Similar idea. A show called Payoff, where each episode is an alternative ending to a show with a shitty finale.

[-] ruuster13@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

White Lotus - the brothers end up together.

[-] jaybone@lemmy.zip 6 points 3 days ago

Was just going to say so many good shows had shitty endings. Sometimes I wonder if it’s just better if they just get cancelled. It’s sad to say.

[-] msage@programming.dev 4 points 2 days ago

We're going to cry either way.

At least shitty ending is still an ending.

As I understand it, this was essentially what Tarantino did with Reservoir dogs

[-] ruuster13@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

And Once Upon a Time

[-] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago

What was it meant to be an alternate ending to?

[-] KingPorkChop@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 days ago

The Brady Bunch

[-] PolarKraken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago

Eh? C'mon you gotta elaborate on that!

monkey's paw closes

"Here's what our AI thinks would have happened!"

[-] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 17 points 2 days ago

Tbf, AI might've written a better ending for the GOT TV series.

[-] colmear@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 2 days ago

The ending felt more like an AI summary of a possible ending than a real ending

[-] 9point6@lemmy.world 55 points 3 days ago

If they could get the original writers for each show back together and do it as a sort of documentary interview format with some BtS stories, and this could legitimately be really good TV

[-] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 17 points 3 days ago

In some cases I feel the original writers have done quite enough already.

[-] errer@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

Put up a democratic rank ordering of cancelled shows that people want to see “closed” and use that to prioritize

[-] crank0271@lemmy.world 21 points 3 days ago

Why? Just so Netflix could cancel it partway through the first season and Paramount or Max could pick it up and eventually shelve it?

[-] jaybone@lemmy.zip 5 points 3 days ago

But first they will start a new service called Paramount++# Enterprise Edition which will cost an extra $12.99 per month and only have that one show.

[-] crank0271@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Alas, the Paramount++# Enterprise Edition service now shows limited ads during that one show. You'll have to upgrade to Paramount++# Enterprise Edition (No Ads) if you don't want to see ads during that one show.

[-] ZeffSyde@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Alternately, I'd watch a season of a show that was 12 episodes of unconnected cliffhangers because there is something deep down inside of me that needs to be punished.

[-] brem@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago

Episode 1: We examine 'Firefly' & determine it wouldn't have been as legendary had it been longer than a single season.

Episode 2: We examine 'Weird City' & determine that it would've went to shit because.. ya know; YouTube.

Episode 3: We examine 'It's Bruno' & determine that it would end up like 'The Bear' had it been renewed.

Episode 4: We examine 'Jury Duty' & determine that the first season was all that was necessary.

Episode 5: We examine 'Moonbase 8' and break the mold. We want more.

Episode 6: We examine 'Other Space' & determine that it was fun, but a good call to end it before it outstayed it's welcome.

Episode 7: We examine 'Police Squad' & get distracted with advertisements for the new 'Naked Gun' reboot.

Episode 8: We examine 'This Show' & determine that it is not necessary & it's fine for things to not have an extended life.

You're right, not everything needs more. It's not a problem if shows are short, even just one season, as long as they actually end.

Shows could easily be written so their stories fit a season, just like movies are made whose story fits in 2 hours.

But they aren't - because the producers always choose to go with an unresolved cliffhanger to keep the hype for a possible next season, even though they know shows these days are cancelled more than they are renewed.

The issue is ambition and greed getting in the way of writing stories that actually finish and have closure.

And I hate that because it really disrespects us, the viewers.

[-] brem@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

as long as they actually end.

..most great things in life finish their journey unwrapped, *no neat package included. Closure sold separately ^^at^^the^^price^^of^^imagination^^for^^those^^who^^experienced^^said^thang

Examples:

'Star Trek' only voyaged 3 of 5 years (unless you count the animated series.)

Life itself, under normal circumstances (unless you are a flower or rich human)

[-] FelixMortane@lemmy.ca 11 points 3 days ago

This is one of the few "internet ideas" that actually made me wonder why it hasn't been done. Not only would it please fan bases, it would draw huge viewership to shows announced to be on the upcoming episode list. Show would have to release an episode once ever X months

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 26 points 3 days ago

Getting the rights to all those shows would be hugely expensive

[-] Zorque@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago

Getting the actors to come back would also be a hassle, especially the ones whose careers have taken off in a bigger way. Not just scheduling, but paying as well. Recasting would cause huge issues as well.

[-] emb@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

And if they even can get permission and afford the rights and find (and afford) some of the original writers and actors, the fanbase would probably end up unhappy with whatever ending you serve. They've had plenty of time to build up impossible expectations.

[-] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Until Disney and Paramount own everything after WB goes out of business.

[-] IncognitoMosquito@beehaw.org 10 points 3 days ago

I still love how Batman Beyond got cancelled to get the animation team on a new show, Static Shock, so they just wrote the ending to Batman Beyond into a time travel episode of Static Shock lol.

[-] Revan343@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago

Both shows were fantastic

Some of our community are unable to read text embedded in images (blind folks, for example).

Copying in the original text helps them participate in posts like this one.

I mention because you're one of my favorite community members, and it makes me sad to think folks are missing out on some of your posts.

Thanks for your contributions here!

Will do pinball when you say copy in what do you mean? As in type out the meme in the main post?

[-] pinball_wizard@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Right. If it's pure image, and the source is long lost, I try to remember to type it out. Other times, if I have access to the original text, I can copy and paste it.

Nice one I'll start doing that as much as possible thanks mate

[-] Underwaterbob@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 days ago

Oooh oooh, make it a comedy show where they do it with a low budget, mediocre impersonators of original actors, and zero respect for the source material.

[-] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 8 points 3 days ago

I just finished another of those shows that studiously avoid showing how the baddies actually die, no doubt to bring them back in season 2. So yeah, one more episode to bring closure would be appreciated.

That kinda did happen though with Serenity.

This is the first thing I thought od when I saw this thread. Great show.

"Well, that all stinks. No wonder you all got canceled"

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

[-] MIDItheKID@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

The Pirates of Dark Water.

Please. For fuck's sake. Please just complete this part of my childhood.

They set out and started an adventure that should have been many many seasons, but one day I went to watch it and it was just gone.

As a kid I had no ear on the ground about shows getting canceled and back in the 90s I don't think anybody really did.

It's like if it was DBZ and they got the dragon ball locators to revive Goku after he died and they collected like 3 of them and then they just stopped airing it.

I honestly have never gone back and watched Pirates of Dark Water, and it's probably trash, but I will never forget about how I was so invested in a story as a kid and it just... Stopped.

It was gone like a fart in the wind.

The SNES beat em up was also super difficult and not that good. It seemed like an idea that was built around sucking up quarters at the arcade, but apparently it want popular enough.

Fucking Pirates of Dark Water, man... I will never forget.
