Anything but paying people

[-] doctortofu@piefed.social 8 points 1 day ago

In this fucked up capitalist dystopia we're living in, the rich and powerful will sooner bring back slavery (not that it ever fully disappeared) than pay people living wages for their work...

And we, the people will bend over and take it, because we are all docile fucking cowards - I include myself in this assessment too.

Not to sound unhinged, but TSMT Why does so much pain have to be dispersed before the obvious root issue is addressed? Hasn't this been an embarrassingly obvious repeat mistake for too long?

I guess the only thing we can learn from history is that we really can't learn from it at all

They are understaffed because of absolutely ridiculous hiring standards. My wife was trying to become one, just the applications are 30+ pages. Every detail of every aspect of your work history is requested. You had a spouse smoke weed once in 2004, you better list it. Every traffic ticket needs to be listed. Already diagnosed anxiety/depression, that's almost guaranteed a no. Pass a lie detector confirming every aspect of your application. You get the idea.

She was in the top 5% of all applicants during the skills tests in multiple cities. She was denied each time because I USED TO smoke weed years ago. She volunteered hair samples from myself and her to prove we were clean. Still said no. The cops joked that it was easier to become a cop than a 911 dispatch.

Just do what they did in The Simpsons. When you dial 911 you get a list of all the possible crimes and you select the number for the one you're reporting:

"You have selected regicide. If you know the name of the king or queen being murdered, press 1."

“You’re absolutely right! A gunshot wound is something to take very seriously.”

I used an AI taco bell drive thru the other day, granted it's Taco Bell, but it was actually not bad.

I asked questions, it answered them correctly. Made changes to my order when I requested it.

911 isn't the appropriate place for AI, but it's better than not being answered at all.

Looks like almost no one RTFA:

When he started to research how municipal non-emergency response call centers work, he discovered that they are often handled by the same people who are answering actual 911 emergencies.

Aurelian pivoted to building an AI voice assistant that helps 911 call centers offload non-emergency call volume. The company announced on Wednesday that it raised a $14 million Series A led by NEA.

The company’s AI voice agent is designed to triage non-urgent issues like noise complaints, parking violations, and even stolen wallet reports — situations that don’t need an officer’s immediate response or can be handled without dispatching personnel to the scene.

Aurelian’s AI is trained to recognize a real emergency and immediately transfer those calls to a human dispatcher, Keenan said. In other situations, the system collects key information and either creates a report for or relays the details directly to the police department for follow-up action.

According to the article, this LLM is not being used to field emergency calls. Well, not yet, anyway.

The AI is determining whether calls are emergencies or not. I’d hate to be a caller who has the AI get it wrong and gets a report written.
