I thought Shawarma was the actual sliced meat. Is there a specific rice that goes with it? Dish looks tasty too.

Shawarma is definitely the meat (traditionally cooked on a vertical rotisserie), but "shawarma rice" is a popular dish where the seasoned meat is served over rice thats been cooked with similar spices (usually cardamom, cumin, cinnamon, bay leaves) - its basically a deconstructed shawarma wrap with rice instead of bread.

I did not know that!

I think typically you use Basmati rice for making shawarma rice, as for the meat we only had chicken thighs on hand at the time, would've loved to have shredded lamb with it too. Also made tahini sauce to go with it not included in the picture though

No idea what "shawarma rice" is supposed to be but that looks fucking delicious

Kinda like Kabsa rice but...shawarma. Yeah it was delicious 😎

Every culture has their version of biryani

Thanks, loved that and hadn't heard it before

With Filipino dishes, I'd have to agree also.

But which version of Biryani is the best in your opinion? Hopefully I won't have started a biryani war here πŸ˜‚

I think it's already clear based on my selection of the defining term

I don't know what website she used but I'm pretty sure you'll find one you're looking for if you search around, I didn't ask her 😞

Tell your sister she has delicious looking thighs!

[-] Dis32@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Ya cheeky bugger πŸ˜‚

Why the down vote?

[-] Monument@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 1 week ago

Some people just don’t appreciate complementing a woman on her cooking.

I can understand. It can be reductive if that’s the only characteristic we value someone for. I, myself, value a great sense of humor, but preferences, like seasonings, are to taste.

[-] Dis32@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I mean you don't know me personally so I'd just laugh at your jokes, even if you did, I'd still laugh and move on, because I know it's just banter. Clearly not the case for whoever downvoted you πŸ˜…

Well put!

That looks grand with the thighs nestling into the rice. And you know that rice flavour is going to have benefited from the meat juices as it cooked. It's such a good way to cook meat and rice. There's a reason biryani is so popular!

I might be inclined to hit it with some chopped parsley for colour. And a good spritz of lemon if she's not already done that.

[-] Dis32@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Hehe thank you very much! Now that you've mentioned it, we did have some parsley lying around, just forgot to picture it it was too late πŸ˜… and she made a tahini sauce with a bit of lemon to go with it too! πŸ‘πŸ½

Tastiest part of the chicken IMO
