One person stopping a vehicle, the other judging the people in the vehicle like a disappointed parent.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 40 points 6 days ago

"Do your mothers know what you're doing?"

[-] dumbass@quokk.au 17 points 6 days ago

"Would your Grandmother be happy with you right now?"

[-] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 12 points 6 days ago

"You aren't being the neighbor that Fred Rogers knew you could be!"

I'm always amazed at how powerful that single sentence is to almost all Americans.

[-] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Unfortunately, many conservatives hated Mr. Rogers because he told children that they have intrinsic value as people.

[-] Zagorath@aussie.zone 77 points 6 days ago

Direct link to the actual toot source.

The second image is a bit on the nose IMO. The comparison was clear enough from the original. And yeah maybe some people need it pointed out to them, but I suspect those people are also the ones who will reject the idea regardless.

[-] Venus_Ziegenfalle@feddit.org 36 points 6 days ago

There are probably some out there, especially younger people or those who have only recently started educating themselves, who simply haven't seen the second image before.

[-] Zagorath@aussie.zone 22 points 6 days ago

Maybe, but I'd say if they don't know Tank Man, seeing it in this context without further explanation is still unhelpful. Because they're likely to think it's a photo taken in America today.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 10 points 6 days ago

I'm just thinking about the Venn diagram of people who know who George Takei is, are of the right kind of mind that they would actually see the link between the two images, but have not seen the second image.

[-] Venus_Ziegenfalle@feddit.org 4 points 6 days ago

Probably not a huge overlap but then again adding it for even just a few doesn't do any harm.

not to mention the amount of people who dont know its a still of a video with tiananmen square in the background.

[-] lime@feddit.nu 13 points 6 days ago

i didn't even see the guy in the first picture until i looked at the second and realized what i should be looking for

[-] Zagorath@aussie.zone 4 points 6 days ago

Huh, fair enough.

[-] lol_idk@lemmy.ml 43 points 6 days ago

Wait until the tankies come in here and tell you this guy was trying to stop them from leaving and asking them to go back and detain more immigrants while also claiming there were no immigrants there anyways

[-] mathemachristian 24 points 6 days ago

If you are talking about tank man i can just show you you can clearly see tiananmen square in the background and the direction the tanks are going and where the guy is pointing.

[-] noodlejetski@piefed.social 14 points 6 days ago

can't wait for that one guy from .ml to show up and argue that Tiananmen Square was a peaceful protest and post links claiming that there were no deaths recorded there.

[-] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 14 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

You dont need to make a strawman of what mls believe, you can just quote the wikipedia and ignore the claims by countries that have a reason to fabricate hostile evidence. If you want to go further, look at testimonies by witnesses that corroborate the side opposed to where they currently live.

Its also important to try to understand why the chinese feel the issue is contentious and the various perspectives, as opposed to letting the other side tell you how the chinese feel and why.

[-] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 7 points 5 days ago

There is no positive justification for tanks on a city street what the fuck are you even talking about.

[-] TheFrirish@jlai.lu 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

it's a new account of a known tankie. Just block and ignore

[-] mathemachristian 7 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

There were no deaths recorded there though. Here is what a reporter of the washington post who was in Beijing at the time says about that.

[-] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 6 points 5 days ago

IIRC, The chinese government say 200 something died, and presumably they have more information than a wapo reporter, since they can ask the hospitals and witnesses to verify the police and military reports.

[-] mathemachristian 2 points 1 day ago

I believe those were from the fighting happening elsewhere since there was an active rebellion going on with soldiers being lynched etc. What the wapo reporter is speaking against is this idea in the western mind of peaceful protesters on tiananmen square being mowed down by gunfire.

[-] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Ok yeah no nobody who has done as minimal investigation as "looking at the square in the background of the tankman video" and cares about the incident beyond its utility as hostile evidence believes that, I assumed we were talking about the entire incident.

[-] mathemachristian 2 points 9 hours ago

Thats precisely the distinction the wapo reporter makes

Some minister, 15 days after the events, according to a paywalled book in 1998, according to wikipedia.

The death toll was certainly greater than zero, theres pictures of dead soldiers and like 2 dozen protestors in the streets surrounding the square.

In the U.S, our tanks would run them over

[-] TimewornTraveler@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 6 days ago
[-] Benedict_Espinosa@europe.pub 10 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

It indeed is in the US, and the Hummer kept moving and would have run the guy over, if he had not stepped aside.

[-] pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Yes, I was making the comparison to that one event in China to this event (in the u.s) saying that our tanks (literal or metaphorical for a member of a military convoy) would run over our protestors instead of stopping.

[-] jaybone@lemmy.zip 10 points 6 days ago

I want to see the US soldier who swore to uphold the US Constitution operating a tank run down US citizens on US soil. Then we will know for sure China has won.

[-] zeca@lemmy.eco.br 3 points 5 days ago

What do you mean? Is it china that has forced the usa to be violent to its own citizens?
