I use Spectacle for taking screenshots and I've enjoyed using it for several years. After that, I'd crop it in any image editor that has a freehand selector tool. Gimp would be the first thing I tried, but I'm sure you could find something easily enough.

Thank you for this guide! I guess I wasn't clear about the functionality I was looking for. I want to be able to draw a shape, say a circle instead of a rectangle, and have the screenshot only be of what I've circled. Snipping tool in Windows had this functionality, you could select that instead of a rectangle or square it would be freeform. I wanted to know if there was any Linux equivalent, because I haven't been able to find one on my own.
I'm pretty sure you'll just have to cut it out of a rectangle in another program like gimp, sorry.
I guess it not much popular solution about taking screenshots in this way.... As far as I remember the newest versions of gnome does have this feature in their screenshot utility,anything else not coming in mind
