Rationally, the EU agreed to buy stuff that would have bought anyway and the US decided to self impose taxes raising its internal prices.

But yeah, politically it sucks.

Funny thing: probably it sucks for Americans too.

[-] njm1314@lemmy.world 23 points 5 days ago

Tariffs are not merely an internal issue though. Sure they hurt the consumers the most, but they still are a damage of the people trying to sell the items too. Those tariffs do result in people buying less that's why they exist in the first place.

[-] Soup@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

The USA has never really cared about consumers being able to buy things. If they did they’d make sure to pay them enough to pay for things but they’ll cause recession after recession and then bitch about people, who they told not to drink lattes to save money, not buying their useless garbage.

[-] JumpyWombat@lemmy.ml 3 points 4 days ago

That's true. Tariff will likely decrease the demand of some products that have an elastic demand. The result will be that Americans will pay 15% more for all the products, for some they will buy alternatives (where they exists) or less, and Europe will need to increase the market in the rest of the world for the share of products that cannot be sold anymore. In the short term it will likely hurt Europe too, but in the long term the impact will be basically only on the US.

[-] ceenote@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

Ha! You Europoors are just mad you can't afford to pay more money for everything! Once again, Trump totally owned you! God Bless America!

[-] FreeBeard@slrpnk.net 6 points 5 days ago

Look at your inflation. It doensn't mean that the US won. It means our countries will fail together.

I thought it was obvious, but I guess I should have added the old /s

[-] JumpyWombat@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 days ago

How can you tell it's sarcasm when the POTUS himself says stuff like that?

[-] Klear@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Because the POTUS doesn't post on Lemmy.

[-] JumpyWombat@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 days ago

No. He uses directly the White House account on X for that BS.

[-] DrDeadCrash@programming.dev 5 points 4 days ago

It's not funny anymore...

[-] JumpyWombat@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 days ago

Wait until MAGA-fans will find out how tariffs work.

...oh yeah, that implies being able to do math.

[-] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 6 points 5 days ago

Funny thing: probably it sucks for Americans too.

No, it only sucks for the vast majority of them. If you produce locally, from local materials, you're golden! I mean, its 2025 and nobody does that anymore. But there might be a few of them left.

[-] JumpyWombat@lemmy.ml 6 points 4 days ago

Except that even if you buy 100% American products, those selling them may not. When inflation happens, it happens for everyone.

Unless of course you talk about the perfect MAGA in a self-sufficient farm in the middle of nowhere, with a tinfoil hat and a cork in his ass against alien probes.

Ruggedly individualistic!

[-] Ghyste@sh.itjust.works 4 points 4 days ago

The dipshit imposing tariffs doesn't understand tariffs so yeah, it very much sucks for us.

[-] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 days ago

It will impact Americans the most by far. The US is literally shooting itself in the foot.

[-] pulsewidth@lemmy.world 12 points 4 days ago

This is what happens when a guy who was, according to his professor "the dumbest goddamn student I ever had" is made president.

He keeps trying to shove the triangle into the square hole while exclaiming, "it's a perfect fit".

Tariffs alone will never bring back manufacturing to the US. Those jobs are gone thanks to globalism, and why would you need them back when you could instead invest in a more service-oriented economy and with more highly specialised (and valuable) tertiary industry jobs. All tariffs do in this situation is tax everyone and drive inflation rapidly - both at a time when people are at historically high levels of personal debt.

[-] Ronno@feddit.nl 10 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Yes he's dumb, but on the topic of tariffs he knows it will not bring blue collar jobs back to the US_, look at his own merch or the phone he is selling, all made in China. Secondly, he didn't write Project 2025, there are smarter people than Trump pulling the strings, there is ulterior motive to push for these tariffs. I personally don't really know what, other than wrecking the economy or maybe purposefully devaluating the dollar.

[-] JumpyWombat@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 days ago

Please remember that every time he announces something, even if doesn’t happen, the market fluctuates. If you know in advance, you can profit. The Trump administrator is constantly committing insider trading.

[-] JumpyWombat@lemmy.ml 3 points 4 days ago

and why would you need them back

Exactly! What's the endgame here?

The only explanation I have is that in his (and Musk's) mind all intellectual jobs will be replaced by AI, and the US will need to shift everybody to manual jobs to assemble stuff. It's so stupid and dystopic that it may even be true.

[-] martinb@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

You forget the rise of the robots. No need for stupid meatbags to assemble stuff when a metalskin can ~~hallucinate~~ do it perfectly every time

[-] JumpyWombat@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 days ago

Even worse then: no point in imposing tariffs to encourage local production.

[-] Nico_198X@europe.pub 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

That's right! Tariffs go into... The square hole!

[-] notso@feddit.org 6 points 4 days ago

Trump: "Hey Europe, how about this: I'll kick you in the nuts and you get to smile and do nothing in return. How does that sound?" EU:

[-] Brynawel@feddit.org 9 points 5 days ago

With this show of cowardice and spinelessness the project European Union is dead to me.

[-] nao@sh.itjust.works 9 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

The EU is not perfect but it's the best option we have

[-] FreeBeard@slrpnk.net 9 points 5 days ago

Europa nicht den Leyen überlassen 💙

[-] Korne127@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Aber auch bitte nicht den Sonneborns D:

[-] rawn@feddit.org 4 points 4 days ago

It looks to me like they're trying to make the best out of a bad situation. There's more tariff now on EU goods, but it may keep the US involved in Ukraine while the concessions made on the EU side aren't massive in the grand scheme of things.

At the same time this deal says to everyone who's looking "We try, despite our differences", which makes it rather difficult to paint the EU as the bad guy if he reconsiders.

At the end of the day what the EU wants to be internationally is a reliable partner. That's what trust is built on.

[-] Nico_198X@europe.pub 5 points 5 days ago

Don't be so dramatic.

[-] JumpyWombat@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 days ago

It's very disappointing if you wanted a strong response for an ephemeral short term win. In the long run, the 15% tariffs alone will harm the US while the EU will diversify more its market.

[-] Agrivar@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

JFC, who let the MAGA American into feddit.org?

[-] Mio@feddit.nu 5 points 4 days ago

Trump thinks he made a good deal: we managed to increased all prices by 15%. Everybody needs to pay more. Lets celebrate....

If it was so good with 15%. Just think about if he did the same with the taxes. But for taxes he instead want to lower them...

[-] Obi@sopuli.xyz 11 points 4 days ago

Because the tariff is (mostly) a tax on the poor, it's consumers that end up footing the bill. Higher taxes impact the rich more, can't have that.

[-] AceFuzzLord@lemmy.zip 7 points 5 days ago

I feel bad for anyone who has ever had to attend a meeting with trump and Von Der Layen is no different. It tops my list of most embarrassing things you could have to deal with in your lifetime as thistle point.
