linus has it set up at a treadmill while he works.

Well, he must be standing on something. It's either that, or the ceiling of that room is really low.

[-] coralof@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I remember the video this is from. I think it's just a low wall that's open above that with a staircase on the other side.

[-] umbraroze@slrpnk.net 50 points 1 week ago

Linus was a bit of a trendsetter what comes to standing desks. In an interview he also commented on the walls, saying the paint colour is also used in mental institutions because it has a very calming effect on the human mind. (Goodness knows Linus needs all the chill he can muster.)

That paint color also makes his pants technically camouflage!

And a single monitor? 2010?

[-] josephalumin@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

It was once seen as the future!

Why is "ios" the only one not in all-caps? Why does the apple hq list their mobile system while the other two list their desktop/workstation/server systems? Why does each get a different proportion of the screen/why aren't they equally sized/why are they not stacked vertically? Why is this man not using dark mode, and how is the obvious and glaring light bleed at the bottom-left of his monitor just get accepted?

This picture, it frustrates me on many levels.

[-] Psaldorn@lemmy.world 38 points 1 week ago

Pretty sure "That man" is Linus Torvalds and the light bleed is actually the desktop background (looks like a photo)

As for the rest.. 🤷

[-] jaybone@lemmy.zip 12 points 1 week ago

This picture, it frustrates me on many levels.

Why don’t you tell us about it?

[-] cholesterol@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Why is "ios" the only one not in all-caps?

iOS begins with a lower-case 'i', making this error more frequent.

Why does the apple hq list their mobile system while the other two list their desktop/workstation/server systems?

Apple's most iconic product is the iPhone, but the meme compares software. So the 'Apple'-item then becomes iOS.

Why does each get a different proportion of the screen/why aren't they equally sized/why are they not stacked vertically?

The rule of three applies to jokes and typically dictates that the punchline is third and given extra emphasis. The layout reflects that tradition.

Why is this man not using dark mode, and how is the obvious and glaring light bleed at the bottom-left of his monitor just get accepted?

From what I've seen, Linus Thorvalds uses default work environments and doesn't care much about hardware beyond functionality.

[-] sneezycat@sopuli.xyz 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Also, the Linux man is using windows (default windows background plus windows explorer open).

Edit: yes, I was wrong. For every downvote this gets, I'll install a distro without systemd in another computer.

Edit 2: y'all making me spend all my money on Void Linux licenses...

[-] greedytacothief@lemmy.dbzer0.com 27 points 1 week ago

Looks like he's using gnome, you can tell by the top bar. Also Linux man is Linus Torvalds and last I heard he used fedora. Which checks out since it uses gnome as default.

[-] sneezycat@sopuli.xyz 12 points 1 week ago

Huh, it seems you're right. I guess I've been using plasma/hyprland for too long x_x

I didn't recognize him, he looks so different when he's not angrily flipping someone off.

[-] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 week ago

You better say you use Arch before you get banned.

[-] sneezycat@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

It is in my bio! Come on!

[-] AntEater@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 week ago

Why is this man not using dark mode…

Not everyone likes dark mode. I can’t speak for Linus, but dark mode seriously bothers my eyes.

Guess which one runs 99% of the internet.

[-] CeeBee_Eh@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago

Also, guess which one ALL of them run on their servers.

[-] thatradomguy@lemmy.world 34 points 1 week ago

WFH before WFH was cool. That's how cool it is.

Well, the buildings, of course, are funded by anti-user-bullshit.

[-] _stranger_@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I'm pretty sure they only built the spaceship because Steve Jobs was dying and no one was willing to tell him no. They're really proud of that shit

I mean, their entire design philosophy can be summed up as "form over function", so a circular building with all of the problems that entails makes complete sense.

I remember a few years ago Linus said he uses a macbook with Linux on it. I wonder what he uses now that macs aren't x86 anymore.

Edit: all I can find is he is still using a macbook now with an m2 chip. For his desktop he has a threadripper CPU and an Rx 580

[-] panicnow@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

My memory is that it was an ARM based laptop. This story seems to confirm that: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/08/linus-torvalds-uses-an-arm-powered-m2-macbook-air-to-release-latest-linux-kernel/

I think it was the Asahi district.

[-] CeeBee_Eh@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

I wonder what he uses now that macs aren't x86 anymore.

He's using an old Intel laptop right now.

Wich is not x86... also the apple chips are arm so linux should work on them no?

IMO the apple campus looks like a urinal. Fittingly.

[-] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago
[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 week ago

That's the kind of nonsensically ominous warnings I'm looking for in a horoscope!

[-] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

if that taurical building looks like a urinal to that guy, they should stay away from anything that has doughnuts and bagels.

Most things can be done with a lot less resources than you think

Not for getting billions in unnecessary funding from people with too much money and such poor decision-making that I wouldn't trust them to house sit for me.

[-] Wicket1138@discuss.tchncs.de 17 points 1 week ago

Thats Not the Microsoft HQ. Thats their Munich Office.

[-] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 24 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I can understand why they went with it though, it's pretty difficult to find an image of 'the microsoft HQ' given that the real HQ is the redmond campus, and it's kinda comically huge.

[-] undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch 12 points 1 week ago

Why are Linux, Windows uppercase? Where is macOS? Why is iOS lowercase?

[-] Revan343@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Apple's preferred spelling is that macOS and iOS not be capitalized, much like xkcd. But yeah, now that you mention it, that just says 'ios'.

Darn lazy memers

[-] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

It was always pretty humorous to me that Microsoft named its early-2000s mobile operating system "Windows Compact Edition" and abbreviated it (officially) as "WinCE". The capitalization really mattered in this case.

[-] Phoenix3875@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

I had the same question. The author didn't seem to employ the scientific rigor to call things by their correct names. It's as if they're treating it like spelling in a meme.

[-] undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch 2 points 1 week ago

treating it like spelling in a meme

Is spelling things correctly in memes substantially harder than elsewhere?

And the treadmill isn't even in the picture!

[-] Fedizen@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Ok this is a good one

[-] cralex@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 week ago

As a longtime Mac user, I remember when my OS became basically bigger iOS.
