there is a more consistent alternative that makes exact same sound.

it's also already established and everyone will understand it.

capital letters make string parsing slightly more pain too.

on the topic of computers, systems with case-sensitive names just get confusing when capitals are involved.

meanwhile systems without it just make capital more unnecesary.

camelCase is the only practical situation to capital letters and most of the population won't ever use that.

useless

Reading text without capitalization is annoying. I know because I read your post.

Languages that have more thought put into them than English use capital letters to help guide the reader's eye, structure the sentence, and differentiate between types of words. They also use more commas, for similar reasons. You just don't know what you're missing.

HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO LET PEOPLE KNOW I LIKE CRANKING MY HOG WITHOUT CAPITAL LETTERS!? ARRROOOOO!

If nothing else, not capitalizing first letters and proper nouns will just look weird to many readers. If there's no capitalization in a sentence, I'm inclined to assume the writer accidentally mistyped an incomplete sentence or phrase. Not capitalizing proper nouns will create significant confusion since some proper nouns are also general terms.

"after friday, land is out."

Is that a reference to land as in earth or is it a reference to someone whose last name is Land?

Making communication more difficult by requiring your reader to spend more effort to parse your intended message might not be a good idea.

German: Komm wir essen Opa! Komm wir essen, Opa!

English: Come we are eating grandpa. Come we are eating, grandpa.

There's 26 excited letters to use for emphasis but you opted to be dry as Toast.

I just wish my phone would stop teaching itself to capitalize Pic. It'll go months accepting it's a common word and then decide it's just a proper noun again

[-] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

might be because creepy people have inconsistant capitalization rofl.

"send Pics."

As far as I know, other languages (Japanese, Arabic etc) get along without capital letters...

Is capital letters just a European thing?

[-] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Greco-Roman thing, kept because it is in fact useful and has a point. For example, designating proper nouns. Or Demonstrating Emphasis For Silly People And Facebook Olds. OR TO CONVEY VOLUME OF "SPEECH." Etc.

I find uncapitalized text strangely pleasant to read. This better not awaken something in me.

Showerthoughts

1029 users here now

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
