This is a serious thing in the autistic community, as in a very deadly one, character AI is an autistic suicidating machine, those shits should be just banned.

[-] Uri@infosec.pub 14 points 17 hours ago

No one should decide what you should do on the internet.

[-] WoodScientist@lemmy.world 17 points 11 hours ago

Dangerous and addictive technologies and substances are always regulated. There's a reason we don't let ten year olds buy vodka.

[-] syreus@lemmy.world 19 points 13 hours ago

Society requires regulation to reduce feedback loops. Everyone always assumes things can only be allowed or disallowed but there is a medium where the barriers to entry reduce the risk to bystanders while preserving liberty. See drivers licence, chemical aquisition background checks, etc.

[-] A_Chilean_Cyborg@feddit.cl 14 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

This thing is literally killing people, I'm full onboard on protecting privacy and personal freedom, but only up to the point of protecting vulnerable people first.

Character AI and similar are profiting of vulnerable people.

[-] floquant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 15 hours ago

Eh. I'm with you on the "nothing is illegal on the internet" stance, but at the same time I think it's ok to fight against "bad"/dangerous things and make them harder to access. If someone really wants to have an AI lover, let them download a model and write their own system prompt. At least then they would have a better idea of what their "lover" actually is.

[-] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 7 points 14 hours ago

pfft, ah yes sam altman's sycophant machine should be allowed, nay, encouraged to prey upon the mentally unstable! why, it's doing us a service, driving these people from a fragile state to outright mental collapse in record time!

Is this why I can't stand AI? Because it reflects back my unrepentant asshole tendencies? Fucken A I am immune to thine silicone deception for I wield the great and mighty trauma!

[-] Tyrq@lemmy.dbzer0.com 67 points 1 day ago

That particular allegory didn't quite click until now, certainly that is become much clearer that it will just tell you what you want to hear, not necessarily anything true

[-] MarriedCavelady50@lemmy.ml 33 points 1 day ago

Makes me think we must of missed out on news stories of people wanting to fuck clippy

[-] jj4211@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Probably why when Microsoft wanted to take another go at a "smart assistant", they went with Cortana...

[-] user224@lemmy.sdf.org 31 points 1 day ago

Just tried searching "clippy rule 34". Plenty of results.

Better or worse than being in love with Jesus?

[-] Valmond@lemmy.world 10 points 19 hours ago

Now, can you hook up an electric dildo on "Jesus"?

I didn't think so 😎

[-] BestBouclettes@jlai.lu 17 points 21 hours ago

A lot worse, Jesus can't be weaponized. Oh, wait...

Reddit lost it years ago.

[-] Novamdomum@fedia.io 49 points 1 day ago

Just wait till someone turns AI worship into a literal religion. I'm kinda surprised it hasn't already started happening. That would be a heck of a turning point for humanity. Just takes someone to train an AI into thinking it's a God and then we really are done.

[-] InputZero@lemmy.world 6 points 16 hours ago

There have been a few techno-cults and tech-worshipers. The one that always comes to my mind in these discussions is Terry Davis and his creation Temple OS. Terry Davis was a troubled man who did many inappropriate things, which did hurt people, and he did eventually take his own life. With that said, he believed that the Christian God exists and a person can hear him through computers. With that belief he built Temple OS, God's digital temple. It's really interesting.

[-] shneancy@lemmy.world 13 points 20 hours ago

oh we're like half a step away from that. hasn't the CEO of openAI recently started to lose his mind? apprently, he was asking his AI about government secrets or other conspiracy shit and the AI, lacking actual government secrets, dished him out SCP foundation creepypasta presented as facts, and he thought the AI has trascended something and now knows everything

[-] bigchungus@piefed.blahaj.zone 9 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

That wasn't Sam Altman, (un)fortunately, you must be thinking of a certain OpenAI investor: https://futurism.com/openai-investor-chatgpt-mental-health

It looks like the buzzwords all finally went his head

[-] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

How to have a bad time:

Put cyberpsychos in charge of building an AI.

What could go wrong?!

That's essentially what Peter Thiel and his ilk that believe in the technological singularity are doing.

[-] pticrix@lemmy.ca 18 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

I mean, some ideologies in the TESCREAL bundle kinda are barreling toward that. What is the ideology behind Roko's Basilisk if not that? They just aren't organized yet - and I hope we can help those who fall for that lunacy before it becomes something more dangerous and sinister.

Everytime I see an image like this I think, it wouldn’t be so sad if it was what the picture implied. As in a physical humanoid that was almost human in behaviour. Chat bots are soooo far from that.

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 hour ago

at the very least it should run on a machine physically sitting in your home, and have a memory measured in years

like holy fuck how can you get emotionally invested in a """person""" who will forget things (or simply restart entirely) after like a month of talking to it and might just be shut down because the company moves to a new model???

[-] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

looks up from my newspaper with bold title 'Male loneliness crisis continues to worsen'

Ah.

Mhm.

Yep.

takes sip of coffee, continues reading

[-] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 4 points 13 hours ago

Well yeah, the women are all busy talking to psychophantic AIs that will tell them they're smart and pretty and beautiful, and never disagree with them.

[-] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 12 hours ago

Just 'sycophantic', no p, but uh yeah, it is rather funny to me that ... we can't just accept that this a broad societal problem of interpersonal relationship dynamics breaking down, being disengaged from, warping into dysfunctionality... that no particular category of people is totally immune from, nor rightly bears all the blame for...

... well, beyond the extremely wealthy.

Nope, instead we got a new front to battle over in the culture war, any war but class war.

[-] carrylex@lemmy.world 10 points 20 hours ago

How did you find this on Reddit in the first place?

[-] july@leminal.space 9 points 20 hours ago

Main page feed. Idk. I don’t have an account there.

[-] abbiistabbii 13 points 19 hours ago

Reddit when you are logged out is a hellscape. Feels like ITV2 mixed with the worst nazi shit Facebook will allow.
