[-] TheOneAndOnly@lemmy.world 24 points 1 month ago

Just last night, we were watching a show that featured this fact about elephants, and I turned to my girlfriend and made this exact comment! Hilarious

Just want to point how weird it is that Spock's wife is so patient, understanding, and loving in SNW when she's such an evil conniving bitch in TOS and that's only a few years later. I'm assuming we're going to see spock do something awful to her.

I mean he is kind of in love with the ship's nurse, it's not hard to imagine what comes next.

[-] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago

Yeah good point, and t'ping is already kind of aware of it.

Musth is a periodic condition in male elephants characterized by aggressive behavior and accompanied by a large rise in reproductive hormones.

The image from the OOP is in the article. TL;DR, male elephants get crazy angry when they're horny you assert their dominance.

Musk is a male asshole characterized by aggressive Nazi behavior and accompanied by a large rise in reproductive hormones.

Could we try going five minutes without bringing him up? It's exhausting.

Idk why my keyword filter didn't pick this comment up but I wish it did

[-] BootLoop@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 month ago

I think the keyword filters are just for posts, at least for the client I'm using (Thunder). However I would love if comment filtering was a thing.

Are you implying that he would be the most emotionally intelligent and empathetic animal on the planet, were it not for puberty?

[-] theneverfox@pawb.social 2 points 1 month ago

He was doing really well before he met Trump in the white house for the first time. He was still an idiot, and apparently a Nazi, but he was very quiet about being a Nazi, and he was good at getting people excited for electric cars and space travel

i get that he was good at getting people excited for electric cars and space travel, but that's no excuse to slashing social safety nets. and that's definitely what he intended to do when given the chance. it was only due to public backlash that it was stopped. sociopathic behavior.

[-] theneverfox@pawb.social 2 points 1 month ago

Oh no, he was always a weird psycho and certified idiot. But musk before and meeting Trump in the Whitehouse is night and day

Musth, not Musk

The rhinoceros beetle says “check this slab of HOT bug SEX sitting before you upon a stick. My stick. No one else may perch upon my throne, my lair, my kingdom, lest they be smote upon the ground like so much errant detritus. I am a fucking god.” Sex appeal is weird across the animal kingdom.

Please point me in the direction to learn about this.

I've got some praying to do.

elephant pregnancy lats 22 months

makes sense that elephant psychosis would last longer too

[-] plyth@feddit.org 2 points 1 month ago
[-] youCanCallMeDragon@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

Real reason is males are mostly solitary and elephant territories are enormous. Being horny for months gives the males enough motivation to seek out the herd of women and children over the long distances.

[-] AppleTea@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 month ago

elephants have an unusually long gestation period (and not just for their size, whales are typically only pregnant for about 12 months) Researchers think its necessary to give their brains time to fully develop, of which they have the outright largest of any land mammal and a body-to-brain ratio that rivals our own.

As for psychosis, I've been told that for people it typical lasts about a month from whatever triggers it. Maybe the bigger brain would mean it needs more time for the... psychosis(?)... to work through... whatever it's doing? Honestly, it's probably not whats happening with the elephants. They sounded superficially similar, so I made a glib comment about it.

[-] IDraw4u@sh.itjust.works 18 points 1 month ago

Well because of how "evolution" - it makes you produce more babies than the others that didn't fuck and kill. So... That.

[-] plyth@feddit.org 2 points 1 month ago

So... Why?

E.g. does it drive predators away and their offspring has a higher chance of survival?

[-] PapaStevesy@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

Animals that fuck more propagate their genes more. If they're also violent, they're probably taking out their competitors, and the non-violent ones are likely first to go.

also btw i read somewhere that Musth (the manic episode) can be shortened down to approximately 2 weeks when the elephants are restrained (with a metal chain) and practically starved a bit (given very little food) for a while. (they survive ofc)

the cycle between the day and the night represents the cycle of mania and peace

If we hadn't already nuked ourselves by slaughtering the bees, and the bees suddenly took 80 % of our living space from us to expand their own, we'd be nuking them.

The fascinating part is, why aren't the smart, massive matriarchs ordering all humans stomped on sight?

[-] Poojabber@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

One of us is drunk and not making sense... im not 100% sure, but im leaning toward you...
