States worry that the imposition of Hindi, the main language of northern India, would wipe out their cultural heritage.

Late last month, the government of Maharashtra, a state in western India governed by Mr. Modi’s party, was forced to retract a policy requiring that Hindi be taught in elementary schools. Opposition politicians, residents and others had called the policy an affront to Marathi, the region’s native language.

In Tamil Nadu, a southern Indian state with a history of rioting over efforts to make Hindi mandatory, the chief minister has raged for months against an education policy pushed by the Modi government, claiming that it is trying to force students to learn the language. Tamil Nadu sued the central government in May after it said that it would withhold education funds until the state implemented the policy.

Are you sure they are shouting "No" and not "नहीं" ?

In all seriousness, would there be any reason that would make this news significant, aka newsworthy?

I am asking because without reading the article it seems like the only interested people would be Indians.

Am I wrong here?

I was under the impression that this community is for news from around the world, not news that the entire world is affected by.

Yes, you are wrong.

Source; I'm interested, not a citizen of India. Language and the role it plays in culture is just interesting to me.

You're coming to a community called "World News" and complaining about getting stories of * checks notes * World News?

What exactly do you think World News is? I come to World News to read stories just like this that are happening on the other side of the world from me.

India is the most populous country in the world. It, along with a handful of others will likely rise in dominance in the next 100 years if nothing else because their population isn't declining. Seeing this window on development in India is seeing a prequel to a future superpower. I find it fascinating to see how they choose to go about it.

Not wrong

Same kind of ridiculous nationalism and racism trump advocates for and tries to enforce through law. My dad, whose heritage hasnt lived in india in multiple generations, and has little connection to the religion or language, still supports that kind of bullshit and would rather people die so his religion and language come out on top. Like when india interferes with power and internet in Kashmir and hospitals are desperately trying to keep patients alive, that is a worthy sacrifice to him

It's not surprising that Modi is doing this in the same year that Trump issued an executive order making English the official language of America.

It's like they're competing for the Fascist of the Year award.

I hate it when Europeans bitch and moan about how much American news they get. I'd be a hypocrite to whine about the one piece of news I get from the most populous country in the world, which is actually kinda similar to something Trump would do.
