That’s called stealing. And that book they claim to have read says that’s a no no.

Also your library will just buy more copies. Which means your taxes will go up to pay for the missing books.

Lolno. Libraries are getting funds cut. They will not buy a new copy, it will become unavailable, then those that would go to a library to borrow it no longer can, so they find it online, and the right can say "see? Nobody goes to libraries anyways".

Our libraries send an invoice to the people who have unpaid dues.

And they can’t loan anything before the dues have been paid.

Might even go to collections if you’re enough of an ass

Our libraries have mostly moved away from this model. I may have some details mixed up but I believe there was a study done that showed books were more likely to be returned without the late fee than with a fee.

Basically people will feel ashamed or embarrassed to return a book so late (or maybe in extreme cases cannot easily afford the couple dollars) so they end up stealing the book and never returning it. So now the library has to buy a $10 book because someone couldn't pay the $5 late fee. It just makes more sense in the long run to let people bring the book back late without penalty vs not bring it back at all in fear of a fee.

Late fees have largely been abandoned, yes. But lost book fees are still widely in use. They’ll just lock your account until you either return the book or pay for a replacement.

I wonder what would happen if a athiest group started removing religious books from that same library and publicizing it? We know these chumps wont be able to see any similarity between the two acts.

[-] Greddan@feddit.org 27 points 2 weeks ago

These are clinically insane people living in a fantasy world. So, no. They would screach and resort to violence as religious people always do.

[-] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 8 points 2 weeks ago

Can be just leave the books alone?

This isn't 451°F

[-] MehBlah@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I would be just as pissed if it was atheist doing something like this. That isn't likely. As annoying as a atheist can be in your life even if you are not religious they do tend to be critical thinkers.

press X for doubt

I think it boils down to the person and what society thinks is ok. Groupthink is rarely a positive.

Library: these books are so popular, better order more

[-] gex@lemmy.world 29 points 2 weeks ago

The library should just publish a list of cardholders that haven't returned their books

John doe: borrowed "Raising LGBTQ Allies: A Parent’s Guide to Changing the Messages from the Playground" 15 weeks ago

[-] lettruthout@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

So either John is a thief or he‘s REALLY into the subject.

I will hand my credit card number over to the charity that gives 5 new copies of a book to any library that has one stolen.

how long until they have a pot-luck / get rid of your un-read books bonfire

[-] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago

If you rely on religion for your morality, you can be convinced that anything is moral.

[-] PedroMaldonado@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

We could have gotten there. To that Future. But, no. Its superstition, fleas, and a darker world. Thanks for nothing, jerks.

As ways to block people from getting it out of the library, I prefer this to other methods. Remember, libraries are usually funded based on circulation numbers - so to the members of this church, I say please dive on the public library and borrow a lot of books and media, and make them have it get marked as delinquent and get written off so they can buy more stuff.

So, they're doing a great thing to the library!
