As a result of this discussion in !degoogle@lemmy.ml, there is now an IRC channel about degoogling!

/join ##degoogle on irc.libera.chat:6697 (TLS). The channel name begins with a double hashtag (according to the namespace policy).

Come on down and join us through your local IRC client or the web client web.libera.chat!

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that with IRC, you need to stay connected constantly—unless you use something like IRC Cloud or an IRC bouncer (soju, znc, etc.), which require a service or server of some sort.

I bring this up because I see a lot of people ask a question and then leave without waiting. If you want to ask a question or participate in a discussion, you'll need to keep your IRC connection on; otherwise, you won't see what others say while you're disconnected.

Why the double #? For be up in the channel list?

That's just the namespace policy of LiberaChat (i.e. we're not a specific software project, nor some other project of the kind outlined there).

Man, I haven't used IRC since the early 2000's. It must have been 20 years now. I'm trying to connect using Konversation, the KDE IRC client. I can't seem to connect to the irc server.

  • 2000’s: only correct if showing possession.

    “The 2000’s biggest trend was…” .
