The same second? I agree. But even two seconds should be plenty to notice the light is green and begin accelerating. By second four, I'm giving you a gentle honk because I suspect you are either on your phone, or zoned out.

[-] Bosht@lemmy.world 31 points 1 month ago

Every time I see one of these memes posted, I automatically assume it was some dill hole on his/her phone not paying attention and posts this to try to justify or feel better. I've never run into anyone that is that impatient at a light. People honk because you're not paying attention, and in this day and age it's usually peeps on their phone.

[-] grueling_spool@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 month ago

I would also assume this, if I hadn't also repeatedly witnessed the exact behaviour the OP describes. The "instant honk on green" drivers also tend to follow up with whatever reckless maneuver allows them to beat you to the next red light by 1.5 seconds. Inattentiveness and impatience are both dangerous on the road.

[-] IttihadChe@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 month ago

I've seen people like that super often, I've never measured but I've probably seen impatient honkers more than I've seen actual distracted people at a light. Your experience is not global.

[-] vinceman 4 points 1 month ago

I honestly cannot believe you, simply due to the relevance world wide of those dash cell mounts.

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

You must live in Boston.

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 47 points 1 month ago

How about you get off your damn phone and pay attention? It's actually been green for five whole seconds.

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 34 points 1 month ago

The person at the front of the queue at a light has a solemn duty to pay attention and move as soon as possible .

I take this very seriously, but as with everything humans let me down constantly.

[-] FinalRemix@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

I've seen way too many idiots ignore red lights since COVID to "move as soon as possible" anymore. I'm not risking getting Tboned to appease some impatient twat behind me.

[-] SuperSaiyanSwag@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 month ago

Yep, saw a car get t-boned 2 years ago. I take a second to make sure that no car is trying to beat the red light before I move.

[-] gizmonicus@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago

Always look both ways, no matter how long the light has been green. I need to see you're paying attention though, that's the thing. So many people in the front of the line are sitting on their phone so sleeping or whatever the fuck. It's pretty obvious when someone is just checking the intersection before moving vs. not even looking at the damn road.

This goes for more than just driving too. If you're next in line at the café and you can't be fucked to think about anyone behind you while you finish sending a text or whatever while the server is waiting to take your order, you're an asshole. Make your order, pay, then do what you want to do.

[-] rivvvver@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 month ago

this is very much true, but it is still ur choice whether u honk at them. u will find that many times people will notice 2 seconds later and give a lil thank/apology wave ur way.

i think the best way of handling it if ur in a hurry is a super short honk, just enough to wake them up without making them feel attacked.

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

Of course, a nice short toot just to get their attention.

Because unlike literally everyone I encounter outside my home, I am aware that other people exist.

[-] How_do_I_computah@lemmy.world 22 points 1 month ago

We don't know if you're high, sleeping, on your phone, or just watching SpongeBob on your infotainment panel. All we know is that you're failing of the one expectation of you.
Honking at you gets your attention back where it needs to be. Don't take it personal. People have places to be.

[-] IttihadChe@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Theoretically, if they just have a slower reaction time than you, you are actually slowing them down as they now have to look around to make sure you aren't honking because of potential danger, which is the actual usage purpose of a car horn.

Edit: Additionally, this creates a broader societal danger as the "go when honked at!" mentality is entirely opposite of the true purpose of a horn.

Example: Person in front is about to go, you notice that someone is running the red light perpendicular, you honk to signal the danger, now instead of recognizing the danger, they go anyway, thinking you were impatiently honking, leading directly to an accident.

[-] CileTheSane@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 month ago

Honk means "pay attention". If the light has been green long enough for me to honk at you you're not paying attention to anything on the road, danger or otherwise.

[-] IttihadChe@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 month ago

For you specifically, maybe. Your experience is not universal and the original discussion was about people who honk instantly.

[-] BlackVenom@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

You're silly and dense.

[-] CileTheSane@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago

the original discussion was about people who honk instantly.

The top of this thread is someone saying they don't know if you're paying attention. I was replying to your comment about "honking meaning move immediately."

Conversations shift as people say things. If I wanted to comment on the original discussion I would have started a new thread relplying to the original discussion. I was replying to you about the thing you said.

[-] IttihadChe@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I took it as: The OP is about honking instantly.

The top of the thread is trying to justify impatiently honking immediately. "I'm impatient and idk why you aren't moving immediately!"

Hence my response that they could just have a slower reaction time to the light turning.

So when you say "if the lights been green long enough"

I reply about how "green long enough" is subjective and the thread is biased towards the an Immediate honk.

If your reaction time is worse than 2 seconds I question if you should be driving. Driving is not a responsibility you should take lightly.

Honk doesn’t mean go, honk means pay attention.

[-] Devadander@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Ffs just drive when the light turns green. Stop trying to find every little fucking loophole

[-] punk_princess 4 points 1 month ago

y'all are using your phones and drug paraphernalia way too fucking often. it's infuriating how little you cagers don't pay attention meanwhile you're surrounded by computer controlled explosives and hundreds of pounds of glass.

I fucking hate you all. oblivious murderers.

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

I'm gonna need you to take about 20% off the top there buddy

[-] sgibson5150@slrpnk.net 15 points 1 month ago

There were always three topics that would start a fight on Reddit:

  1. Nuclear power
  2. The care and feeding of a cat
  3. Any mention of driving less than 500 mph in the fast lane

I feel like this one goes in the third bucket. Be better than Reddit, Lemmy.

[-] GrumpyDuckling@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 month ago

I do this to people who are weaving around traffic and cut me off and we're both at the same light anyway. so I honk the moment the light turns green just to be a dick.

[-] HiddenLayer555@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 month ago

They're just yelling for joy at the light turning green

[-] Zerush@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 month ago

Some years ago, while still usihg a car, honking behind me on green light, automaticly caused to relay my start until the lights turned yellow again 🖕

[-] IttihadChe@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 month ago

This is not suggested as 1) honkers are usually already impatient and on edge 2) Road rage is real and very dangerous.

[-] Zerush@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 month ago

Road rage isn't so real in the EU, I never had problems with it. Apart, what will he do, if I left him behind again with the red light?

[-] washbasin@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

The moment the light turns green is the moment I take my foot off the brake. I move very slowly forward while checking the cross streets (way too many people running red lights, it's absurd). Taking your foot off the brake lets the cars behind you know you're paying attention.
