Labubus are still a thing? I thought that wave of idiocity had passed already?

[-] flamingo_pinyata@sopuli.xyz 62 points 2 weeks ago

Not just yet. Now that the knowledge of Labubus is mainstream they will go out of fashion soon. But there will be one last wave while normies pretend to be fashionable.

[-] noride@lemmy.zip 44 points 2 weeks ago

Honestly thought South Park made them up, I had never heard of them before that. It's beanie babies all over again.

I'll bet she doesn't have 500 copies of the same book with different colors of covers.

[-] wetbeardhairs@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 2 weeks ago

Collecting something can be a fun hobby. Buying collectibles is something a fucking idiot does.

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

i do have a few books i have a personal copy and a lending copy

[-] meekah@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Still a different thing than having 500 Stanley cups..

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

my dude i am on my sixth copy of Jasper Fforde's Shades of Grey because no one gives it back and honestly, i'm kind of cool with that it's my favorite book/series. we don't have that many stanleys, but FFS we get so many crappy nalgenes as swag at conventions i don't know what to do with them all. now i guess we have a "you had an earthquake and weren't paying attention" cupboard because

happens with all those shitty nalgenes.

[-] killeronthecorner@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Instead of owning many copies of Shades of Grey, you could buy one copy of 50 Shades of Grey. So wasteful smh my head

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

i only need ~~two~~ one [i swear i can math] more and then i have the full spectrum though

edit: ooo, now i kind of want to do that if i ever get my books back

[-] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

At one point I had three copies of Bryson's Short History. I think they're all on permanent loan at this point. Pretty happy with that

[-] fushuan 3 points 2 weeks ago

I have one of those because it's the only damn 2L metallic closeable bottle I could find to refill twice everyday.

I am a good benchmark for this stuff. If I know what Labubu is because I had to find it on Urban Dictionary then it has run its course.

The other canary is NPR. Anything on NPR is a dead meme.

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

i'm back into beanie babies.

[-] SSUPII@sopuli.xyz 9 points 2 weeks ago

They have made a very strong community.

[-] morphballganon@mtgzone.com 6 points 2 weeks ago

There are people who still like furbies.

[-] rustyricotta@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 2 weeks ago

I prefer long furbies

Tap for spoiler

[-] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 weeks ago

I want to see someone make a fully articulated one of these with custom software running on it so it writhes along with whatever furby stuff it's doing.

[-] morphballganon@mtgzone.com 2 points 2 weeks ago

Putting links in spoiler tags makes them much harder to click on mobile, fyi

I think the company lost like a quarter of its value recently

[-] Treczoks@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I wonder how many containers of those thingies are still shipping around the globe...

[-] 7toed@midwest.social 3 points 2 weeks ago

How many have fallen off their container ship and are mow adrift, waiting to be dug up from the seafloor in 200 years

[-] krunklom@lemmy.zip 29 points 2 weeks ago
[-] PonderousParrot@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Someone tried this with a box once.

[-] MeatPilot@lemmy.world 24 points 2 weeks ago

Just get a monchichi and look hip AND vintage

[-] Obi@sopuli.xyz 16 points 2 weeks ago

These things are so creepy.

[-] ChaoticNeutralCzech@feddit.org 2 points 2 weeks ago

So are Labubus but also kitchy.

[-] sexy_peach@feddit.org 18 points 2 weeks ago

I can afford a labubu. But why would I buy one

[-] simplejack@lemmy.world 19 points 2 weeks ago

Because the social safety net is broken and gambling on rare labubus is your retirement now.

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

wait they're just godsdamned beanie babies? AGAIN? does anyone have a spare labubu so i can put farts in its head

[-] Paradachshund@lemmy.today 18 points 2 weeks ago

Honestly cuter than actual labubu

[-] lugal@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 2 weeks ago

I just yesterday watched a video by Emma Thorn making fun of people who think these are demonic. Never heard of them before

[-] theneverfox@pawb.social 4 points 2 weeks ago

They are demonic. The business practices are pure evil... And the dolls themselves are unsettling, like a furbee or something, but that's neither here nor there

[-] TheEighthDoctor@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 weeks ago

Not all of them, only the rare one can be used in the demonic summoning ritual

[-] DaGeek247@fedia.io 7 points 2 weeks ago

The screenshot is bad enough that I can't tell if this is a troll where they took a picture of the back of one, or where they actually collected that much dog hair for a joke photo.

[-] clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago

It looks like a clear plastic case full of hair to me!

[-] Harvey656@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

So this is what makes reddit content these days.

[-] coffee_nutcase207@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

The working man's Labubu.

[-] BigDaddySlim@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

The first time I had ever heard about labubus was the last episode of South Park. I thought they were just some dumb thing Matt and Trey came up with to use as a vehicle to talk about the tariffs, then I learned they were actually real.

[-] MML@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

Same and the next day I see a pop up gazebo selling them, like how.

[-] bigboitricky@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

respect the hussle
