfly@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 weeks ago

Ah still no clue...

[-] DaniNatrix@leminal.space 3 points 2 weeks ago

Group of rag tag bounty hunters fight their way across the galaxy in search of fortune to a kick ass soundtrack.

[-] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I'm hoping Cowboy Bebop. If not, Cowboy Bebop was an excellent show.

[-] DaniNatrix@leminal.space 2 points 2 weeks ago

Definitely Cowboy Bebop!

Women only trans inclusive This is an inclusive community for all things women. Whether you're here for make up tips, feminism or just friendly chit chat, we've got you covered.

Rules…

  1. Women only… trans women are women, and transphobic or gender critical talk isn’t allowed. Anyone under the trans umbrella (e.g. non-binary, bigender, agender) is free to decide whether a women's community is a good fit for them.
  2. Don’t be a dick. No personal attacks, no aggression, play nice.
  3. Don’t hate on groups, hatefilled talk about groups is not allowed. Ever.
  4. No governmental politics, so no talk of Trump actions etc. We recommend Feminism@beehaw.org for that, but here is an escape from it.
  5. New accounts or users with few comments may have their posts removed to prevent spam and bad-faith participation.
