This is actually an ongoing process starting with the Vietnam War and the war on terror.

I'm only barely old enough to remember how, in the 90's in Europe, everything that came from the US was cool and everything local was lame and embarassing. People older than me probably remember it being even more so before.

Nowadays that's only true for movies. I genuinely think that the US's imperialistic behavior has spoiled the goodwill earned from WWII, in combination with the internet shattering the monoculture that the US used to dominate.

40 odd years ago I wanted lots of stuff from the us. Too much to mention

30 years ago I wanted the cool tech, movies and TV shows etc, fast food etc. Video games and so on.

20 years ago all I wanted from the us was fast food and movies.

10 years ago all I wanted was one thing from the us. Movies. That's it, just one thing.

For the last 5 years it went up as I wanted two things. Movies and to hold the obese orange fuckbasket accountable for his many, many crimes.

Now today, though, I just want him to be accountable.
I don't give two shits about the shit food and the even more shitty movies or any of that useless crap, just do the fucking decent thing and make him feel the consequences of his actions. Just fucking once.

The decline of the us started decades ago. The collapse of the us started in 2016.

Fuck me, I've lived here all my life and don't want anything from here anymore. Only thing I care about here is my friends and family.

[-] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 week ago

This is pretty much exactly how I feel as well, although since I live here, there is also the realities of late stage capitalism (monopolies, value engineering, shrinkflation, enshitification) affecting my consumption and attempted lack thereof.

All I really want is justice. The red hats and their idol need lasting consequences. I just wish I could see how that may happen. Impeach, arrest and convict I guess. Rico, bribery, insurrection, and probably treason if they can prove it are all there for the picking. But I don’t see congress flipping enough to accomplish any of that, and they’d also have to to impeach half the Supreme Court to make any of it stick legally.

[-] raltoid@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Nowadays that's only true for movies.

Depending on where in the world it's still mostly true for shows and music as well. Although they've been losing their near-monopoly, just look at how popular Korean entertainment is now compared to even a decade ago.

Can't believe how much soft power the US is throwing away.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 37 points 1 week ago

Yeah but it's all worth it to not have to have access to abundant cheap labour, wait hang on.

[-] PresidentCamacho@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 week ago

Or a department of education... hold up.

[-] immutable@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 week ago

Soft power that has taken nearly a century to build up.

That’s the amazing thing about this moment in time. It is incalculable the amount of human effort that went into building this soft power reserve that is just being pissed away.

I can’t imagine what it would feel like to be someone that worked on serious trade deals or had some kind of diplomatic role. The number of Americans that volunteered in the peace corps to better the world and in doing so also buy goodwill with their time and work.

And for nothing. Literally nothing.

[-] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 45 points 1 week ago

their deal with america was the template for Ukraine's deal with russia. if i'm Japanese i ABSOLUTELY want to be rethinking my reliance on that deal for my safety and security as russia has blatantly violated their deal for 11 years now and america now moves to help them do it

[-] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 42 points 1 week ago

American citizen here. Please do.

You can't drag your nation down with our dumpster fire of a mess.

We're going through some shit right now...

[-] match@pawb.social 3 points 1 week ago

Ideally our government will weaken itself enough that we can just declare independence

[-] Jakeroxs@sh.itjust.works 30 points 1 week ago

As much as Trump talks about making America great, his actual policies are making other countries better, by proving we are an unreliable partner and destroying our global hegemony.

Probably not a bad thing for the world ultimately

[-] KingPorkChop@lemmy.ca 20 points 1 week ago

I hate Trump with every fibre of my being, but his hubris and bumbling has done amazing things for Canada and we're getting stronger every day.

When this is all over we should almost erect a monument for him as thanks. Maybe a gold coloured toilet in the middle of a field or something.

[-] k0e3@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

The one thing I'm worried about is the idiots who think Trump and his goons' policies are sound and they are succeeding. We have those in Japan and they seem to be getting louder every day.

[-] Subscript5676@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

I wonder how much of it is Shwitter (yeah, Shit Twitter) feeding them all sorts of blatantly biased and overtly rosy image of tRump. The Japanese is excessively hooked on Shwitter after all, and they don’t typically follow US news too closely.

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 27 points 1 week ago

its beyond time for japan and korea to find commanality and join with other asian nations to make an asian union like the EU.

[-] tiredofsametab@fedia.io 37 points 1 week ago

ts beyond time for japan and korea to find commanality and join

Good luck with that. Especially the older generations that still hate each other. Add to that whenever the japanese right or Korean left want to stir shit up with their nationalist bases, the opposite country is the go-to. Previous agreements etc. be damned.

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 24 points 1 week ago

I mean. italy, france, england, and germany. They were not always so chummy and now the uk is not even part of the biggest and earliest members.

[-] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

I mean.....England and France will always hate each other. It's just sometimes they're also allies. Allies who side eye each other.

