I don't care how great the new season is, I'm not financially supporting Paramount.
Arrr me hearties.
New season good? It feels like Alex Kurzman dipped his dick in it all the way this time and turned it in to a ST:Discovery.
I won't know until the season is done and I torrent it. Or by then I might forget about it
I used to sign up for Paramount whenever a new Trek show came out.
Will there be singing again?
ugh I fucking hated that episode.
BUT I'm glad they have the ability to do wacky new shit, which is what we need more of in TV and even Movies. That specific one just wasn't for me, and that's okay.
God, I hope not...
I swear, Paramount must've hired all of the old Nickelodeon staff or something. What's next, a Strange New Worlds and Sabrina: The Teenage Witch cross-over?
(I'd honestly prefer a Pete & Pete cross-over if that's an option. Where they have to use Petunia as an intermediary for a race that only communicates through tattoos. That or Doug.)
I liked the singing episode. I feel like SNW strikes a great balance of goofy and serious that I never saw in Disco.
I couldn't stand Discovery at all. All of the crying and emotional break-downs ruined it for me. It felt like watching a high school drama where the whole being in space part was just a backdrop. (13 Reasons Why: In Space!)
SNW feels like it's trying to do the opposite by being quirky and just taking it too far. A high school rom-com rather than a full blown drama, if you will. (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: With Aliens!)
As someone who's been watching Trek for 40+ years. These new shows just don't feel like Star Trek anymore. The franchise has been co-opted into... something else.
The wedding planner alien was the most TOS episode they've had yet. There were tons of goofy episodes like that. TNG s1e3 the naked now, which was a callback to TOS's The Naked Time.
Those episygave us "I am fully functional" and "Oh My" respectively.
I actually enjoyed the premise of the wedding planner episode. Again, I just think they take it too far ~~sometimes~~ most of the time.

As a lore nerd (probably the only reason I still watch tbh) I loved that they finally confirmed Trelane was an early (younger) evolution of the Q, for example.
I get it. I hated neelix for a very long time. I think part of what you're picking up on is classic episodic arc pacing. Before streaming, shows would put light episodes in between the heavy ones (the heavy ones usually being the ones that drove the arc). Since it was all episodic, the disjunction didn't matter. SNW feels like they're playing into that, whereas Disco was ALL RED ALERT ALL THE TIME WE CAN LAUGH WHEN WERE DEAD. (The only thing I truly disliked about Disco).
and since SNW is bingeable, the silly episodes feel a lot more prevalent
(IMHO)
(I loved the singing episode)
You're probably right, they also had the mid-season breaks back then. Which really slowed the pacing down. So even when watched weekly now, you don't get to digest it all the same way.
Like the recent Gorn episodes. Those would have been the mid-season finale & premiere on the older shows.
PS - I still hate Neelix... with a passion. I literally dread every scene with him during every rewatch. They should have seriously just shot him out of the airlock in episode 3. And B'Elanna to a lesser extent (she acted like a spoiled child, not an angry Klingon).
Your thoughts mirror my own a lot. Early B'Elanna was rough. She mellowed out a little later in the show ๐
Weirdly, nowadays it's Chkotay that makes me cringe, knowing what I know now about how his character was cobbled together by a racist scam artist memalpha link
I had a friend with a trauma-riddled past who identified with Neelix. He said he saw a lot of his own past struggles in the character, and that watching him go from bumbling joke to competent team member instilled a kind of hope. Turned my perspective around on him.
While I'm not a huge fan of every other episode being "filler" it really does help the show breath.
Why does the muppet look more like him than the picture?
It's that magnificent hair, it just captures the attention of the viewer
