Italian dockworkers have threatened to “shut down all of Europe” and block all shipments to Israel if communication with the latest aid flotilla bound for Gaza is lost. The threat marks a significant escalation in dockworkers’ long history of industrial action in solidarity with Palestine.

Speaking at a procession in the port of Genoa – one of Italy’s two largest commercial ports – on behalf of the Unione Sindacale di Base (USB), a syndicate of various grassroots unions in Italy and thought to be the largest of its kind, the dockworker said: “If we lose contact with our boats, with our comrades – even for just 20 minutes – we will shut down all of Europe.”

“Our young women and men must come back without a scratch, and all this cargo, which belongs to the people and is going to the people, must reach its destination, down to the very last box.”

“13,000-14,000 containers leave this region every year for Israel. Not a single nail will leave anymore,” he continued.

Gotta love seeing solidarity in action.

Must be why they're called Unione Sindacale di Base

Please, I don't ask for much, but please let this this one class solidarity action happen! I pray to the IWW saints!

that is metal as fuck!

Does Europe have the power to ensure the flotilla gets through? I suppose maybe if they are willing to act quite forcefully.

[-] HK65@sopuli.xyz 31 points 2 weeks ago

Yes, we have more warships and bigger armies than Israel by orders of magnitude.

OTOH the EU leadership is full of people who are either bought or just plain idiots.

[-] xiwi@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 2 weeks ago

They aren't bought, they just like what Israel is doing and agree with the actions of israel, hence they will continue to give material and moral support.

The EU-states are fully complicit in this matter.

Has anyone ever attacked a nuclear power before?

That's what I thought.

[-] AvocadoSandwich@eviltoast.org 16 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Yes actually. Ukraine bombed Moscow quite recently and I'm pretty sure Russia is considered a nuclear power.

[-] HugeNerd@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 weeks ago

Um, apparently a bunch of goat herders flew jets into buildings of a nuclear power on September 11, 2001. That's an "attack", no?

[-] regedit@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago

I can't remember!

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

has anyone checked the stockpile and verified it isn't made of wood?

[-] HK65@sopuli.xyz 16 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, Israel has, multiple times now, we just get out of the conundrum by not acknowledging it.

[-] metaStatic@kbin.earth 4 points 2 weeks ago

maybe I'm not keeping up with the news but the list of nuclear states is quite small and doesn't include anyone Israel would dare fuck with even before factoring in nuclear deterrence.

They recently attacked a British ship on international waters, and also attacked a US ship a good while ago, killing 34 people and wounding 171.

They don't have a bomb. Even the USA and Israel don't claim that.

[-] crumbguzzler5000@feddit.org 5 points 2 weeks ago

Unfortunately not, Israel and the US do not want to give Iran the chance to be on equal footing. In western history persia/iran was always the "evil" one.

[-] metaStatic@kbin.earth 2 points 2 weeks ago

do you really think Tel Aviv would still exist?

[-] masquenox@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 week ago

Unfortunately it probably would. The problem with nuclear weapons is that they stop being very useful the minute you start using them.

[-] xiwi@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 2 weeks ago

India, pakistan

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 weeks ago

Saudi Arabia attacked the US in 2001, so Iraq got bombed.

[-] masquenox@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 week ago

Yes... it's called 9/11. In response, the US spent 20 years and trillions of dollars to hand Afghanistan back to the Taliban.

[-] masquenox@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago

That's not it... European militaries help Israel spy on and intercept the flotillas. If they were to stop doing so, Israel would have to do so on it's own, as the US fleets already have their hands full containing the Yemenis. Fifty ships might be beyond Israel's capability to control, and would force them either to overtly attack the flotilla... or allow it through.
