send and receive mobile alerts via text message

I hope this database of phone numbers, and all programs that connect to it, are secure.

(Not that text messages are even secure, but a database is much easier to extract a complete list from.)

Are there any legal risks for signing up to this?

[-] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 49 points 2 days ago

Not really, at least as long as the constitution is worth the paper it's written on. But uh considering recent rulings, need to evaluate your own risk tolerance because who knows in future.

[-] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 16 points 2 days ago

Yeah that’s about what I was thinking, thanks. I’m going to ponder it but as I’m relatively privileged it might be worth the risk for me to help my community.

[-] jaybone@lemmy.zip 8 points 2 days ago

Is it hosted outside of the US, in a jurisdiction which won’t honor a warrant to search servers?

[-] GeraldOfHillwood@lemmy.world 25 points 2 days ago

From their site:

Is this service illegal?

No. Reporting, documenting, photographing, videotaping any law enforcement officer or law enforcement activity in plainly visible public spaces is protected under the First Amendment of the US Constitution. StopICE exists in the interest of free speech, transparency and public reporting. ACLU: You Have The Right to Record Law Enforcement Officers.

[-] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 8 points 2 days ago

I saw that but I’m just curious to hear other thoughts if there are any.

[-] GeraldOfHillwood@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago

It's not illegal, so I think ICE terrorists are getting what they want if people are afraid to exercise their constitutional rights.

[-] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 8 points 2 days ago

Yeah I think you are right about that.

[-] rumimevlevi@lemmings.world 5 points 2 days ago

Woulfn' they be able to arrest people using it under the pretext of law inforcement obstruction?

[-] Stillwater@sh.itjust.works 20 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The whole reason for this app is that the administration is not abiding the law. So don't rest your hopes on what is legal.

[-] JandroDelSol@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

it's not illegal, but at this rate the laws don't matter. this is almost definitely a honeypot to track their opposition

[-] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

From courts legitimately interpreting the law? Not at all.

But that's not a guarantee anymore, and the administration also doesn't care what the courts say. He also just got gigafunding for his Gestapo.

[-] Dogyote@slrpnk.net 11 points 2 days ago

Why aren't any raids being reported in Texas?

[-] Resonosity@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 2 days ago

Because Texas is firmly R. Trump has been deploying ICE in D states as a victory for his base. If Trump deployed ICE in rural R places, then his base would start to feel the effects of what no immigrant workforce looks like. And they'll get rightfully pissed (more than they already are).

First they came for the blue state immigrants...

[-] AntiBullyRanger@ani.social 9 points 2 days ago

Yeah, PSTN is wiretapped. Don't use this.

Also do grassroots notification with locals. Not everyone has a phone, or a cellphone carrier.

[-] hedgehog@ttrpg.network 3 points 1 day ago

PSTN is wiretapped.

It’s a good thing that the website itself supports sending and receiving alerts, then.

[-] chicken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 2 days ago

Does this website have an onion mirror?

[-] AlecSadler 9 points 2 days ago

I'm not white and live in a red area, would love to sign up but also concerned it puts me on a list.

[-] Damaskox@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

A dumb question.

What is ICE?

[-] GeraldOfHillwood@lemmy.world 26 points 2 days ago

It's not a dumb question. Asking questions to gain knowledge is a good thing. Here you go.

[-] not_that_guy05@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

I've been wanting to sign up just in case there are some around me that need assistance with people blocking ice, but I don't want to give my number and have been thinking of getting a burner.

[-] match@pawb.social 6 points 2 days ago

thank fuck, i did need to know this, thanks

[-] ravenaspiring@sh.itjust.works 13 points 2 days ago

For those on iPhone and at any risk, ICEBlock app is potentially better, as it maintains more privacy.

The reason they don't do android:

At ICEBlock, user privacy and security are paramount. Our application is designed to provide as much anonymity as possible without storing any user data or creating accounts. While we understand the desire for an Android version of ICEBlock, achieving this level of anonymity on Android is not feasible due to the inherent requirements of push notification services.

[-] Zikeji@programming.dev 54 points 2 days ago

Keep in mind their claims about Android have been clearly refuted and their claims in general are dubious.

https://grapheneos.social/@GrapheneOS/114789276549546469

Given this, they're either dangerously ignorant or intentionally malicious.

[-] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 31 points 2 days ago

ICEBlock is very suspicious, no claims they make about privacy can be verified and Apple has access to all the userdata. As it is centrally run, there is also a good chance of the dev being threatened into handing over data to the feds.

[-] LodeMike@lemmy.today 25 points 2 days ago

Apple stores those unique IDs and absolutely will send them upon a legal warrant.

You can use https://fiftyfiftyonearizona.org/reports/ to receive StopICE alerts via NTFY.

[-] themachine@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Was just wondering how I could get the OP link into ntfy somehow. Glad I read the comments. Thanks for the link.

[-] LodeMike@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago

This isn't run by the same entity. Its someone else. Don't know how they get the data but there's a link to source code.

[-] themachine@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

It's sourced primarily from the stopice.net site so the alerts should be the same.

[-] queueBenSis@sh.itjust.works 16 points 2 days ago

i don’t trust IceBlock. they don’t allow you to use the app at all without sharing your live location. it’s true iOS has better security and privacy, but whatever information any app collects from its users (like location data) will be sent to their own servers and cannot be confirmed by apple what they do with that data you willfully provided them

[-] g8phcon2@k.fe.derate.me 3 points 2 days ago

@ravenaspiring@sh.itjust.works or in other words we only want to help rich immigrants

@GeraldOfHillwood@lemmy.world

[-] hopesdead@startrek.website 4 points 1 day ago

My experience, I have never received a single alert send to me. Seems broke. On my end. Always have to look at the website.