[-] Ethalis@jlai.lu 9 points 1 week ago

We don't hate each other. I'd describe our relationship more like that of two rival siblings who bicker and argue and get weirdly competitive about just anything, but ultimately know they're family. As a frenchman I can recognize that we love you, you British pricks

[-] Prancingpotato@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Yeah ! But we definitely are the cooler sibling

[-] moopet@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago

England and France don't hate each other outside of seaside jokes.

[-] seejur@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

It took them back to back world wars and complete destruction to do that. I think on the other side of the pond they are still missing one or two before they realize that uniting is the correct way

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 5 points 1 week ago

to be fair the asian countries were invloved a bit in one of those wars.

[-] fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 week ago

The older generation will die out eventually. Japan can speed up the process by apologizing for everything already

[-] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 8 points 1 week ago

Yeah thats not gonna happen. Half the younger generation think the 90s happened because Korea and China stole all Japan's technology and/or the government spent too much and that Japan has always been a civilizing influence on east asia.

[-] WizardofFrobozz@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

You’re getting downvoted but you’re right. The biggest political movement among Japanese young people right now is fascist.

[-] Ava 7 points 1 week ago

It's not obvious to me that even if the two countries would be willing to do so that there would be enough strength to have any relevance related to China, so I'm not sure how viable it would be

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 5 points 1 week ago

The idea is japan, korea, taiwan, singapore, phillipinese, thailand, and maybe all the way down to australia is the eu and china is essentially their russia. It would have to be all democracies so likely not viet nam would have to massively change to be a part.

[-] gwilikers@lemmy.ml 14 points 1 week ago

What did the dumb cunt do this time?

[-] BeigeAgenda@lemmy.ca 21 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Send them a rude letter in a disrespectful manner that throws away all trade talks.

[-] rozodru@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

hah starting? newsflash America, we haven't been your biggest fan for quite a while.

[-] PresidentCamacho@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yeah but now DJT has given your governments the impetus to finally begin casting us aside, that's the difference...

And more power to them, I'm deeply ashamed by this nonsense. Granted I have seen the writing on the walls for at least the 20 years I've been voting age, and almost every single person Ive ever known has been saying "your just being alarmist, something something bootstraps" when I explain what I see. It is only shocking to see how much it has accelerated in such a short time window. Capitalism has gone from a predator praying on a healthy populous, do a carrion eater picking through our remains for the last loose change we have, and meanwhile there is a group of people that know our country has almost nothing left to steal trying to push towards authoritarianism since they know a collapse is immanent.

As long as we fuck over illegals though, that'll fix everything, don't mind the billionaires rifling through your pockets since the 60's.

I wish i could just live in blissful ignorance, totally happy about current events and not knowing i was helping to destroy my country. Lucky fucking idiots.

[-] ZDL@lazysoci.al 1 points 1 week ago

That is, indeed, the key difference.

The populace of most nations the world over has hated the USA and USAnals for decades now. (Hell, Germans hated the USA back in the '80s when I lived there!) But the governments of most nations were always eager to fellate whoever was in the White House for that entire time, with only rare exceptions here and there.

Now the governments are aligning with the views their people held for decades. That is a major change and will not go well for the USA.

[-] PresidentCamacho@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

That is a major change and will not go well for the USA.

Yeah, i wish i had citizenship anywhere else...

[-] HandsomePotatoe@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

Starting to? My brother/sister, they already are

[-] UncleGrandPa@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

As the actions of the US have become anttithetcal to the rest of the world

It should not surprise anyone

[-] someguy3@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago
[-] ZDL@lazysoci.al 2 points 1 week ago

Mr. USA disrespectful jackass.

[-] xiwi@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 week ago

Starting? Threntire world rightfully hates the usa.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPfeTBwrGAw

[-] thatradomguy@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Wow, never thought I'd see Japan say that about US. It's about damn time.

[-] Protoknuckles@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

I'm pretty sure that was Trumps plan from the beginning.

[-] TheOctonaut@mander.xyz 8 points 1 week ago

I mean it is, and explicitly so.

Hes burning bridges while doing so and it doesn't work the way he thinks it does or at least like he's selling it, as a balance sheet, but this is 100% what people were voting for, if they were aware or not.

[-] chug-capture-ahoy@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago

Starting…

[-] sommerset@thelemmy.club 2 points 1 week ago

I mean I think I agree that trade balance is a problem.

Americans have a moral obligation to resist Donald Trump and project 2025 at every turn.

America is a flawed democracy currently being ruled by oligarchs. Stop the backslide! Dont let America become the next Hungary.

America needs to challenge the court rulings of citizens united v. fec and shelby county v. holder, protect the media, implement independent district drawing, and the single transferable vote so they don't end up having people stay home in life-changing elections because they cannot vote for their favourite candidate.
