Republicans would be upset about Wikipedia being censored if they knew how to read.

[-] rational_lib@lemmy.world 30 points 13 hours ago

They're really against anything nice that can be achieved through cooperation, aren't they?

[-] smeenz@lemmy.nz 14 points 10 hours ago

Or education. They absolutely hate education.

[-] myfunnyaccountname@lemmy.zip 7 points 10 hours ago

100% this. They don’t want educated people. And the news/media that does exist they want to control.

[-] ksh@aussie.zone 5 points 11 hours ago

They doing it to encourage offline cooperation /s

[-] Victoriathecompact@sh.itjust.works 16 points 13 hours ago

already have it all downloaded

[-] Corelli_III@midwest.social 38 points 16 hours ago

downloaded a backup yesterday

everyone with sense and 160GB should do the same

[-] ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 12 points 14 hours ago

Just 160gb? I will get a USB and back up the whole thing.

[-] Corelli_III@midwest.social 15 points 14 hours ago

25ish for your language of choice, 130 something for media files

very manageable, grab that copy

There is an app called Kiwix if you use Linux (I think it's a flatpak) or WSL for Windows! :) It lets you download different languages and sizes. I just learned you can use graphical apps for WSL now, wew.

[-] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 12 hours ago

That is cool WSL accomodates graphical apps, but after the recall Windows feature that snapshots everything, I'm about to remove Windows from my last computer that still has it. I really just need to figure out if my Steam save files will transfer to Linux since my Elden Ring character is level 220 or something crazy. I can't even use WSL at work any longer because security locked us out of admin permissions. Boooo!

[-] fossilesque@mander.xyz 3 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

They absolutely should, if not, you can probably run it in a VM shame box. I have a little windows set up on mine for some specialist apps. When games are installed via Proton on Linux, they usually are set up to mimic the file structure for windows.

[-] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 10 hours ago

I am running Arch with Hyprland, and I have not had any issues with games yet. I have not even tried Proton yet. Maybe it is because they are supported on Linux. I can not remember though.

[-] fossilesque@mander.xyz 3 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

Proton works just as well as native, so even if the saves are not compatible with the native version, you'll be able to copy the files into the proton structure.

[-] Edgarallenpwn@midwest.social 4 points 14 hours ago

Could I use this to set a monthly job that runs and updates my local copy? Does it download/update changes made since my last sync or would it just redownload and replace the previous months in this situation?

[-] fossilesque@mander.xyz 7 points 14 hours ago

It doesn't work like that (yet), but it is the easiest way to keep an offline copy. They have more info about this here: https://kiwix.org/en/frequently-asked-questions/

I just downloaded the 23G file or whatever. If there is a way to checksum portions of it and run a script against the online checksum to detect differences, that might be one way. The only problem is that it is now being modified for political purposes. This version might be the best we will ever get. I almost wish we could download a pre-2020 version. It would eliminate both the slop and any influence that came after the sudden wealth gap increase that occurred during the pandemic.

[-] hakobo@lemmy.world 13 points 15 hours ago

There's an article here on how to utilize Wikipedia offline, and you can look under the "Where do I get the dumps?" section for links to downloads.

MAGA = Make Americans Gormless Assholes

[-] selkiesidhe@sh.itjust.works 15 points 14 hours ago

MAGAt morons really hate facts...

[-] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 13 points 17 hours ago

Sir you seem to have a bias for presenting unbiased facts. This simply can not be.

[-] obinice@lemmy.world 12 points 17 hours ago

Hey no fair, the US is just copying us! (UK)

We targeted Wikipedia first recently waaaaa

[-] Vex_Detrause@lemmy.ca 4 points 15 hours ago

Are you guys having problems with your politics? I heard COVID vaccines is not free for everyone.

[-] ChaoticEntropy@feddit.uk 3 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

We've had problems with our politics for as long as politics has existed. It's a miracle we have anything nice, and there have been people undermining and trying to claw back anything nice we have on Day 2+ of us getting it.

[-] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 13 points 17 hours ago

I wonder if they're going to investigate conservapedia for bias.

[-] abbiistabbii 49 points 22 hours ago

How long is it going to be until America has a great firewall ala China.

[-] rozodru@piefed.social 55 points 21 hours ago

well it's already happening. look what recently happened in Mississippi with age verification.

protip if you're American and you ask "how long until America has such and such" chances are, 9 times out of 10, it's already happening or has happened and you're just not aware.

Not bias, but I was surprised to find out how Wikipedia is censoring information surrounding ChrisChan.

All of the articles mentioning him in English just say he's an internet personality, and his English Wikipedia page has been removed.

That kind of censorship doesn't sit will with me. What else are they keeping from us?

[-] communist@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz 6 points 10 hours ago

This is to stop a cyberbullying campaign against a disabled person

That kind of censorship doesn't sit will with me. What else are they keeping from us?

probably other things to harrass individuals with?

[-] humanoidchaos@lemmy.cif.su 1 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

Yeah, no.

It's still censorship even if the person in question wants it to be censored.

People shouldn't get to dictate whether or not wikipedia articles are made of them.

[-] communist@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz 1 points 9 hours ago

If I made a wikipedia page showing your social security and banking information would your stance hold true?

[-] humanoidchaos@lemmy.cif.su 1 points 9 hours ago

Wikipedia already doesn't allow that, so your question is pointless.

[-] communist@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz 1 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

for the same reason they don't give resources to blatant harassment campaigns.

both are against the rules and both are censorship for nearly identical reasons

[-] humanoidchaos@lemmy.cif.su 1 points 5 hours ago

You're moving goalposts, but ok.

[-] communist@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz 1 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

My point was that censorship is valid when it is to prevent harming individuals/fraud/bullying

my goalpost did not move at all.

you are being a hypocrite by saying it was okay not to have that on wikipedia because it was already banned

you should oppose that ban on the basis of censorship, no?

[-] ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 1 points 11 hours ago

These people know the CWCwiki exists, right? I mean I was obsessed with CWC a little over 10 years ago, too, but I have long since lost interest in the whole matter.

[-] humanoidchaos@lemmy.cif.su 1 points 11 hours ago

That doesn't make it ok.
